At fifty feet, no response. At twenty feet, no response. You are now standing at the drawbridge, about to cross into the castle; the statues are still twenty feet away, within the gate tunnel that passes through the thick walls. The wagon is ambling its slow way towards you, and will take a few minutes to catch up.
Please give me a marching order, and let me know how you will proceed.
"Well... maybe we only need the banner if the drawbridge is closed?" Nate looks back at the oncoming wagon. "Let's keep walking... I don't really want that wagon to catch up with us either."
Nate is nervous. He won't go first, but is likely second because he's quite nervous and impatient to get in there. He's worried this already isn't going according to plan with no acknowledgement of the banner and password as of yet from the castle inhabitants.
Soar nods, not really nervously per se, but her smile has faded a bit. She steps all the way up to the tunnel and repeats the phrase every ten feet. Anything changing?
So Soar leading, Nate second, and Nub and Jalt bringing up the rear.
You cross the drawbridge. Nothing happens. You are standing at the entrance to the tunnel, just before you would pass under the portcullis and then past the statues. Nothing happens.
Please give me a marching order, and let me know how you will proceed.
If it is single file then Nub will go directly behind Nate. If they can approach three abreast, Nub will be beside Soar, two abreast he will be beside Nate.
[It looks like we were posting at the same time, I was a responding to your earlier post. I'm happy to go single file if it makes more sense. With your last post, Nub will actually suggest a change.]
Nub offers to walk in front and go under the portcullis and past the statues first and act as a 'banner-person', asking quietly "wouldn't cultists have other people carry their banner for them?"
Soar nods semi-uneasily at Nub, offering him the banner to hold high. "I think the banner gets us in, and maybe they assume we're just supposed to be here. Which we are. We totally are,"Soar says to her companions.
She looks up, ready to jump forward quickly if the portcullis drops, and she steps underneath it and quickly past it, ready to spring away if it drops. Then she looks at the statues, and will shout the passphrase again if they do anything at all. If not, she'll just walk forward with confidence. "As my deity always says, 'act like you're supposed to be there'..." she mutters to herself. She's also ready to start talking to anyone she sees or suspects is there listening, concocting a short story about how they have pressing business with the lord of the castle.
Jalt takes up the rear and you can see he is growing visibly tired of this ruse. He manages to bit his tongue for now, but the gears are turning. Let us continue forth until we are as close as we can be. As much as I would like to tear down whatever lies inside, I'm trying my best here. He looks to the others as they have all dressed rather warmly for the trip and lets out a slight smirk. I hope the other cultists are also dressed for the occasion.

Hoard of the Dragon Queen - Jalt Rhogar - Dragonborn Cleric (9)
Nub walks forward, banner held high and goes up to oner statue and says "Tiamat, our Mother and Strength” and then to the other and says “Tiamat, our Mother and Strength” again before passing by them and through the gate.
He isn't sure about the idea of Nub taking the banner at first... "Hmmm. That is a good point though about the cultists having other people carry the banner. Ok good idea."
To Jalt, realizing he might be right... "I hope so too!"
Nate continues forth, warily walking over the drawbridge, and following Soar under the portcullis and also taking a quick glance at the statues.
Nate would be constantly looking around for people, or if anyone or thing has noticed us yet. Also, can the wagon behind us see us yet, have they noticed us, etc.
Nub, banner held high, you pass under the portcullis and say the passphrase. Nothing happens. You continue past the statues. Nothing happens.
Soar, you follow through the portfullis and say the passphrase. Nothing happens. You continue past the status. Nothing happens.
Nate, you follow through the portcullis and glance at the statues. Nothing happens. You step past them... and then there's a sudden, quiet sound of stone moving, just a little, a low, faintly audible, but continuous cracking sound.
Jalt, what are you doing?
(The wagon can probably see you, it's just moving very slowly.)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Yep, you have it right - Nate is under the assumption that only one of us would need to say the passphrase, therefore he has no desire to say those cursed words, and spits at the thought of saying them. He hasn't said them yet at all.
Once he hears the faint stone moving sounds, he looks around trying to see if he can notice what is moving and making the continuous cracking sound. He is not putting it together about the passphrase yet. If in fact that is what is going on here. Perception19
"Oh shit... the statues are moving. Is that normal?"
Honestly, if I am keeping in character, Nate still wouldn't say the passphrase. In his mind, since Nub had already said it with the banner, he is assuming they are good. He is not putting two and two together.
Nate will now hurry up and perhaps burst forward past the leader as he's frightened now by the statues moving.
Nate looks back at Soar. He has likely sped ahead past the statues now. He is probably a bit ahead, but just hears her shout-whisper. He yells back to her "what!? Didn't you guys already say it!? Ok, whatever. Tiamat, our Mother and Strength. Tiamat, our Mother and Strength. Tiamat, our Mother and Strength."
"Giant, you say?"
Nature: 16
(regarding the no response)
"Hmmm... maybe we should get a lil' closer and try again."
What Nub is describing seems a bit smaller than a giant. A troll maybe? You're really not sure.
Soar nods and walks forward holding the banner with Jalt and the others, ready to repeat the phrase again at 50 feet and then 20 feet.

Cool, so Soar, then Nate and Nub together, then Jalt.

The statues are beginning to move. The movement is slight at the moment. Is Nate continuing past them, or halting, or doing something else?
Anyone else want to do or say something?
"Oh shit... the statues are moving. Is that normal?"
