"And do you know anything about a mechanical bird?" She nods to whomever picked it up. "It attacked us outside of this very temple, and we would like to know if that is how all visitors are greeted."
Veletta sighs as you tell her that and says "That would be Nim. It was gifted to us by a Lantanese wizard some time ago. Come with me," she says as she leads you up a spiral staircase to an attic. She attempts to open the door to find it locked. "That's strange, there shouldn't be a lock on this door. Looks like you'll have to talk to him through the door, unless one of you can pick locks. The door must not be broken, though - it was crafted 1000 years ago and is an important artifact," she tells you.
Mairi started to visibly sweat. "Uhhh... well, I used to be a bit of locksmith, in my younger days. Ehh, well, Pop's anyways. Used to watch him. Even gave me own set to practice with -- Uhh.... One sec."The Sun Half-Elf fishes around in her pack for a few moments, eventually fishing out a set of picks. But rather than immediately set to work, she places them to her forehead and says... something in a tongue both alien and musical.
But after which she sets to work with the confidence of someone guided by a greater force.
Following the others up to the door, Saralyssa raises her eyebrow at the sight of the lockpicks. "Hidden depths there..." She comments in a soft mutter. She stands back and to one side as the sun elf starts working on the door though, not entirely certain she wants to be directly in the path of that door when it does open. Who knows what else could have been done to it if the lock was new. She reaches back and tugs on the red braid of her hair, a nervous habit of hers.
[OOC: DM, Assuming Tyrus is actually with the party and not still downstairs checking out the exhibits, is it possible for him to Help Mairi with his knowledge as an actual guild locksmith and thereby give her Advantage on her roll.]

Briga, also proficient in Thieves Tools, just whistles admiringly. “Nice technique. How many pins is this lock?” She will either try or offer a help action to the next person to make the attempt, if needed.
"Bad luck there, lassie," says Tyrus, looking closely at the tools she was using.
"Did you be saying your Pops was the locksmith..." Then he scowls and says, "I wouldn't be letting the guard be seeing that set of tools. They be not for fixing locks."
He then turns to door and examines it more broadly.
"Be there any other way in?" he asks the attendant.
[OOC: Probably a silly question, but I assume the hinges for this door are on the other side so we can't just take the hinges off the door and open it that way... Just checking. It is normally dependent on which side of the door needs to be secured and what is in the path of the door when it opens.]

"Wh-wha? Well... I mean, they might look at anyone funny if they carry around picks. But, it's not as if I have them on display all the time." Mairi replied with a faint smirk. "I only do because I'm rather attached to them.... Well, that, and it sometimes convenient for those neighbors that lock themselves outta their own home, and need some help."She adds, straightening out and turning to the others bright smile for a moment, and then warily squints at Tyrus.
"Wait... Are you.... I mean, I know the media hasn't probably been kind to you perhaps, but it's not like I moonlight as a thief or something, if that's what -that- comment was about. Even I have my standards." She says, a hand at her chest and looking genuinely hurt for a moment.

Distracted thanks to Tyrus, Mairi jumped at Saralyssa's call out for a moment or two, and finally took note Griff again. "Y-yea, let's not do that."She quickly says to Griff, motioning with her eyes to the very still present Dragonborn Gondite with them. Then turning to Tyrus frowning, "And no, he wasn't a thief. Unless you count some of 'women's hearts he's stolen over the years'." She states, rolling her eyes at the end. "Anyhow-..." She pauses, looks back to the door, then steps a fair ways a way. Far enough that at whisper to the group she can speak without any prying ears past the door.
"My father's gifted tools aside--"She adjust her glasses and sort of leers at Tyrus a moment, before letting her gaze soften. "I think I got one trick in mind. Just be ready to back it, and... hoi boy... Lord oghma. Pleaseforgivemebutletthiswork!"Without really waiting for answer, she hops on over, assuming no others hadn't stayed and gotten the door open, and raps her knuckles on the door urgently. "Nim! Nim, Open Up! The temple is gonna explode in the next few moments! Someobody mixed the wrong compounds -- we gotta go! Please Nim! Hurry! You gotta get out there!"She called out desperately more than close enough to the door to be heard, or so she figured.
“I totally have lock picks. Guy who sold them to me called em thieves tools. Handy if you’re gonna sneak up on a bounty,” Briga says casually. “I’m not half bad at sneaking, either. Guess that could make me halfway to being a decent thief. A skill set is never a bad thing. It doesn’t matter where it came from, it’s about the good we can do here and now. Isn’t that right, Tyrus?”
OOC: This was meant to be an interjection during the earlier tense moment to try to calm everyone down, prior to the ruse to lure out Nim.

[@Orileo: Tyrus's background is that he is an artisan guild locksmith (partly the reason he doesn't like thieves) with proficiency in tinker's tools. Because we didn't have a rogue, and Bards have Jack of All Trades, the ref has allowed Tyrus to make a fool of himself ;-) in the past with some of his tinkering tools... The fact that Briga apparently has proficiency in Thieves Tools and actually has a set is news to me!!!]
Intrigued by Mairi's sudden action, Tyrus waits anxiously to see what happens.
If nothing does, he is going to have strong words with this here stubborn lock (i.e., he will cast the Knock spell, despite the large amount of noise it makes).
[@Orileo: Tyrus took Knock recently when we went to 3rd level because of past problems with locks and his lack of tools and proficiency. It gets the job done, but it isn't subtle. Hopefully your deception works, and if it doesn't then the sound won't matter much now anyway.]
Saralyssa continues hanging back. Unless something needs blasting she considers the rest of the group probably better choices for interacting than she would be. Plus there is probably only so much room near the door anyway.
"Well, that was... interesting," the priest says when you wait for a moment to see if Nim responds. "Nim, it's OK, we are not going to hurt you," she says calmly. A few moments later, there is a click as the door creaks open. Inside the attic is a cluttered room with half-finished inventions. Standing nervously in the room is a humanoid sized construct. It waves to Valetta as it sees her. "Is it OK for us to come in?" she asks. The construct waves his hand to gesture you all in.
"He doesn't speak, but can understand. He knows a simple sign language that we here have taught him to communicate," Valetta tells you.
