Although he can no longer see the final creature, Abner continues to run through the woods in the direction the creatures were fleeing (or was it in the same direction?)
If he manages to spot the surviving monster, he'll cast his cantrip again:
[OoC]: The last enemy is completely hidden from you, you'd be firing into a random direction and hoping for the best unless you made a successful perception check to spot it as an action. I'll let you change your action in case you didn't realise - but if you're keeping your attack you'll need to roll another d20 as you'll have disadvantage to hit. As well as disadvantage, you need to guess which space the creature is in. Since we're not strictly using a grid, I'll say that you have a 20% chance of hitting it.
tl;dr if you want to continue trying to hit the enemy whose location you don't know, roll another d20 and a d100 (aiming for < 20) - otherwise you can edit your action.

OOC: I don't mean for him to shoot blind. I imagined Abner using his movement to continue running in the direction he last saw the two fleeing goons. If he manages to stumble across one, he'd attack. If not, he'd stop. (He's starting to get worried about losing the path and the group, or running into some new danger.) Does that make sense (or fit into the rules)?
Abner sprints off through the trees to follow the final fleeing creature. Without finding anything, he soon comes to a stop amidst the dense underbrush.
It would appear that the danger is over, for now.
[OoC]: You can all act outside of initiative order now.

”Not cockatrices, I know that much,” Therne says, getting to her feet. “The last one went off that way.” She points. “But we have at least one we should probably question and take back to town, if they’re attacking people on the road.”

Abner and Red:
You guys know that you were attacked by a race of crow-like beings known as Kenku. They are flightless creatures of cunning and spite who often integrate themselves into the criminal underworld of major cities - where they thrive.
Red:
Additionally, you know that Kenku once could fly. After some slight to an old god, they had their rings ripped from their bodies and their voices stolen. They have adapted well to the latter, having developed the ability to perfectly mimic any sound that they hear - including voices.
[OoC]: This is my last post for today. I'm up early tomorrow and have a course all day, so won't be able to post until Tuesday morning. Make sure you all have a clear direction before then. Goodnight :)

Red will move towards the one remaining, that he can see. If he can close within 60 feet he'll cast Vicious Mockery again: Wisdom save or 2 psych damage May your beak rot off!
Then he'll break off the chase

"My mother used to tell me about crow-like beings known as 'Kenku'. They are supposed to be flightless, but smart, nasty, and criminal. But I always associated them with stories of the city, not the wilderness."
"We killed two? Or, Therne, did you suggest one was still alive? Did anyone search them?"
"It's starting to get late, and I wonder if some of you might need a rest. So we may have to wait until morning to explore the ruins. What do you think? Do we dare camp? Would we be safer in the woods or in the clearing or in the ruins? I don't want those crow things sneaking up on us in the night!"
"Phew!" he exclaims, after a pause. Clearly his adrenaline isn't quite depleted. Shifting his weight from foot to foot, Abner is still pretty worked up.
To Adri I am sorry, that last one was too far ahead. I hate the thought that it will warn its fellows, but we'll never catch it, and we risk another ambush even trying.
To Therne I am sorry, you were right and I was foolish. They didn't put extra brains in these things pointing to horns
I think we should stop for the night soon. I am out of spells, still hurting some, and it is late. Perhaps moving on from right here, but not too far.
The lore says that Kenku could once talk, and fly, but some magic ripped away voice and wings. In place of voices they are mimics, almost envied by some Bards. Like Msr Abner, I thought of them as city beggars. But I guess dangerous in the woods. We should be watchful.

“Oh, if you checked and they were both dead, then never mind,” Therne says. “I thought perhaps at least one was just unconscious. They hid before, they could be playing dead now.” Looking down the path towards their destination, she says “We should at least go ahead into the clearing, I don’t want to set up camp off the road here after all that, and I agree that being rested before we explore the house sounds best, but we should be able to determine if the blade itself is safe. I have a little magic left in me, if need be, to scout for magic or talk to any animals nearby.”
To Red, she says “Don’t apologize for things beyond your control. You back down too quickly sometimes.”
“I agree we should look about for dangers before bedding down for the night. Please allow me to go first. We should set a watch for the night. I don’t mind taking the first watch as well.”

Red bows and smiles to Therne, a bit embarrassed but feels better.
I don't think we did search or check on our late friends, perhaps we ought to. Among the suggestions so far, I think camping in the clearing sounds good. Probably a bit of open sight line to watch for anything approaching? And if Lady Wildcloak could find a critter to ask we could get some forewarning. I have two uses of inspiration left I could grant to the first watch and whoever comes after me if it helps with the watching.
[ooc if no objection, how about Red Therne and Abner (the quietest) check the further kenku, while Brozak and Adri get the nearer? stories round the campfire? set a watch order then marshmallows?]
