As Soar gets in the man's face, Jalt moves his hands in an intricate design and says origato nomenes svaust lekar, renthisj truth. Casting Zone of Truth
Elspeth shakes her head at Cove's words. "I don't care what he did. Who decided it was within their authority to bury a man up to his neck? Right now, Harriman, I want you to run back and get that shovel." She kneels down, jabbing at the dirt around the man to check how firmly he was buried.
If the man wakes up thanks to Soar's healing, Elspeth will uncork her waterskin to offer the man some water.
As Soar touches the head, a jolt of magical healing power surges through the man. He gasps and wakes, eyes wide in panic and horror. He begins to cough, but after a moment is able to hold himself together enough to accept Elspeth's waterskin and drink deep.

Jalt, you feel your spell take effect, and so does the man. His eyes widen and he looks in your direction, blinking a little in the bright light of day. Who... who are you?
After a moment, and after he has taken another drink of water, he manages to say: I... they buried me here. They... he seems to be struggling to say something. Eventually he continues: I know what they wrote on my forehead. I did not break any oath to the ones who put me here. You know that's the truth. Please help me.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Nate follows Soar as they reach the front of the caravan and see the man buried. He will say to Soar, Jalt and Elspeth "Well Bob's your Uncle! Well you guys look like you gotta good ole' handle on this here mishap. Lemme go take a look-see in the woods...."
He sees Jalt and the others immediately tend to the man and also start to get some information from him, so Nate will begin to walk the perimeter of the woods, like maybe 50 feet max and see if he can get any other details that Soar and Jalt might've missed or if there are any types of tracks or trails that lead away from the man that might've been overlooked.
Boar will help dig the man out whenever a shovel arrives, and leave the questioning to someone else. She will try to keep her head close to him to try to “hear” some of what he is saying.
He hesitates to speak again, and looks nervous and wary of you. When he speaks, he seems to be choosing his words carefully. I was a... travelling with a caravan. Some of the members of the caravan... framed me, accusing me of passing information to bandits. It was not true, but many others believed them. So they left me here. He looks exhausted, and desperate. It is not true! You know that. I have... I know of this magic you have. You know I am telling the truth. Please help me.
What magic? Cove asks curiously. He and Harriman stand with shovels. Losvius and Eldkin have joined them.
Losvius spits on the ground. An oathbreaker and a liar. Best leave him here. None of our business.
A small crowd is gathering, and though they have not heard what the man has said, they have seen him and they did hear Losvius. There's a general murmur of agreement.
So you are innocent of any wrongdoing? Jalt questions the man. If they were trying to prove a point by burying you here... do you have any reason why someone would frame you? Or a reason why we should free you?

I do not believe that any man or woman is innocent of any wrongdoing. And you should set me free because that's the honourable thing to do. Please, he pleads. The people who did this to me are... who framed me... they are not good people. If you are a good person, please help me.
A likely tale, someone comments from the gathering crowd, you're not sure who. I say we leave him. Another murmur of agreement, this time louder.
What is your name? Jalt says as he motions for one of the shovels. You said that you did not break an oath to the ones who buried you. So to whom did you break that oath? And what was it? Jalt continues with his questions, ignoring all the talk from everyone behind him

'Oathbreaker' is on my forehead because that was the lie they spun to get rid of me. It refers to no real oath, just part of their lie.
So you say, says Losvius. It seems to me more likely he is simply a liar, a thief and a traitor who is getting what he deserves. In any case, it is not our business. Why should we endanger ourselves by setting him free? There's a mixed response to this from the gathered crowd. Cove and Harriman both have shovels, but as yet they don't make any move to start digging.
The Gods will punish us for interfering, one voice calls.
The Gods look kindly on mercy, another says. Dig the poor lad up.
So he can slit our throats as we sleep? If the Gods believe he should be saved, they will send someone to...
"If the Gods believe he should be saved"Jalt repeats this phrase. I am of the belief that they have put this man across our path for reasons we can not fathom. Many others have passed through here and left this man. But a feeling in my soul tells me to believe this man and free him. I will trust him. I will keep an eye on him. I'm not asking any of you to do any of that. This man's burden will be mine.

Elspeth is visibly upset at the lack of mercy shown by the crowd. "What kind of justice is in leaving a man buried in the middle of nowhere? At least we can bring him to a city and if anyone has a grievance let him be judged there."
Losvius shakes his head. Keep a close eye on him. I'll not be responsible for any mischief or worse he gets up to. He walks away.
The crowd disperses; some less convinced than others, but many looking ashamed and not meeting your eye. A few give you approving smiles and nods, and move back.
Over the next hour, Jalt and Boar dig up the man. He thanks you in the beginning, but does not talk much as the process gets underway. Cove and Harriman offer to help; you may take their assistance if you wish. It's tiring work, and several people come to gawk who had not been in the crowd earlier, but they back away as the two guards give them stern looks.
When you are close to finishing, the man stands in a hole and you are ready to lift him out. He gratefully offers his hands for you to pull him free, and it is at this point that Boar and Jalt both notice, tucked under his forearm, a small tattoo of a harp.
Finally standing freed from his prison, the man named Carlon looks at Jalt, a little hesitantly. The truth spell has of course long since expired. Thank you. I... well, I wasn't sure you were going to help me. I am grateful that you did. May I ask your name?

Worst case, Nate will be happy to get a few minutes of peace alone in the forest while the others assess the situation at hand.
Nate, you get a few minutes of peace among the trees and don't see anything noteworthy.

Carlon. Close your eyes. Jalt takes the shovel and starts to dig. Someone help me dig. This man doesnt deserve to be buried like this.

Nate doesn’t care either way about this man and is not surprised whatsoever to see Jalt’s reaction and continues to watch on.

(How close are we to Waterdeep/Daggerford?)
Jalt, roll a Persuasion check, with advantage with help from Elspeth.
