You see a large room. Hundreds of horse skulls are nailed to the ceiling and cover it entirely. Thick carpets cover the icy floor, and desks, chairs, and lecterns are everywhere, some covered with books and scrolls, others with potion vials, bits of meat and fur, and other things. Four hulking gargoyles stand frozen in the room.
In the centre of the room stand two human men, both notable for their shaved and tattooed heads and bright red robes. One you recognise as Azbara Jos, the ally of the cultists who travelled with your caravan for a short time and escaped Castle Naerytar with Rezmir. He frowns at the sight of you. The other figure you have not seen before; he is taller than his compatriot, but has a similar expression of disdain on his face as he regards you.
Azbara Jos speaks: Ah, the spies I mentioned, he says to the other. Servants of Bahamut perhaps, come to make trouble.

Soar's readied spell absolutely, 100% goes off right at Jos' head and she sprints forward right at Jos. (If she can get off a bonus action hex to target Jos beforehand, she will, but I'm guessing that's a little too sticky with readied actions and pre-initiative etc.)

Nate whispers yeah as he watches Soar burst forward like a bat out of hell. He's going to remain behind the wall outside of the room though for now, unseen, at least until initiative starts and/or he can get a better idea of the particulars of this large room, specifically if there might be something to hide behind given all of the tables, chairs, lecterns, etc. without Jos and his chum seeing as combat begins.
(Nate would've been positioned hugging the wall right beside the entrance to the room... kind of where Nub is. He was like this the first door we opened. So he would be considered unseen by the enemies so far then if he is there, right?)
(either way, so I don't hold things up, Nate would peek into the room, and launch a mote of fire with his hand, directly at Jos's face, with advantage if he is unseen. If not, it's totally fine! He'd then hug back onto the wall directly outside of the room.)

Nub is holding back a little on his big spells to see what the two suspected wizards will do. Pointing at the wounded Jos, he mutters the arcane words to cast Toll the Dead.
The Red Wizard cries out as the radiant blast hits him; it almost seems about to crack him open like an egg, as veins of radiant energy cover his skin, but he manages to stay intact.

Soar rushes forward, almost drawn to the glowing new red wizard, moth to flame. A bright blue light flashes from her sword, directly at the new wizard. (Bonus action: cast hex)
Talon then arcs up in a vicious sweep, pulsing with a familiar green divine light, and then loops back down in a chop, also glowing green.
Attack: 24 Damage: 14 plus 1 necrotic from hex, and plus 7 radiant from a first level divine smite
Extra Attack: 15 Damage: 13 plus 5 necrotic from hex, and plus 12 radiant from a first level divine smite
(She's dumping two smites, one on each attack, assuming they both hit. The hex from the BA casting also applies to both attacks. And she's using her charisma bonus to attack and damage, not strength, due to hex warrior.)
Soar's first attack slices into the unknown red wizard, and as the holy magic of Kelemvor flares, almost in competition with Jalt's ferocious attack, this time the holy energy fills the wizard and seems to consume him, glowing golden light, with a feint green tinge, erupts from cracks across his skin as the body falls to the floor. The unknown wizard is dead.
Soar, I assume you move your second attack to Jos? He casts Shield to deflect it though.
Round Two Jos Nate Nub Jalt Soar
Azbara Jos looks in horror and panic as the other wizard drops to the ground. He cries out in a loud voice: Assassins! Attack! Then he casts a spell and vanishes. You hear movement as someone invisible appears to be running away, out of the door.
OOC: Wow that poor wizard! Yes, she would move her second attack to Jos. Bummer about Shield, and invisibility. But since the attack doesn't hit, that second smite doesn't actually happen, so I'll take the spell slot back if that's okay with you. And I think I'd need to be able to see Jos to make an attack of opportunity on him, darn. Guessing we don't see footprints or misted breath from the cold? :)
(Yes, you didn't spend the second smite spell slot. No Attacks of Opportunity, no. You can attack invisible targets - I'll ask you to describe roughly where you think they are on the map, and therefore where you are attacking, and you'll make the attack at disadvantage, but they're not completely immune to being caught.)

Eldritch blast Attack: 21 Damage: 9
Eldritch blast Attack: 20 Damage: 4
"We've gotten good at trouble!" Her sword is eager to hit Jos when combat begins.
Nate whispers yeah as he watches Soar burst forward like a bat out of hell. Nate initiative when required: 9
Can I have initiative rolls for Soar, Jalt and Nub please? Then we'll resolve how this all plays out. :)
13
Hoard of the Dragon Queen - Jalt Rhogar - Dragonborn Cleric (9)
"Ive heard it both ways."
Soar initiative 19
I'll roll for Nub: 22
9 10
Soar's readied attack goes off, and a bolt of force energy slams into the more familiar Red Wizard.
(I believe that Eldritch Blast only allows two attacks when on your own turn, i.e. not as a readied action, so only the first hits.)
Round One:
Jos (surprised)
Nate
Other Red Wizard (surprised)
Nub
Jalt
Soar
Jos is surprised and takes no action. However, he does now (after his turn) have his reaction.
Nate is up.
(Nate would've been positioned hugging the wall right beside the entrance to the room... kind of where Nub is. He was like this the first door we opened. So he would be considered unseen by the enemies so far then if he is there, right?)
I guess I thought that casting the spell was one readied action, and the two beams are just part of that action:
From the spell: "The spell creates more than one beam when you reach higher levels: two beams at 5th level..."
Sage Advice says multiple beams can be part of a readied action:
https://rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/70498/can-you-eldritch-blast-as-a-readied-action-even-though-its-multiple-attacks
(either way, so I don't hold things up, Nate would peek into the room, and launch a mote of fire with his hand, directly at Jos's face, with advantage if he is unseen. If not, it's totally fine! He'd then hug back onto the wall directly outside of the room.)
Attack: 24 Damage: 7
Yes, Nate is unseen and would have advantage. The fire bolt slams into Jos's face, right on target.

Fair enough with Soar's attack, so both energy bolts hit.
The other red wizard is surprised and takes no action.
Nub is up.
Nub is holding back a little on his big spells to see what the two suspected wizards will do. Pointing at the wounded Jos, he mutters the arcane words to cast Toll the Dead.
WIS save: 6
The wizard takes 13 necrotic damage.
Jalt is up.
Jalt raises his hand and casts Guiding Bolt at lvl 3 for Attack: 18 Damage: 21
(wow... it was meant for the red wizard since I think Jalt sees him more clearly)
Hoard of the Dragon Queen - Jalt Rhogar - Dragonborn Cleric (9)
"Ive heard it both ways."
The Red Wizard cries out as the radiant blast hits him; it almost seems about to crack him open like an egg, as veins of radiant energy cover his skin, but he manages to stay intact.
Soar is up.
(Remember next roll on red wizard is with advantage)
Hoard of the Dragon Queen - Jalt Rhogar - Dragonborn Cleric (9)
"Ive heard it both ways."

Jos
Nate
