Nub, you don't really get any sense of whether Borngray has been through here or not. Are you continuing to chase, down the ladder and towards the portal room?
Soar, you bump into Jalt and Nate as you return and you all head down the stairs together; you hear Nub up ahead, but do not catch up to him.
We keep going toward the portal room. Soar says, "so what are we doing? Chasing Borngray, but, I mean, after that, then what? Heading into the portal?"
You race towards the portal, uncertain of whether you are headed in the right direction or not.
Nub, you are first to the room next to the portal, and the mist swirls on the floor as you jump down from the ladder and begin the final stretch. Make a Perception check.
The rest of you are following, but some distance behind.
Nub, as you are coming up to the chamber housing the teleportation circle, you are certain that you hear a voice up ahead, someone speaking perhaps a little more loudly than they planned, out of fear perhaps. You don't catch the exact word, though. And when you make it into the chamber, it is completely empty. Whoever was here, they are gone.
About ten seconds later, Soar, Jalt and Nate all come barrelling into the room as well.
(If that perception roll had been one point lower, Nub wouldn't have heard even that!)
I'm guessing Soar Nate and Jalt don't see any evidence in the mist swirling around of someone's foot traffic as evidence of their passing ahead of them? Since Nub preceded them?
(I picture Soar stopping abruptly, skidding with her heels, and like Jalt running into Soar and then Nate running into Jalt as they barrel into the room. A little out of breath even. Almost like a cartoon.)
Nub says "I believe Borngray escaped. I heard a panicked voice from up here and when I got to the room it was empty. I didn't make out what was said and can't confirm it was their voice, but the most logical thing is that it was Borngray using the circle. I believe that we probably shouldn't face the three that escaped through the circle without a night's rest, but I'm happy to leave the decision up to the three of you. I have a single explosive-ball-of-fire I can throw at them, though the wizard that escaped probably also has one and some of you are looking a bit worse for wear."
"I could use some rest. It's been a very long day. Can we rest here with your rope trick? Do we want to set up in this room, to make sure no one sneaks around? I suppose we could try to check out the rest of the castle to ensure there's no one else in here."
Although you haven't fully explored the caves below the castle, you have cleared this area and the surrounding rooms. There's no guarantee of an uninterrupted rest, though.
Nate is sapped. He likes the idea of the rope trick and resting here. He'd also go with Soar to check out around the castle and unexplored caves below to ensure no one else might be around if it helps our chances of having a successful long rest.
"So is the plan to go into the circle, say the word, and go to where they went? Is there anything to prepare? Actually, let's go up to Borngray's room, look at his papers and his desk, and try to get a sense of what's going on here!"Soar does that, asking for as much help as possible, or eager to help someone a bit sharper than she is. (Vanilla rolls, hoping to add someone else's modifiers: 174)
I assume it's afternoonish? After looking through Borngray's papers and learning what they can, Soar would want to wander around a bit on the first floor and sit for, say, an hour in the doorway leading out to the main inner courtyard area, watching and listening for anything, eating some food, trying to get a sense of anyone still in the castle. Once that's done, it might be time for a long rest in the rope pocket dimension.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Nub lets the others know "We won't be able to sleep overnight in the dimension my rope spell creates, it is only good for a shorter rest. I am on board with staying here for the night. If we find a room with only one entrance and exit I can set up an alarm which will alert us to anyone approaching, though I suggest that we still take shifts to sleep. We may also want to prepare more than that and come back when we are fully prepared. I know I would be more effective against the other wizard if I had the chance to learn that spell that cancels another spell".
Nub definitely wants to check the room that they fought in for anything useful (investigation: 9 or best of that and 21 if someone is helping), though suggests that they first check the room to the right that was unexplored on the previous map. He will volunteer to go in first via the unopened yellow door on the map.

Nub survival: 11
Soar would head back toward the portal after not seeing anything near the exit.
Yes, Nub is heading toward the portal room as quickly as Tortleley possible (famous last words).
Assuming that Nate, Soar and Jalt saw Nub head down the ladder after the stairs, Nate would definitely follow Nub to the portal down the same ladder.
We keep going toward the portal room. Soar says, "so what are we doing? Chasing Borngray, but, I mean, after that, then what? Heading into the portal?"
"I have a feeling he is headed there to use it, so we might have to follow him." Nate looks wary as he says this.
You race towards the portal, uncertain of whether you are headed in the right direction or not.

Perception check for Nub: 10

No, the mist is always swirling a little; one or two people moving through it doesn't really disrupt the motion enough.
Nub says "I believe Borngray escaped. I heard a panicked voice from up here and when I got to the room it was empty. It's been totally quiet this far, right?

Jalt is on board for resting, either here or up in the castle.
