Alton steps into the room and his jaw opens briefly in surprise. His mind working quickly, he calls out bardic inspiration to one of his new fighter friends facing down the enraged Orc. “Stand steady and bravely adventurer!”
The halfling then bravely casts an incantation, summoning an illusory crate to hide behind! “I have heard of these things. I think it may be an elder brain from deep within the underdark.” He grips his instrument and peers through the crate. Somehow it is translucent for him, knowing it is an illusion.
Bonus action: Bardic inspiration on either Dwaye or Soar (hard to visualize the room, so pick someone that is in the action)
Action: Cast minor illusion in front of me just inside the door, creating total cover
I hope the inspiration will protect against any spell to resist its’ magic easier. Thank Mystra we have so many warriors! Her magic will keep them safe as we rescue the noble.
(OOC: I'm in the UK and often find loads has happened when I've been asleep. Lucky for me I can access for forums at work - like now - so posting during the UK day time is fine for me, but I often find I'm way behind or have missed lots. Part of PbP I'm sure [this is my first game so it's all new to me!]. Happy to continue at this pace and I'll just accept that Reynard sometimes has to fast forward to catch up and sometimes [often perhaps] will miss out on the fun. No worries. Meanwhile I'm waiting to see what the wizard and mind flayer get up to!)
Soar hears the voice in her head, and, still spooked from the gazer's fear ray, withdraws from trying to threaten the mind flayer, saying again, "we're here for the person you kidnapped, that's all." If the mind flayer is on its way out, then she's happy to let it go. She turns her attention to the half-orc wizard torturing who she assumes is Floon. Let me know when it's the next turn!
[OOC: I'm still on board, but I agree it's increasingly hard to keep track of things. I do really like the campaign, your DM style, how engaged lots of folks are, and especially that things are fast-paced. But the wide-open nature of things, people coming and going, combined with the pace mean that people get left behind and things can get out of hand. It makes it harder when a player decides to make big decisions for the party (even if they are just playing an impulsive character and that's what the character would do -- we don't know each other at all in game so everything's a surprise) and then everyone's left scrambling. Big example is busting down the double doors, but I am 100% certain I'm guilty of what I'm describing too! We may just have to decide as a group to acknowledge that it's good practice to give others a chance to catch up and contribute before making irreversible moves. Or keep the gates wide open nature of the campaign, but do some things to let folks digest things? Perhaps start a PM thread where we can talk out of character and introduce each other. And start a campaign where we can see the sheets of who's in and out easily. Or perhaps allow new entries on a rolling basis but only at certain checkpoints in the story (maybe this is already happening and I'm behind!). Just some thoughts!]
Happy for fast and loose; happy to slow down. I do feel it will be a shame if we lose Kruk when he is one of the main characters so far. I'm happy to slow down to facilitate that. It might also help me with my timezone situation if we slow down a bit.
I'm also happy if you want to stop randoms dropping in - though I quite like the chaotic nature of that - but perhaps asking them to wait until certain milestones before you let them join.
All in all, really enjoying the fast and loose game and really enjoying the style of DMing - I'm loving that the default answer from the DM is "yes" - always a great sign!))
Grum'shar the half-orc wizard is very upset with Dwaye, who just smashed his hammer into him unceremoniously as he was busy interrogating Floon; he doesn't dare cast burning hands for fear he may hit and invoke the wrath of the mind flayer, so he instead attempts a fire bolt cantrip. (Attack: 19 Damage: 3)
Whether or not the spell hits Dwaye, it is now Deryus's turn.
(Yeah sorry but Kruk is gone. It is a pet peeve of mine to be left stumbling in the dark and that had kind of happened more then once. In the last two combats things were done before I could get back on. That and as many others have said it is hard to keep track with the constant coming and going of characters. As soon as I learned the name of the party they all changed. In fact I think Kruk was the last of the original line up. Once again I hope you all have fun and find a way to make things work. I wish I could have stayed but it sadly isn't possible for me to keep up.)
[Okay, sad to see you go... I wouldn't be against slowing down the pace, but at the same time, I kind of like the fast-paced nature of this, but since people are really getting left behind, I think we should probably slow it down a bit. I agree that stopping random drop-ins is a good idea, it makes it very confusing to keep track of who’s in the party]
Dwaye sees the fire bolt flying towards him and tries to raise his shield, but he’s just a bit too late and it hits his forehead, which Dwaye quickly pats down.

A spellcaster! Alton waits behind the crate, still fully invisible to the rest of the room. He watches the orc, a plan forming even as he sees the mind flayer glide. Dangerous!
Deryus misses Grum'shar half-orc with his sword, but follows up with a hard punch to the face that knocks the wizard out cold.
Nihiloor the mind flayer speaks, telepathically, to the party: "Well done, interlopers." He claps his clawed hands together twice, silently. "Your friend's torture has revealed no secrets beyond petty blackmail; as enjoyable as it was to watch, there is no sense in keeping him any longer. He has served his purpose; the young Neverember has come to me, I have probed his mind, and it seems he knows nothing of stone we seek. Unfortunate. We are done here." He picks up his intellect devourer pet. "If you would, please be so kind as to allow me to pass unperturbed to the stone pillar in the room you just unceremoniously burst in from, and we will be on our way."
(Assuming nobody wants to pick a fight with the mind flayer as he passes...) Nihiloor places a stone eye into the circular indentation on the pillar; as he does so, an opaque black doorway magically opens in the south wall of the pillar room. As he steps into the portal, he adds "Do what you will with Grum'shar; I'm not feeling hungry." And with that, he is vanished.

Renaer, meanwhile, has rushed to Floon's side. Floon has gone unconscious from the trauma, it would seem. "Come on Floon, don't you die on me!" He looks to the party: "Do any of you have the means and knowledge to heal burns? Floon's in a bad condition."

Erik breaths a bit easier once the two dangerous creatures vanish.
"Perhaps it's time to search for some treasure." he walks back to the room with two doors and open these doors if they are unlocked.
Searching for valuables; (ooc when passive perception is 9 does that mean it's a 1d20 +9 roll?) search the room behind the bottom door; 25 Search the room behind the top door; 13 assuming the doors are unlocked.

((I am just happy to play my character, and hopefully not cause stress to the other players and DM.
I tend to like the rule of two for players to signal what they are going to do and make sure at least another character will second the action.
I tend to play carefully, as if I rush ahead of the party there is a chance I fear I will be killed spectacularly!
I like the idea above of PMing each other to discuss things. My inbox is always open.
Thanks again for inviting me to your game!))
Glad to hear Soar parley! Maybe we can talk our way out of this conflict after all, he thinks to himself.
Alton remains hidden and steels himself for whatever may happen next.
