The Hobgoblin Captain, perhaps not even noticing the shots that failed to get near him, races towards the group, greatsword drawn, screaming something in goblin. He makes an attack on Jalt:
Attack: 5 Damage: 10
and another on Soar:
Attack: 9 Damage: 5
Both swings are clumsy, your shields easily able to block them and push the sword back; he is almost knocked off his feet by the force of his own swings rebounding and vibrating through him.
Elspeth will cast barkskin on herself, turning around as she does to instruct the guards to "Keep shooting at the rest of the hobgoblins! Distract them."Before running towards the captain, wildshaping as she does into the form of a brown bear, adjusting herself so she is flanking with Soar/Boar.
The young guards yelp in surprise at the sight of the bear, but do not drop their weapons or flee...
There's another hint of movement from beneath the wagon, and some crossbow bolts come flying out towards one of the Hobgoblins, though you are too far distant to perceive this clearly:
Attack: 22 Damage: 2 Attack: 21 Damage: 5
There's a gurgling sound; Hobgoblin 4 drops to the ground, the last of his strength gone. You still cannot see the source of the attack.

Boar, after blocking the heavy blows of the hobgoblin captain, brings her longsword in an arc up the front of the hobgoblin. She also pretends to start a bit at Elspeth turning into a bear.
Attack: 16 Damage: 13
Assuming that hits, she will drop 12 of smiting in as well.
This time, it's the hobgoblin's turn to show of his shield skills; Soar's stroke rings as it glances harmlessly off a metal part of the mostly wooden shield.
Soar, make a Deception check to feign surprise at the bear, with advantage because the guards are not really paying attention to you.
Hobgoblin 1 is dead, but Hobgoblins 2 and 3 shoot their longbows at the newly-appeared bear:
Attack: 23 Damage: 3 Attack: 23 Damage: 13
then approach, drop their bows and draw their longswords.

Round Two
Sulesdeg, Guard A and Guard B Hobgoblin 5 Jalt Albit, Gethyn, Cove and Harriman Hobgoblin Captain Elspeth Unknown allies under the wagon Soar Hobgoblins 2 and 3
Sulesdeg, Guard A and Guard B follow instructions; they move a little closer and shoot again, this time focusing on Hobgoblin 3:
Is there any way for Soar to try to catch the arrows with her gloves? Assuming they are too far away and also she has her hands mostly full with sword and then shield on her forearm. But might as well ask.
(No, not really. As you say, Soar has her hands full and she needs to have a free hand to use the gloves. For Soar, I think they'll mostly be useful in ambush situations, to avoid missile attacks when she hasn't drawn her weapon yet.)
(As Jalt is flanking with ElsBear, both of those attacks would be with advantage. The first two rolls were 6 and 17, so with advantage that was 17. Are you still using the channel divinity ability to turn that into a 27? Please roll a second attack with advantage.)
Jalt, your first strike, with the divine hand of Bahamut guiding you, hits the hobgoblin hard, and there's a flash of brilliant light as the stroke lands, though you're not sure if others saw it or only you. Your second strike also hits - only just, and for much less impact.
Soar, to the best of your knowledge, the guards didn't notice anything amiss in your surprise at Elspeth's transformation.
Albit, Gethyn, Harriman and Cove are focusing on the hobgoblins other than the captain. They back away from the melee as the other enemies approach, and fire another round of arrows:
Nate, back in the caravan, you can see that a battle is underway, though you are too far to intervene - well over a hundred feet away. Dammit, says a female dwarf guard you've seen giving orders to Jalt and Elspeth. They're fighting. At least it looks like they're winning.
Everyone is very nervous and looking around in case there are more enemies hiding in the shadows.
Elspeth is rather relieved to see no one hesitate at the sight of her transformation, encouraged by the guards' continued hail of arrows. She growls a little as an arrow from a hobgoblin sinks into her hide, twisting towards the hobgoblin captain to deliver a bite and a swipe of her claws.
Elspeth, you chow down on the Hobgoblin's armour, your teeth not quite getting through to do any damage. He twists, using his greatsword pommel to push back against you and free himself. As he does so, your claws catch his side and rip armour and flesh together; he snarls and glares at you, muttering something in goblin.
From beneath the wagon, two more shots come, both aimed at the now exposed Hobgoblin 5:
Boar sighs as her first strike misses, and then steps forward as the captain turns toward the bear, bringing her sword down toward his exposed side. She mutters under her breath, swearing and then saying something unintelligible, casting with her bonus action wrathful smite for 2 psychic damage on her next hit (and causing him to be frightened of her on a WIS 14 failure.

Bear's Hit Points: 35

Jalt
Albit, Gethyn, Cove and Harriman
Hobgoblin Captain
Elspeth
Unknown allies under the wagon
Soar
Hobgoblins 2 and 3
Sulesdeg, Guard A and Guard B follow instructions; they move a little closer and shoot again, this time focusing on Hobgoblin 3:
Attack: 23 Damage: 7
Attack: 15 Damage: 2
Attack: 11 Damage: 7
One arrow hits the hobgoblin's shoulder; the others he dodges - but only just.
Hobgoblin 5 approaches, and shoots, this time aiming at Sulesdeg, who has just shot Hobgoblin 3:
Attack: 4 Damage: 5
Sulesdeg the Pole takes a vicious and well-aimed arrow to the right leg, and shouts in pain, dropping his shortbow.

Jalt is up.
Is there any way for Soar to try to catch the arrows with her gloves? Assuming they are too far away and also she has her hands mostly full with sword and then shield on her forearm. But might as well ask.

As Jalt feels the sting of the earlier hit, he raises his war pick against the captain and swings down on him with the war pick
Attack: 21 Damage: 9
invoking War Priest he swings again and with guided strike (+10)
Attack: 16 Damage: 3 so 27 to hit
Hoard of the Dragon Queen - Jalt Rhogar - Dragonborn Cleric (9)
"Ive heard it both ways."
(As Jalt is flanking with ElsBear, both of those attacks would be with advantage. The first two rolls were 6 and 17, so with advantage that was 17. Are you still using the channel divinity ability to turn that into a 27? Please roll a second attack with advantage.)
Attack: 17 Damage: 3
(Yes keep the channel since I rolled the exact same thing lol)
Hoard of the Dragon Queen - Jalt Rhogar - Dragonborn Cleric (9)
"Ive heard it both ways."
(Soar belated deception check: 10)
Jalt, your first strike, with the divine hand of Bahamut guiding you, hits the hobgoblin hard, and there's a flash of brilliant light as the stroke lands, though you're not sure if others saw it or only you. Your second strike also hits - only just, and for much less impact.

Albit, Gethyn, Harriman and Cove are focusing on the hobgoblins other than the captain. They back away from the melee as the other enemies approach, and fire another round of arrows:
Attack: 4 Damage: 4
Attack: 19 Damage: 4
Attack: 16 Damage: 6
Attack: 6 Damage: 7
This time it's Harriman who gets the kill; she gives a battle cry of delight as Hobgoblin 3 goes down.
The Hobgoblin Captain is not in a fury; he's able to see clearly that his band is dwindling in number, but he continues to attack efficiently:
Attack: 6 Damage: 11
Attack: 8 Damage: 13
Both swings of the greatsword are aimed at Jalt; the first goes wide, the second connects and hurts badly, but the dragonborn is still up.
ElsBear is up.
Nate, back in the caravan, you can see that a battle is underway, though you are too far to intervene - well over a hundred feet away. Dammit, says a female dwarf guard you've seen giving orders to Jalt and Elspeth. They're fighting. At least it looks like they're winning.

Claw: 23 Damage: 13

From beneath the wagon, two more shots come, both aimed at the now exposed Hobgoblin 5:
Attack: 15 Damage: 2
Attack: 5 Damage: 7
But both go wide.
Boar is up.
Attack: 23 Damage: 6
She will also smite him for 8 radiant damage.
(Not great damage rolls wow but hopefully a hit!)
The Hobgoblin Captain does not see the strike coming, and it slashes down his side, cutting deep.
WIS save: 2
You see him turn, eyes widening in fear; he is frightened. He's also clinging on to life by a thread.
However, at the same time, Hobgoblin 2 drops his longbow, draws a sword and moves to flank ElsBear, slashing down:
Attack: 22 Damage: 8
However, he misjudges, and the sword clips a little fur as it passes by, leaving the bear unharmed.
