(Rand, as the group banker, what is left per person after paying the deed for Tresendar Manor? It's a bit of an investment for you now - more than the 50% you originally agreed on - but certainly doable. It was 700 gp total. Any other items you want to buy or sell is fine, including potions of healing from the shrine! Most anything in the Player's Handbook tables are good...maybe not some of the alchemical goods or heavy warhorses with full barding! =)
(Start decisding what you want to do next - check out the rest of town? Do any of the side quests? Find and clear out Cragmaw Castle? Find Wave Echo Cave? Take some time to clean out your new digs? Something else?)
(Ha! I already forgot about trading in the gems... that makes for a convenient option for investment)
After the conversation with Sildar about Tresendar Manor, Rand calls a guild meeting. He sets down pouches with an additional 44 gold for each member that we received from the sale of the gems. "OK, everyone, after we divided the loot by our agreed sum, the guild has a little more than 500 gold. On the table is your share of the sale gems. If we all give up this portion, we will have just enough to purchase the manor and have a few gold pieces left over for incidentals. What do you say? I'll give up my share... at the very least, it is a good property investment at 30% off!"
"That sounds good to me. We are gonna need to work up some more funds soon though, I'm not sleeping down there until we get some new bunks. I think I'll head back down there and check in on Droop, ask him to just start cleaning the place up. Then I think I'll explore the town a little before I turn in for the night. In the morning we should get to work on one of those other jobs we heard about."
After checking on Droop Penumbra is going to quietly wander about town looking for anyone who seems like they might be involved in any kind of questionable business. She is looking to establish connections with any sort of black market or smuggling ring that might be present in Phandalin. She believes underworld contacts would be helpful for the new guild.
(Thanks again Zercious for putting the list(s) together for us. Much appreciated!!)
"I will give up my share as well, with one condition. I wish to establish a church inside the base in Ilmater's name dedicated to helping those in need. Nothing special or too big, one or two rooms should suffice."
(Agree that the next step should be finding the Wave Echo Cave!)
"Hmm.... a church helping the needy. So, basically we get to do good and get a tax write off? I guess I'd be for that, even if Ilmater would not be my first choice. One room, though, I think. Rand looks pensive for a moment, not wanting to disappoint Bankur's piety, casts a dream for the future."We can think of expanding the church when we build our keep on the surface."
Anyone have mapping skills that could redesign Tresendar to our liking?
"I would love to go to Echo Wave Cave, but no one knows where that is, right? So, if I put the pieces together right, Echo Wave Cave is lost, but Gundren found a map to it. He was attacked and goblins took the map to Cragmaw Castle. I think we might need to go there first unless we have some other way of locating Echo Wave Cave. Do we know where Cragmaw Castle is? I remember Sildar suggested that we ask around town for its location."
"I think I have an idea." Salty has a plan to spend the next day busking in the town square with the goal of building an audience large enough to litterally crowd source the possible locations of Cragmaw Castle. "I could use some help."
Droop is marginally productive in cleaning up the hideout, as his concept of a perfectly comfortable and livable place to live is vastly different from yours... Do you wish to motivate him? (Persuasion or intimidation - up to you - write it up and roll =).
Everyone in Phandalin seems to be honest, haed-working folks. Except perhaps Halia Thornton, who runs the Phandalin Miner's Exchange and who you perceive to be an ambitious and calculating human woman. The Miner’s Exchange is a trading post where local miners have their valuable finds weighed, measured, and paid out. In the absence of any local lord or authority, the exchange also serves as an unofficial records office, registering claims to various streams and excavations around the area. There isn’t any real gold rush in Phandalin, but enough wealth is hidden in the nearby streams and valleys to support a good number of independent prospectors
In your conversation with Halia, you flash one of the many common thieves' guild hand signs, and are surprised that she provides one of the suitable responses. This leads to a set of cautious phrases inserted into your talk, basically a covert pass/counterpass set of phrases that let you know each other as members. Since you are alone, Halia let's you in on a secret organization that she belongs to one that has helped her increase her wealth and power in town. "If you are interested in working with me to multiply our fortunes, let me know. The Zhentarim could use wily people like you. But do NOT mention this to anyone else. It is a secret I am trusting you with, and I will be displeased if other's find out." She shakes your hand and gives you 50 gold pieces for 'ridding the town of that Glassstaff character.'
The next day, while the townsfolk are still full of your deeds and their newfound freedom from the opposing weight of the Redbrands, Salty Joe puts on an impromptu performance in the town square, drawing a large lunch-time crowd in from the fields or their work. The folk are appreciative of the wonderful performance, tapping the feet, clapping , and singing along with the more well-used tunes the bard has picked up from his travels. While he plays, the rest of the group circulates the crowd, asking about the local area and if anyone might know the general whereabouts of Cragmaw Castle. What follows are the list of clues and insights from the crowd:
Daran Edermath, the orchard keeper, is a former adventurer and might know about this castle.
Qelline Alderleaf is a longtime friend of a druid named Reidoth. She suggests that you visit Reidoth and ask for his help, “since there’s not an inch of the land he doesn’t know.” She also tells you that Reidoth recently set out for the ruins of a town called Thundertree, just west of the Neverwinter Wood. The ruins are about fifty miles northwest of Phandalin, and she provides directions so you can easily find the place.
Sildar suggests the party might find the castle by searching the lands around the Triboar Trail for more raiding parties.
After Salty's spectacular performance and when the group reformes up Valefor says "Well I trust Sildar the most but blindly searching a league of forest that surrounds the Triboar seem a bit hit and miss but i did hear that a druid named Reidoth knows these land quite well that sounds like the best option to me."
"Aye, Quillene told that to me directly. The Druid is around Thundertree, just west of the Never Winter Wood. And, Mirna told me that there is an emerald necklace that they abandoned in Thundertree that we can have if we find it. Sounds like Thundertree may be our next destination. I'm with Valefor, let's hunt the druid in Thundertree!"
"Agreed friend Valefor, I trust Sildar as well but don't look forward to searching through that much forest. The rumors I heard about orc raiders spotted near the forest make it a tempting adventure, but perhaps that should be put aside until after we find the cave. Let us set out for Thundertree then!"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Penumbra treats Droop very kindly, she thanks him for the work he has done already and spends a little time helping him and showing him how she would like it done.
Persuasion: 3
Penumbra takes the money offered by Halia. "Thank you, I would certainly be interested in working with you and the Zhentarim so long as there is no slavery or similarly unsavory things involved. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against killing I'm just against killing harmless or innocent people. As far as secrecy goes I can keep my mouth shut, but my first loyalty is to my friends, we will be starting a new adventurers guild in Tresendar Manor. Should the Zhentarim start trouble with my friends or our new guild then we will have problems, but if we can avoid anything like that I think this arrangement can prove mutually beneficial."
Penumbra rejoins the group in the morning during Salty's performance. Handing 50 gold pieces to Rand she explains, "I ran into a woman named Halia Thornton last night, she operates the Phandalin Miner's Exchange and wanted to reward us for dispatching the Redbrands, apparently their presence was hurting her business. Don't forget to make sure Droop gets paid, he is doing his best."She takes a moment to inform Sildar about Droop and asks him to spread the word around town so that no one causes problems for the goblin then rejoins her companions once Salty has finished. "This Thundertree place sounds like as good a lead as any, I'm ready when you guys are."
(If you haven't already, be sure to click the Long Rest button on your character sheet to reset HP, spells, abilities, etc. Also, you each have an inspiration point! I need your marching order - both single file and two abreast. Finally, since you're going to be camping out again, I need a watch rotation.)
You will be travelling along the Troboar Trail through the Neverwinter Woods. This stretch of foothills and rolling, sparsely wooded plains extends between the Sword Mountains to the south and Neverwinter Wood to the north. It is mid-summer, with long sunny days and cool nights. There is always the occasional rainstorm rolling in, but today the sky is clear as you leave Phandalin. The past two days have been wonderful - you aren't quite 'well-rested' due to the late nights with plenty of food and ale, but still...this little town could make a nice home base. Even Droop is starting to grow on you, despite his almost complete inability to actually clean anything to your satisfaction.
With a last check of your packs and a wave to the townsfolk already on their way to the fields or their place of business, you set off to the north. It doesn't take long before you reach the main road running east-west and turn right, heading deeper into the wilds.
(I think Rand should take lead, I'll bring up the rear, with Valefor squarely in the middle and Penumbra and Salty Joe around him.)
As the party moves out into the woods, Bankur takes a deep breath, his customary smile settling in. "I miss the ocean my friends. We must insure one of our upcoming adventures takes us to the waves! There is no comparison to the beauty of the deep water."
