Hoard of the Dragon Queen - Jalt Rhogar - Dragonborn Cleric (9)
The guard glances at his superior, who shrugs and nods. There's One Foot in the Boat, down near the docks, that's where most adventurers stay, he replies. You are adventurers, right? He frowns at Jalt's dragon mask. You might want to take that off, sir. I'm sure you're not connected with this dragon cult, but some folks might take against you, looking like that. He returns his attention to Soar. Or there's the Pearl-Handled Pipe. Oldest and best inn in the city.
That's the river, sir, the guard replies. Head down to the docks, or out the west gate to cross the bridge.
Where are you spending the night? Will you choose one of the inns the guard recommends, or look for something else? In a city this size, there are probably many more options.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Soar thanks the guard and says with a smile that she supposes people who have been fighting the dragon cult for many months would be considered adventurers. So One Foot in the Boat it is!
She can’t quite shake old instincts so she tries to keep an eye out for anyone watching or following them, asking Jalt to help her watch other directions as well.
The common room of the One Foot in the Boat is packed and lively. There's music - a group of three musicians in one corner, and about fifty people in total. Perhaps half of them are gathered around a grizzled-looking man in his fifties, and as you enter you hear him telling his tale of defending a town against an attack by dragon cultists. As the tale goes on, it gets more and more fanciful; by the end, it appears the man fended off an attack by three actual dragons, single handed. He's not attempting to make it realistic, and the crowd isn't buying a word of it, but everyone seems in on the joke and enjoying the entertainment - he's a good storyteller.
Soar secures their packs in one of their rooms and asks if Nub wouldn’t mind setting up an alarm to alert them of anyone who comes in to take a look.
She comes back down to the common room and begins participating in the revelry, but over at a table in another corner. She’ll gamely laugh at the man’s jokes and oooh and ahhh when appropriate. There’s no reason to believe him but there’s not really any great reason to poke holes in the story, but she sincerely asks questions of him when she can. What color they were, how he got through their armor, if they cast spells, where their bodies lay, if the cultists fought too, how the cultists got the dragons there. If he’s telling the truth then she would love to learn from him! If he’s not, she wants to know what most people know about the cult and dragons, how much is common knowledge, what people think about them.
As she’s doing this and waiting for her meal and drink, she takes out the white dragon scales and begins really examining them, cleaning off any dirt or sinew or blood smears, trying to understand what it is she and Nate actually yanked off Glazhael. She’s not trying to conceal them - but she’s keeping them close and under her eye so they wouldn’t be snatched.
Nub agrees and casts the Alarm spell, and then retires to his own room.
Back in the common room, there's little that Soar can learn from this man and his absurd story. The details make no sense - the colours of the dragons shift as he recounts the same part in several different variations. He doesn't welcome questions as they interrupt his flow. However, you are able to discern that most people don't know much about the dragon cultists, other than that they have been attacking smaller settlements, but they haven't attacked Yartar itself yet - much discussion among the crowd is about whether they will or not.
The white dragon scales are what they appear to be - large, thick pieces of hide, as tough as metal, that might be fashioned into something else with the right skills and enough material. You clean them up, and they look impressive, preserving their white shade very well.
The common room begins to empty, and Soar and everyone get to their rooms. You wake in the morning having completed a long rest.
(Thought perhaps the people listening to the absurd story might see someone polishing real dragon scales and want to hear the real story, but no worries! Probably better for us that we fly below radar.)
Soar asks around, this being an adventurer's inn, for any recommendations of shops that might sell higher-end items of a magical nature. She'd love a bag of holding. She'll also chat with Jalt about anyone they should be checking in with. Their instructions are for tomorrow morning to be on that bridge, right? She'd go check out the bridge as well. Otherwise, we're just cooling our heels in Yartar for a day, right?
I don't think anyone would have recognised what the dragon scales were, perhaps.
The people at the inn indicate clearly that Waterdeep is the place to go for such things; though there is a single small shop in Yartar that has lower-end magical items, the discerning adventurer shops in the City of Spendours.
Soar, you find your way to the large stone bridge in the morning; it's busy, and clearly the route to the west is more travelled than to the east, at least at the moment. People come and go without paying you much attention, other than the guard at the gate who looks a little puzzled as you leave and then return so quickly, but otherwise asks no questions.
You do have a day in Yartar - is there anything in particular you would like to try to accomplish?
Soar will stop by the small shop to see what's there.
Other than that, I don't think we know anything about Yartar, and there aren'y strands to pull here? Soar wants to one day learn more about the pixies and the Feywild and her patron, but Yartar's not the place for that. So unless there's something else to do to contact allies, learn more about the cult, Soar will relax in the tavern after she shops.
With a whole day, you don't have any trouble finding 'The Crack'd Prism', and the gnome owner has a few magic items to sell, including several moon-touched weapons and a full set of Orb of Shielding, all types of orb. She has three common potions of healing to sell for 50 gold pieces each.
There is no official courier service, but Jalt could entrust a package to a trader who is planning to travel to the south - there's no-one in Yartar headed to Greenest, so it would depend on that person being willing to find another trader to carry it the rest of the way. This kind of mail is common in the Forgotten Realms; most packages do eventually reach their goal, but very slowly.
Alternatively, Jalt could simply hire someone to act as a courier, specifically to make a delivery on his behalf; that would cost 30 gold pieces to Greenest, as it would take the person several months to travel there and back.

"Ive heard it both ways."
Jalt, you get a response immediately from Leosin:
Barge and roads too slow. Council in two weeks. At sunrise day after tomorrow stand on bridge over Subrin and watch for my messenger bird.
Jalt opens his eyes and relays the message to Soar and Nub. I guess we will spend some time in this town.

Jalt is reluctant, and he's not sure why... but he takes the mask off. He shakes his head a bit, as if clearing his thoughts and thanks the guard.

(Just realized we dont know where Subrin is.. lol)
Jalt asks the guard about Subrin before they take off looking for a place to stay the night.
