Waterdeep Interlude Part Six: The convey gathering place
It is, as you were told, a large empty patch of ground that is now no longer empty. You count around twenty carts assembled, dotted around in no particular order or pattern. People come and go, inspecting equipment, loading goods onto wagons, there's some shouting but mostly you see people busy at their work.
You can all make a Perception check as you walk up to the area, to see what you notice first. And let me know if you are looking out for anything in particular.
You see a human surrounded by a group of people, seemingly in a disagreement, though not a very heated one. You would guess that is Ardred, who is in charge.
To one side, you see the cultists, their three wagons now in a cluster of seven. They are sitting and watching the proceedings, apparently not too troubled, but also not mingling with the other travellers.
You don't really notice much else, not with those rolls. :)
Soar, the tavern that catches your attention is the Gawenknife Inn, on a nearby street corner. It seems fairly busy, as the day is drawing to a close.
Given the chaos, Soar's tempted to try to gather info in the Gawenknife Inn and stay out of sight of the cultists, before trying to check in with Ardred.
Nate would've been looking for the cultists, where they are in the caravan, how many wagons if not the same as before, their general attitude and demeanor. Perception20
He would then, without really thinking it through, would walk close to them, to see if they try and interact with him. He's not going to stare or anything, just walk near them, to gauge if his assumption is correct in that the cultists aren't aware that Nate is part of the infiltration team that they know about. Depending on their reaction to him, he will, or should know if they are on to him yet like they are with the other party members.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Nate, you see the cultists. Specifically, you see their leader, the man named Henton, talking to the stranger who joined the caravan in Daggerford, the man you overheard speaking to the cultists at the inn. They seem calm but wary as always. It seems they are comfortable with the owners of the other four wagons they are now with - you would guess that they are fellow cultists, though you don't know that for sure.
199
As you are watching, a man bumps into you. Oh, sorry, he says, and then he gives a start of surprise. It's Carlon, who was clearly so absorbed in remaining hidden from the cultists that he walked right into you.
You also see Jamna, though she is much more successful in keeping hidden. She notices you attention, gives you a wink, and then resumes talking to someone near her.
(If Soar notices Carlon bump into Nate, she'll give him a look and then a little nod-head-tug pointing to the Inn. "Thirsty, and could use some familiar company. You?")
Soar nods and follows. She looks for a table or a booth out of the way and out of the line of sight of most people inside or outside. She'll sit down, look at Caron, smile a bit, and wait for him to speak.
Jalt would do his best to not make eye contact with anyone outside of the group. He doesnt want to alarm the cultists, so he'll remain back and follow Soar to the inn to go speak to Carlon.

You sit, the five of you, at a table in a dark and dingy corner of the dark and dirty common room of the Gawenknife Inn. This is not a pleasant place, and the regulars are eyeing you, though keeping their distance. Carlon seems at ease, but he leans in and keeps his voice very low as he speaks to you all.
Sorry about the bump, friend. I'm getting nervous. It's not good to be nervous.
Your friends have friends. I guess we knew that. Four more wagons, and about a dozen more souls. There's a lot of them now. It would be hard to take them on all at the same time, even for you four.
Carlon seems to be about to say something else, but hesitates, and then changes the subject. So, what have you been up to in Waterdeep? Caused any trouble?
Assuming we picked up on him clearly trying to change the subject.
No trouble at all. What is it that concerns you Carlon? Jalt replies. Nervous is definitely not something we can afford to be at this point in the journey.

Will anyone be traveling along with us? Or is this another job entrusted on us? Jalt pushes Its becoming more and more apparent that everyone has plans for us, but don't like to include us in them.

"Any changes here other than their new friends? And yes, no trouble. We looked for our mutual friends, and didn't really find them. Flighty. Stopped by some old friends of mine, did some shopping, ready to head out into, well, wherever. Eager for gossip on that gent over there running the show. Any advice or tips? He seemed to be arguing with someone. And yes, as our big friend over here just said, we're almost more in the dark now than we were when we started. Light of any kind would be welcome."
She's trying to get a sense of anyone paying attention to them, and a feel for the room in the Inn. Are people eying the group because they're new, or because something odd is going on around them, or because they know who the group is? She's also trying to play things cool and carry herself like she belongs here as a fellow traveler, literally.
None of you can really get a read on Carlon, which makes sense given what he does for a living.
To Jalt, he grins: That's about right. Seems to come with the territory. I suppose you get used to it. Not completely, though.
To Soar: Nah, no big changes. Your friends seem glad to be away from the caravan. Their whole 'leave us alone' thing was really grating on the rest of the travellers. That guy they're with, they call him Jos, he's hanging around them but... I dunno. Seems to be with them, but not one of them.
There might be more help. Someone a bit better in a fight than me. You guys can handle yourselves, I reckon you proved that enough. Well, I'm better sticking to the shadows. There's work for me in the city, always. Anyway, I'm waiting for a message; meet me here tomorrow morning before the convoy sets off, and I'll have more for you.
Ardred? The guy in charge? Seems fine. He's the boss, so people go to him with their stupid problems and shout at him when they don't get everything they want. No more than usual. I doubt he knows anything about your friends, but I've been wrong before.
Soar, you manage to look like a traveller, but as to whether there's someone watching you, you can't really say.
As Nate notices Henton and the new guy, as well as Jamna, he is startled by Carlon when he bumps into him. Nate was in a kind of trance, looking at Henton and trying to gauge how he reacted to seeing Nate etc. and then all of a sudden he gets startled by Carlon bafoon watch where you're walking
"Dude....." is all Nate says as he now supposes the right thing to do is follow Carlon and everyone else into the inn so he can explain if he's learned anything about the cultists. As Soar and Jalt start to question him and lay out everything seemingly perfectly, Nate stays quiet. He's not surprised to hear Carlon won't be joining us on the next leg of this journey, but perks up when he hears that there might be more help.

Nate would've also said to Soar "a cat? Yeah... I suppose that could work. But I have something else I want to try first... just to see..."
This would've been said before they got to the convoy gathering place.
