Hoard of the Dragon Queen - Jalt Rhogar - Dragonborn Cleric (9)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Troll's DEX save: 15
The troll doesn't even notice as the burst of radiant fire slams into its side. It teeters, looks confused, and then topples over, dead. As it has taken fire damage this turn, you know that it won't regenerate and revive.
All that remains fighting you is one very badly injured drake - does Jalt still want to use a spell slot to cast Spiritual Weapon?
Attack: 19 Damage: 10 plus 3 bless to hit, and plus 2 radiant damage from divine favor Extra Attack: 14 Damage: 13 plus 4 bless to hit, and plus 1 radiant damage from divine favor
The drake, which had been barely hanging on to life, driven by its master's rage and its own desire to fight and kill, is destroyed by Soar's attack.
Combat is over.
You stand near a circle marked by two strange standing stones. Relative quiet comes over the mountainside again, though Nate's strange magical storm still hovers, crackling with lightning bursts, some sixty feet away. There's no immediate sign of anyone else nearby, though anyone in the mansion could have heard or seen the disturbance. There are three drake corpses and one dead troll lying on the ground.
After Nub fries the troll, Nate would snap his fingers and make the cloud disappear.
"Ummm.... sorry everyone. I haven't used that spell yet and... well, I thought I could move the cloud. I just knew I had to warn you guys when I saw that patrol coming..."
"Nice work.. Soar, are you ok?" as Nate looks at the gaping wound on her clavicle he was trying to fix in battle.
"So... should we try again to get closer to the lodge? This time, I was thinking of just getting relatively close and then taking a spider form to have the best chances of getting close without attention."
"Yeah he got me pretty badly there, didn't he?"Soar says, tending to her shoulder, and laying on hands for 5 hp. She looks at the drakes to see if they have any markings, any harnesses, anything that'd suggest if they're anything other than wild. "I can keep going. Let's circle around the house and scope it out. Maybe we'll see someone coming out to check out the lightning, and it'd be better if we're not here. Let's do a loop around and see what we see. Then we'll find out a way in."
Soar, the dead drakes each wear a steel collar with a loop that could hold a chain.
You circle round, through the forest; the path is not easy, and it takes some time. You lose sight of the lodge from time to time, but when you can see it, you don't see or hear any signs of alarm, or anyone coming out to look for the troll or for attackers.
You now stand some sixty feet behind the lodge. You did see a large front door round the other side; now, standing at the back of the lodge, you also see a smaller closed door set into the wall, most likely for use by servants. You can't tell if it is locked of course, not from where you are standing. You can see that it is used; a track leads to it and shows signs of a reasonable amount of use.

"I can keep going too. Ok, looks like there are no more patrols.... for now. I bet they will send one out soon though when the other one doesn't return."
"I think this back door looks like the best option, I wonder if it's locked? Let me take a quick listen first."
Nate would dart up to the lodge wall beside the door, and take a listen against the door to see if he might be able to hear anything beyond the door. He won't try to open it, yet.
Nate, you hear sounds coming from the other side of the door; movement, voices, work. But nothing distinct. All you can tell is that there is almost certainly someone there.
Soar would be up for entering in the back, less expected. She holds off on again suggesting Nate wildshape to scout, since she does that all the time and she feels bad putting him in danger.
”Well, should we just go in? Or create a distraction?”
Nub indicates "I think we can safely assume that the voices inside belong to dragon cultists and other ne'er do wells given the drakes and troll patrol. How about a fireball lobbed into the house as a distraction? It is extreme I know, but from our interactions with the dragon cult so far and what you have all told me of them, I am starting to think it is a kill or be killed situation."

Soar, you feel the magical healing pulse through your biggest wound closes.
The remaining drake continues to bite at Soar:
Attack: 22 Damage: 6
Its teeth grip your shoulder and pull, re-opening the wound that Nate has just healed.
Nub and Jalt are up.
Nub once again casts Toll the Dead at the troll with his action, DC14 WIS save or it takes 4 damage and slams the flaming sphere into the troll with his bonus action for 5 fire damage if it fails a DC14 DEX save. If it ends its turn within 5 feet of the sphere it will take 9 fire damage if it fails another DC14 DEX save.
Troll DEX save: 6
Troll DEX save: 8
Though the troll takes a lot of necrotic damage, it seems to be the fire damage that angers it most.
Jalt is up.
Jalt takes aim at the troll and casts Sacred Flame Dex 14 save for 11 and with his bonus action will cast Spiritual Weapon and a large, spectral floating war pick appears in front of the Troll and takes swing at the troll Attack: 8 Damage: 10

"Ive heard it both ways."
Troll's DEX save: 15

Jalt would hold that spell then once he saw the Troll fall.

"Ive heard it both ways."
Fair enough. Jalt, you don't cast that second spell.
The troll is dead, and does not regenerate.
Soar is up. You face one remaining Drake.
Soar grins and whirls on the drake with Talon:
Attack: 19 Damage: 10 plus 3 bless to hit, and plus 2 radiant damage from divine favor
Extra Attack: 14 Damage: 13 plus 4 bless to hit, and plus 1 radiant damage from divine favor
(At least I hit decently, but wow four 1s in a row on damage rolls, lovely.)

There's no immediate sign of anyone else nearby, though anyone in the mansion could have heard or seen the disturbance. There are three drake corpses and one dead troll lying on the ground.
What would you like to do?
Nub slams the flaming sphere into the troll twice more, just to make sure it doesn't heal and stand back up.
After Nub fries the troll, Nate would snap his fingers and make the cloud disappear.
"Ummm.... sorry everyone. I haven't used that spell yet and... well, I thought I could move the cloud. I just knew I had to warn you guys when I saw that patrol coming..."

"Hopefully there are no other patrols."
The troll begins to burn; the smell is not pleasant, as Nub sets its body aflame.
Nate's storm disappears in a few seconds, a few random lightning strikes hitting some trees but causing no forest fires.
Nub hold up his rope and says "if anyone needs a place to rest and recuperate, let me know. If not, I think Nate's plan is a good one."
"Yeah he got me pretty badly there, didn't he?" Soar says, tending to her shoulder, and laying on hands for 5 hp.
