Harriman brings down Hobgoblin 5; a body slumps down in the tall grass, out of sight. Little now remains of the force that was attacking the wagon.
The wounded Hobgoblin Captain has a grin on his face; he seems to see his imminent death and welcome it. Yet the smile flickers; it's forced, and the fear he feels is clear on his face.
Attack: 9 Damage: 10
It's not even clear who he was trying to hit; the blade swings between Boar and ElsBear, missing both by a mile.

Elspeth, determined to bring down the captain, focuses her attacks on the hobgoblin captain, attempting to bite down on him before aiming a strike with her claws.

ElsBear's massive claws stab into the Hobgoblin Captain, and begin to rip and tear and rend. His battlecry begins, but doesn't last long as his throat is torn out, his face mauled and mangled, and his corpse collapses to the floor.
From beneath the wagon come more arrows:
Attack: 5 Damage: 7 Attack: 17 Damage: 6
But all miss.
Boar is up. Only Hobgoblin 2 remains alive from your enemies; he appears to be at full strength though.

Boar advances slowly to the south of ElsBear and hefts her sword. “Looks like this didn’t work out for you. Any chance you’d like to move along? Quickly? Make it easier on everyone? If not, well...”
She readies an attack with her sword, if he does anything but surrender or turn tail and run.

Honourless dog, the hobgoblin snarls in reply. Boar, your sword thrusts towards the creature's head, and would have pierced an eye if it had not ducked at the last second.
Sulesdeg, Guard A and Guard B make their shots, despite some severe wounds hampering two of their actions:
The last hobgoblin has fallen, and there is quiet for a moment. This battle could have been deadly, but you came with a substantial group behind you, and their arrows felled many of the enemy as you kept the hobgoblins busy on the front line. The quiet is interrupted by some moaning from Sulesdeg and the badly injured half-elf woman (Guard B). You can see that Jalt is also pretty badly wounded. Then there is a voice from beneath the wagon. Hey! Hey you! Thank you! We're coming out, please don't shoot!
Slowly, from beneath the wagon, emerge four figures. One is a human man in his thirties, wearing a brown coat and looking very much like some of the traders you've seen in Baldur's Gate and elsewhere. Holding his hand is a little girl, her face muddy and tear-stained, her eyes wide as she gapes at the scene in front of her. There is another man wearing leather armour, perhaps a guard or mercenary - he is wounded, and he pulls from beneath the wagon another in similar garb. At first you think this fourth person, a human man, is dead; the other guard is cradling his body and you see tears in his eyes. But the chest is moving up and down; he is still alive, though he may not last long without help.
Thank you, thank you so much, the man says, visibly shaking; he tries to move his hand to the girl's shoulder, but she refuses to let go. His other hand holds a light crossbow, pointing to the ground. Please, my guard is injured, badly. Can you lend us any aid?
Nate, back at the caravan, Losvius Longnose (Jalt and Elspeth's halfling employer) looks relieved at what he sees. The battle has come to an end. Come, we should go and speak to whoever this is, before my guards get us into trouble. He walks forward, accompanied by a guard, and Edhelri goes with him, beckoning you to follow her.
Soar dodges the falling hobgoblin and glances around her, shrugging at the remaining caravan guards. She begins to approach the most wounded of the archers and readying some of Kelemvor’s divine favor to heal them, when she hears and sees the people emerge under the caravan. She catches Jalt’s eye quickly and gives the barest of nods to the injured guard, as she walks forward to the new people at the direction of Losvius. She will get close to the injured group. “You can put that crossbow down, neighbor, no need for it anymore. I’ve stitched together some people before, so let me look at your friend there. He doesn’t seem very healthy. What happened here?”
As she is talking she is trying to distract everyone by getting them to tell their story. She will reach out and attempt to support the fourth injured man’s head and do a comically bad version of a medical examination, gently poking and prodding. As she does so, she puts 1 hp of lay on hands into him, and then another, up to 5 hp. She mutters to herself that it’s not his time yet, and that she has a friend who gets put out when he hears stories about people dying before their time, and that everyone’s days are numbered but she doesn’t think this is his day. She’s hoping she can save this one without revealing her abilities and then Jalt, who obviously used some of his divine power, can see to the caravan guards with more obvious healing magic. Or Elspeth, once she’s not a bear anymore.
As Boar attempts to treat the injured man, unsurprisingly everyone's attention is on her. However, as the trader tells his tale, the focus shifts to him and Boar is able to attempt to heal the fallen guard without being noticed. Boar can roll a Persuasion, Performance or [Tooltip Not Found] check (or anything else you think makes sense) to attempt to do this unseen.
We are on our way to Baldur's Gate, of course. I've been this way a few times before, and the worst we've ever seen is wolves and maybe a couple of goblins that one time. Nothing like this. They ambushed us - it was like a military operation. They killed the horses, and we were lucky to make it under the wagon. Saran wasn't lucky, of course, and he indicates the wounded guard. I think...
The little girl tugs on his hand. Is Saran okay? she asks.
It's okay, sweetie, the man replies. He seems to be trying to think of an answer when a group arrives from the main caravan, including Losvius, Eldkin, Edhelri and Nate. This provides sufficient distraction that Boar can roll the check with advantage. Nearby, you see the guards who fought with you begin to tend to Sulesveg and the half-elf woman's wound, which seem not to be life-threatening.
What happened? Losvius asks. He seems to be directing this at Jalt and Elspeth.
Hobgoblins Jalt replies as he points to the scene. They attacked this group. From what we've gathered, they were well coordinated and not just a bunch of random bandits. If not this group, surely they would have tried to ambush us. But that is no longer an issue. He grimaces as he feels the effects of his wounds. Might just need some time to heal up before we start up again.

Hoard of the Dragon Queen - Jalt Rhogar - Dragonborn Cleric (9)
As soon as the battle's ended, Elspeth reverts back into her normal form, walking towards the huddled traders with the intention of comforting them.
"You have nothing to worry about, of course we'll do our best to help you out." She'd offer to check up on the wounds of the other guards too, including Jalt, but first she'd answer Losvius question. "Turns out there were a few hobgoblins. We managed to rescue the traders they were hassling. It's a good thing we caught on, but we'll probably need some time before we're all ready to move on. I have some basic medical training, enough to get us more or less patched up before we continue."
A dangerous foe. You would have done well to return to the caravan and seek more aid before blundering into the fray, says Edhelri.
We are very grateful nonetheless, good folk, the merchant replies. My name is Toller, this is my daughter Hannica, and my guards Yisto and Saran.
Boar, you are able to perform a basic medical examination and tend to Saran's wounds sufficiently to make your use of divine healing power; Yisto is too upset to pay close attention, but when you are finished, he looks at what you've done. It's... he's going to be okay, isn't he? I don't think... this isn't as bad as... he'll be okay, right? Eldkin (the female dwarf guard commanding Elspeth and Jalt) comes over and takes a look. Not too bad at all. He'll be fine. Best not walk for a day or two, mind you. You have some decent healing skills there. Boar, you don't get a sense that Eldkin suspects your use of magic, just that she's pleased the injury isn't too severe.
However, as you stand up, you feel a pressure on your leg, and looking down you see that the merchant's daughter Hannica, who can't be more than four years old, has gripped your leg and is hugging you. Thank you. Thank you. she says, her face buried in your leggings.
Very well, Losvius says. What now?
My animals are dead, the wagon stuck, Toller replies. I would continue on to Baldur's Gate, but will need to find horses or oxen for the wagon. He looks over at the caravan. You seem a large group. Have you any to sell? I can pay.
We'll make an hour's rest here. Time to finish tending our wounds, and for you to talk to the traders and travellers, Edhelri replies. The merchant nods, and says to Boar: Would you... mind keeping an eye on her for a while? He walks over and pats his daughter on the shoulder, and doesn't wait for you to answer. Stay here with the nice guard lady, I'll be back soon. He and Losvius walk to the caravan to discuss horses. Hannica shows no sign of releasing her grip around you.
Elspeth, if you are assisting Sulesdeg and the other guard (her name is Jak), make a Medicine check. Are you using any magical healing?
As the caravan sets up to rest for an hour, it closes the gap and surrounds the stranded wagon. You have an hour to take a short rest if you wish, and to talk to anyone you wish.
Could I also please ask Soar and Elspeth to make CHA saving throws?
Nate watches with extreme anxiety as he can't really see much details from where Edhelri's wagon is. He sees the arrows flying, hears the metal clanging and the subsequent screams of pain to follow. He is praying that Soar, Jalt and Elspeth do not get injured or even worse die, and frankly he doesn't give a shit at all about any of the other guards or merchants in the caravan. oh god this better get us closer to the cult... come on guys, you got this He watches on as the battle eventually comes to an end, and then is relieved when Losvius Longnose orders the lagging caravan to proceed forward since the battle has ended.
Nate would've moved ahead with his employer Edhelri, and when they all got to the battle scene, Nate would've made direct eye contact with Soar, Jalt and Elspeth making a sigh of relief when he sees they are all alive. He notices Jalts wounds and the others and then will say to his Employer "Ma'am... if I may... youza know I have my magical powers to find them wolves and whatnot... well, I've also taken a kin to the healing powers as well. If you don't mind, how about I start tendin' to the wounded folk? Least I could do seein' I was useless in the scuffle and well you hired me for help and I'm an honorable man and I feel I need to uphold my side of our agreement."
Nate's going to head over to the most wounded person and begins to heal them, laying his hands on their wounds "not to worry now... let me help you...", not waiting for Edhelri to answer him either way. If she does try to stop him, he will stop. I think some or most folks around know that this "cowboy" Nate already has magical abilities as they saw him do it earlier and then he got scolded for it. Nate would make sure he keeps 3 of the 7 uses for Soar, Jalt and Elspeth if they are injured (Jalt is, quite badly, correct?)
Nate has 7 Cure Wounds slots (4 - L1 and 3 - L2). Let me know if you need any rolls.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Elspeth is indeed going to use magical healing - one cure wounds (level one: 5) on the most injured, and another on the remaining if they request it and if Nate does not get to them first. She'll save her 2nd level spell slots for Jalt, at least one and more should he need them (8). She nods when Edhelri gives her advice, trying to look contrite. "I thought it would be best to dispatch them before they had too much time to prepare. I'll do differently next time."
Nate, you see Edhelri look at you, her face blank. She seems to think for a moment, then nod her head. If you do indeed have healing powers, by all means use them. A rare gift, she adds.
A single cure wounds each will be enough for Sulesdeg and Jak. Sulesdeg stares at you in surprise: You’re a healer? Apparently the minor tricks you performed previously did not indicate that you had healing magic, which is a relatively rare and much-prized talent and surprising in a caravan guard - though given Nate’s life so far, it makes a lot of sense that he wouldn’t know that.
Elspeth, Jalt and Boar, you all see the reaction that Nate gets when he uses healing magic openly - are you going to do the same?

Round Three

Sulesdeg, Guard A and Guard B
Hobgoblin 5
Jalt
Albit, Gethyn, Cove and Harriman
Hobgoblin Captain
Elspeth
Unknown allies under the wagon
Soar
Hobgoblins 2
Sulesdeg, Guard A and Guard B are seeming increasingly confident of victory, and they shoot their bows at Hobgoblin 5:
Attack: 20 Damage: 5
Attack: 23 Damage: 7
Attack: 17 Damage: 2
The Hobgoblin is wounded, but only one arrow finds its mark. Nevertheless, the guards look pleased - the enemy is being whittled down.
The Hobgoblin moves into an area of bushes, seeking cover, and fires an arrow at Guard A as he does so:
Attack: 9 Damage: 7
The guard, a young half-elf woman, screams as the arrow pierces her chest. It seems not to have hit any major organs, but it has hurt her badly.
Jalt is up.
Jalt noticing the captain struggling a bit, moves in and grabs him casting Inflict Wounds Attack: 14 Damage: 21 and after casting moves back a few feet

"Ive heard it both ways."
Jalt, you lunge forward but fail to connect with the Hobgoblin Captain; he whirls and slashes his blade at you as you move back:

Attack: 8 Damage: 11
His aim is as poor as yours, however, and you back away without taking any injury.
Albit, Gethin, Harriman and Cove spread out, trying to finish off the remaining hobgoblins:
Attack: 16 Damage: 7
Attack: 5 Damage: 5
Attack: 5 Damage: 5
Attack: 11 Damage: 3
Harriman brings down Hobgoblin 5; a body slumps down in the tall grass, out of sight. Little now remains of the force that was attacking the wagon.

Elspeth, determined to bring down the captain, focuses her attacks on the hobgoblin captain, attempting to bite down on him before aiming a strike with her claws.
Bite: 17 Damage: 7
Claws: 20 Damage: 10

Sulesdeg, Guard A and Guard B make their shots, despite some severe wounds hampering two of their actions:
Attack: 22 Damage: 2
Attack: 10 Damage: 4
Attack: 18 Damage: 3
Two arrows to the chest, but the Hobgoblin still stands.
(Before that, it took its own attack against ElsBear:
Attack: 15 Damage: 8
Jalt is up.
Jalt moves forward alongside Elsbear and takes a swing at the remaining hobgoblin with his war pick
Attack: 5 Damage: 8
Hoard of the Dragon Queen - Jalt Rhogar - Dragonborn Cleric (9)
"Ive heard it both ways."
It's a clumsy strike; Jalt, you are feeling your wounds a bit more than usual. The hobgoblin sneers. Weak. Cannot even kill...
Four arrows strike out from behind you, as Albit, Gethyn, Harriman and Cove shoot:
Attack: 19 Damage: 7
Attack: 22 Damage: 5
Attack: 5 Damage: 5
Attack: 10 Damage: 5
Two of the arrows find their mark, and the Hobgoblin fails to complete his sentence.
