"Now seems as good a time as any. The longer we wait, the more chance there is that the next victim is a person." Hef shoulders his glaive and looks to the rest of the group, waiting 'til everyone signals they are ready.
(when you say more than one trail, is it more than one trail to follow, or multiple things creating the one trail?)
Multiple tracks going the same way.
The party starts following the tracks down into the woodlands, while staying close to the Old Road. After about one hour, you notice the tracks suddenly stop near a few shrubs and trees. It's not a very dense forest, so trees are quite spaced out. The sun is now on the horizon as dawn is turning into day. As you approach the shrubs, you see them move, at first you think it could be the wind, but before long you realize something else is happening. The branches twist together to form a humanoid-looking body, and the plant-creatures pull their roots free from the earth, one of the creatures has conifer-like needles growing all over its body in quivering clumps. The plants slowly start coming towards you...
Your party is facing 3 twig blights (right blight on image) and 1 needle blight (middle blight on image) :
Blights' Initiative: 4
ROLL FOR INITIATIVE ! (Anybody with an initiative equal or higher than the blights can take their first turn already)
Hef spots the creatures before they close with any of his companions. "Lookout! It's... Uh... " He lunges forward, slicing at one of the smaller things and retreats to guard everyone from their approach.
Move: walk to G8 Action: Attack I7 Bonus: Attack I7 Then, retreat to F9 with remaining movement
Editing: I'm adding my actions. I don't know if this will trigger the "Adjusted rolls" alert. If it does, I can remove those things and wait to post. Init rolled was a 5.
Renny blinks, taking a step back and then points, "Holy shit, I was right!" she's way too happy about this.. until the fact that a fight is about to happen dawns on her.
Initiative: 19
Renny quickly pulls a crystal out from under her shirt that's on a metal chain and casts fire bolt at the one already hit once (I7 I believe). Hit or miss she backs up further down the road to get distance (15 feet to F14).
Attack: 8Fire Damage:9
(If she misses, is there a chance that hits the bush and lights a fire? :D )
Editing: I'm adding my actions. I don't know if this will trigger the "Adjusted rolls" alert. If it does, I can remove those things and wait to post. Init rolled was a 5.
(Looks like you used d8 instead of d10 for the first damage, but doesn't matter, you destroy it anyways. Also a good note when it comes to editing: – you can edit the post's text before and after the roll without problem – you can add new rolls to the post after any previous ones – you can't edit an existing roll, nor add a roll before another existing one)
Hef: You lunge forward onto the closest Blight, and your Glaive just explodes it into a pile of branches and twigs.
Renny: You shoot a fire bolt towards the closest Blight, but at the same moment you see Hef jump forward and destroy it with his Glaive. The branches and twigs start burning, but you can see the fire is slowly choking out after a few seconds, everything is slightly humid, most likely because of morning dew.
(If the attack was a hit, I would have assumed you targeted another enemy, so since it was a miss, I thought I'd make it a double-kill in a sense.)
(PS: I usually roll creature hit points, so if ones dies to a certain amount of damage, doesn't necessarily mean they all will)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Zak can't believe his eyes - Renny WAS right. So there HAS to be dragons then too!
Initiative: 20
Zak will show a different side of himself during combat. You notice him start to shake a little bit and just tense and flex up a bit, takes a quick look around into all of his comrades eyes with a fiery glare and yells a deep war-ish yell as he moves ahead and takes a huge swing at the biggest looking wood freak (Needle blight). He's not in full rage mode (I mean how strong can twig men be he thinks), but he feels a genuine anger for these creatures that seem to want to hurt these new friends he's made. His only friends.
Zak will go to F4 and Attack needle blight with Greatsword: 6 Damage if needed: 10
Will remain in front of the Needle blight after he swings his sword.
Zak lunges onto the spiky plant creature and swings his Greatsword. The creature shields itself with what seems to be an arm, but to no avail, the arm is broken straight off with the sound of breaking wood. It still stands, with one arm shattered, but twigs already seeming to start shifting in its body to rebuild the missing limb..
Gwenant (waiting for initiative) and Spotty are up. Then the Blights, then Martin (too early in the morning for a Dwarf).
Spotty: You line a shot with your short-bow, but at the last second, a ray of sun glares off Zak's Greatsword, and you shoot right into a nearby tree (a normal tree).
Gwenant is a little caught off guard by the shout of alarm, but quickly brings her weapons to bear.
Initiative: 10
She runs to the side of the more thorny plant creature, planning to flank it with Zak's help if it lives much longer. While running, she throws a javelin at the needle-y creature.
Gwenant moves to B6 and throws a javelin at the needle blight. Attack: 10 Damage (if hit): 6
Gwenant: You reach Zak's side, and together you are facing the Needle Blight. Your javelin passed a little too high and didn't hit the target.
The Needle Blight will claw back at Zak: Attack: 8 Damage (piercing): 4
The Twig Blight from I5 moves up to G5 and attempts to scratch Gwenant in the back: Attack: 18 Damage (piercing): 3
The last Blight, from D6 moves up to F8 going after Hef. This causes an Attack of Opportunity for Hef thanks to his Polearm Master feat (if he wishes to use his reaction). If Hef succeeds: The Blight stays stuck in F7. If not, the Blight will attack Hef from F8: Attack: 8 Damage (piercing): 5
This leaves Martin for Round 1. Then the others can make their Round 2 actions.
Tracking Zak is in melee with the Needle Blight, Gwenant is beside him and has been back-stabbed by a Twig Blight. Hef is in melee with a Twig Blight that is either 5 or 10 ft away depending on his reaction/opportunity attack.
Zak is able to parry the Needle Blight's claws with his Greatsword, and immediately swings back at the creature in an attempt to cut its head clean off.
Attack of opportunity from Hef: Attack: 21 Damage: 9
((He doesn't have Sentinel, so he doesn't stop movement yet.))
Quick as a viper, Hef lashes out at the approaching twig blight. He drives the blade of his glaive into it's chest, pausing just a moment to see if it phases the creature. "Anyone... uh... Anyone have any idea what in the seven Hells we're fighting?"
"Now seems as good a time as any. The longer we wait, the more chance there is that the next victim is a person." Hef shoulders his glaive and looks to the rest of the group, waiting 'til everyone signals they are ready.
Marching order (Narrow Trails):
Marching order wider spaces:
Zak watches admiringly when Hef shoulders his glaive and gives the nod to Hef.
