"Hmmm... you're probably right about the inn. I am not sure if I can contain myself if there's going to be a bunch of drunk cultists, or at minimum folk who respect and praise the cult and not, well, freak out. Like it's going to be madness in there if what you say is true."
"Ok, let us use Nub's rope trick outside of town then so we can get a good rest and ensure no scuffles with them*spits*at the inn."
"I think we should just leave the captain be... like you say, no sense tipping off the bunch and having the castle just leave on us. Unless you think you can fake being one of those scum? I know I can't... although, I could ride on your shoulder as a spider should things get hairy if you wanted me to come with you."
The rope trick is a fine ideaJalt says. No reason to stir up the hornet's nest before we can make certain that we are where we need to be. And for once I agree with Nate, I can not count on myself to not engage with cultists if they are drunk and acting brashly. I shall stand back and watch from afar to not arouse any suspicion.

Hoard of the Dragon Queen - Jalt Rhogar - Dragonborn Cleric (9)
Is there a way to find out where this Captain Othelstan person lives? Is there an obviously fancy house? Soar's wondering if scoping out where he does business might be a good idea. To check for documents, basic activity, or even try to grab him and ask questions. Might be brash if we're supposed to be talking our way into the castle, but maybe he's not that connected to that part of things so there might be upside.
You could ask around about Othelstan's house. None of the buildings so far has stood out as the residence of a particularly important person.
You are standing around off to the side of the square, is that right? Not too far from the tavern, but away from other people who might try to overhear what you're saying?
(Yes, the conversation was meant to be very quiet, slowly walking to and then around the inn.)
Soar does a walk around the outside of town and looks for a quiet place either obscured by trees or on the backside of a building with no one paying attention, trying to find a good place for the rope trick. "We want to start this right when we're ready to rest, right? So if we have anything more to do, we should do it, and then go rest. Before the sun goes down, I'd like to look for this captain's house and look around, scope it out, maybe find him and... deal with him after asking questions about what's going on. I'm happy to be told that's a bad idea, but we might learn something so it might be worth the risk. But to Jalt's point, an angry hornet's nest might be what happens if we poke around."
"Soar, if you want company, I can spider it up and get on your shoulder. Like old times. Like Elspeth used to do"
If Soar decides to go stake out the captain's place and/or interact with him and wanted backup, Nate will wildshape into a spider and hop on her shoulder for the ride. If not, he will hop into Nub's rope trick and rest it out.
Nub pours water over the rope-trick idea "unfortunately the extra-dimensional space only lasts for an hour, so we may need to camp-out if we are not staying at the inn."
Me too, I assumed the rope trick was 8 hours. Shoot. Nate would like to help Soar find a suitable campsite which is out of view and seems safe for a night, with watches.
There is a small forest nearby, perhaps a half hour's walk. You could reach it around sundown. Make a Survival check to find a suitable campsite out of sight of the village.
The site you find is a few minutes into the forest; it's a natural depression in the land so it would be hard to spot from far away, but you see little evidence that others have been here recently. There's space to set up a tent, and a campfire if you wish - the weather is chilly, and you could do with the warmth. There's a risk that the smoke and light might be visible in the dark...
If you are resting here, please give me perception checks for first, second and third watch.
Nate would set up his tent. It is 2 person, so he offers someone to stay with him if they so desire. "I am a very quiet sleeper. I know, believe me." Nate laughs to himself at that impossibility.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Soar shares her groceries she got at the market! Fresh bread, fruits, veggies, some salted meats and cheeses. Soar will take third watch. Perception: 4

As getting ready to camp, Nub will use his background Outlander: Wanderer feature to try and find food and water for the party ("provided that the land offers berries, small game, water, and so forth"). Nub will then ritual cast Alarm when they set up camp, centering the 20 ft cube on the party and making it an audible alarm. Nub will offer to take the second watch - Perception: 18
[Oops, we were typing at the same time - we would have food for a feast.]

(Soar is fine with this -- she doesn't want to speak for Nub or Jalt...)
(I also don't want to move forward until Nub and Jalt have had their say.)

(Ah, I confused our short rest with our long rest in the cavern!) Can we see a decent place just out of town to camp?

Survival, with advantage for help from Soar? Team effort?

I'm sure someone is helping.

He'd offer to take the first watch.
Perception: 26
He'd also forage for food instead of eating a nasty ration again. Survival: 19
Nate would also start the campfire. He is ok with the risk if the other are.
Nate, you spend an hour searching around and manage to find some edible plants and berries, enough for yourself only.
Who's taking second and third watch?
