Rawk struggles through the first flight of stairs having to adjust her avian body to the design of the structure. By the second or third flight she develops a hybrid fluttering walk that allows her to skip a few awkward steps while keeping up with the spirit.
Rawk and Tempest notice that as they approach the wall, it seems to respond to Rawk's presence - a slight glow of the old and defaced paintwork. As Rawk reaches for it, the whole section of wall faintly lights up in a glow that shows off the abstract lines and geometric shapes that once adorned it. Then, it silently slides open revealing a short corridor beyond. The spirit would point to the floor, a look of caution on his face, and you would notice several pressure plates that, when you know about them, are easy to avoid.
The corridor opens up into another, much larger room carved into the rock simply but finely. The walls here are still in good condition, and though it is dark you see no evidence of the pervasive shadow. It has a hallowed feel to it, one tiny part of this city that resisted the Lingering Shadow's influence hidden away all these years.
The place is full of carved sarcophagus, each clearly depicting some important priests who once tended this place in life. The murals on the wall are full of life and colour, though a little faded. They alternate between geometric patterns, and scenes that clearly depicted the grove as it once was - a place full of lush life, a clear-as-crystal lake in the middle surrounded by tall, proud trees. Hopefully now, the Grove can return to this state one day.
The secret door has closed behind you, and you hear the very faint sounds of pursuit from beyond, though the slavers clearly have no idea of the doors existence. The spirit points to the floor near the middle of the chamber. A pathetic pile of bones lies there, the clothing mostly rotted away - though a very fine cloak adorned with strange-looking feathers seems intact.
For the first time in many days, you feel this is a place of safety where you can rest for a while if you wish.

"Agreed. Strange this cloak seems perfectly fine after all these years. Must be something special about it. Anyone want to try it on?" Tempest says holding up the cloak. He'll check on each of the group members inspecting their wounds then settle in with his back against one of the sarcophagus' and begin looking himself over.
Erro will look with wonder at this inner chamber, and spend some time admiring the art and how things used to be here before slumping down against the wall for a breather. Normally a room filled with sarcophagi would creep him out, but not after today.
Erro will handle the cloak inquisitively, somewhat wary of it. He’ll poke it, sniff it, and if nothing happens, he may try it on to see if anything happens. (He’d wait for anyone to try and identify it or Arcana check it first).
He’ll look at the skeleton on the floor and respectfully say, “Thanks for keeping this spot safe for us, mate. I hope that you weren’t trapped in this room.”
(Will use hit Dice, but I need to look up how many I had remaining)
As Erro comments on the corpse, the other three all see the spirit give him an almost-living look of exasperation that seems to say "What do you think?"
The rest passes peaceable, and the sounds of pursuit rapidly fades. After a while, the spirit vanishes, then appears once again. He points at the cloak, then gestures to you all, a clear 'please take it!'
He will then lead you out of the chamber, through the concealed door. The building is quiet, and peering through the window slits you can see the grove below, the column of clear, purified ground having already spread further. On the floor you see scattered bodies - perhaps a half dozen of the slavers, and near twice as many of what you assume (by the condition of the bodies) to have been zombies. Without the Lingering Shadow's control, once the zombies got moving they did what zombies do - and attacked the nearest living things.
The spirit leads you up, higher and higher until you arrive on the summit - recognisable from when you came in as the buildings you had seen before. From here you have a good vantage point to see the city. There is clearly some chaos, you can make out quite a crowd of what you assume are zombies around the pier, and the very faint sounds of battle reach to you as the slavers are trying to fight them off, while trying to evacuate to their main ship on the island.
The spirit looks at you all, gives one last nod, then fades, dissipating away.
The way back to safety lies ahead. Unless there is anything you want to do here, I'll assume you are able to traverse the sea again given you have plenty of time to prepare. Please then choose a navigator and they roll three survival checks for me, to see how quickly you are able to get home...
((The cloak is magical, I will hand over the item this weekend sometime - I keep changing my mind about what it does!))
((I'll aim to just wrap up when you get back to Dom-Sorn, and then hand over to Xtra - I'm due to start another home game soon, so please forgive if I am railroading you a bit to finish off - I've enjoyed the adventure, but I need to relinquish my DM stint :) ))
Once 8 Intelligence Erro makes the connection with the skeleton he frowns. He will have gathered the bones and put them to rest in one of the sarcophagi in the room.
Erro shakes his head observing the destruction of countrymen. They got what they deserved, but still, it didn’t have to be this way. One day, he thought to himself, he would put a final end to their practice.
Erro will leave navigating to Tempest and Rawk. He will attempt to sneak slightly ahead as before to help prevent them from running into trouble: Stealth: 12.
(If it is a Cloak of +1 to Dex Modifier I so call it, hahaha.)
((Bravo foofaspoon! I appreciate that you gave us such a good game. I never thought I would enjoy playing PBP format as much as I have. Still going a year come next week!))

Tempest will lead the way back across the sea and cliffs to the forest before asking for assistance from Rawk to guide them back to the village. Before departing he'd look back out to the grove and imagine seeing his father one last time ascending into the air. He knew he had to find his mother and he would do everything in his power to get her to the village safely but first he needed to reach the village and aid in destroying the yuan-ti. Perhaps his companions would join him in the hunt for his mother once the village was safe and the grove restored.

Ellis was so thankful that they were able to rest in that room, amazed by the art and such. He saw the cloak, but with how he already has this mantle on him, he would let the others have the cloak. Once they had rested, he followed the spirit and the others to the summit before the spirit vanished. Then he would also let Tempest and Rawk lead the way, doing the same as Erro by trying to be quiet and keep all of them out of trouble. Ellis thought about how he wanted to go back home, needing to stop the yuan-ti before he can do so.

Rawk looks out over the vast city, a bittersweet pang hits her in her chest and she exhales deeply. "We should get going. My father has probably lost half his feathers by now." she chirps. You can't really tell if she's joking or being serious. As they make their way back she'll try to keep her excitement down but the group would clearly be able to tell how happy she was by her constant fluttering about and cheerful mood.
((Thank you for the comments, glad you have enjoyed it. I found it rather tense as well - I'm to used to my home game level 10 party ROFL-stomping everything I send their way! Before you leave the crypt, you all watch Erro pick up the crumbling pile of bones, and with great effort open one of the sarcophagi. Inside is the mortal remains of some long-dead caretaker of the place, elegantly laid out in a final pose. Erro lays the bones next to it, having to pick up quite a lot of bits that scattered everywhere. It becomes a bit of a jumbled mess as everything gets tangled together, and Erro efforts to lay things out neatly seem to just make the whole picture more macabre. Eventually satisfied with this he pulls the lid back over again (though the rest of you are sure you hear the faint crack of bones as it pushes down on the now crowded interior. The spirit stands there watching this, open mouthed with astonishment.
When you all set off and leave, you cannot help but notice the spirit gives a definite glare at Erro's back as he leaves.
Tempest navigates well, the jungle seeming to be a lot safer on the way back. The shadows still persist, but no longer seem to move or dance, and Tempest can feel the unholy magic that caused them already leaking away, knowing it will not be long before nature rids itself of this infestation.
It takes only a couple of days to make it back to Dom-Gar, a relief to leave the shadow place behind and back into the normal hot and humid jungle full of dangerous predators. Though you have a couple of close shaves with some ferocious looking creatures - all bony armour and a great, club-like tail - you draw close to Dom-Gar.
You are intercepted by several scouts, who see your approach. They warn you to be careful - the diversion against the Yuan-ti was successful, but they are now returning in more force from the temple. They lead you back to the village in safety.
Once in, you are greeted by Chief Quirin, who is delighted by your story of victory.
"This is a great blow against the Yuan-ti! We were able to cause them some injury ourselves, though we have also lost people. We have withdrawn our force, as they have returned in greater numbers now. From what we can tell, as expected, Fenthasa has won their little civil war. Still, their numbers are depleted, and we have sent messengers to other villages of our people letting them know the Yuan-ti are weakened. Perhaps we can finally start pushing them back!"
He promises a great feast in your honour, but first leads you through to the center of the village. You catch sight of Darion and Daner in conversation, Darion looking a little singed around the edges. They give you a friendly wave.
Quirin nods at them "your friend Darion has helped repair our magical defences, and aided in several skirmishes with the Yuan-ti. I am told the dwarf killed a number of the Yuan-ti in single combat!"
However, you realise that most people's attention is on the center of the village. Elia is ministering to 5 individuals, who are resting on rough pallets in the central meeting place. One is clearly Jaron, and though she is diligent in attending to all of them, it is to Jaron she returns, clearly trying to hide huge worry.
Darion and Kanush come up. Darion nods towards them
"I think it was that poisoner you ran into, Ellis. In some skirmish just a few hours ago he threw down some evil-smelling vial. Those 5 caught the brunt of it, and Elia hasn't been able to stop whatever poison was in slowly killing them..."
Kanush looks anguished, though also thoughtful "Jaron and I, we've been friends - and rivals, since we were children. He was the greatest warrior - only Rawk here could match him in our generation, and I was always considered the best hunter. I've been blind I think."
He looks at Elia, so clearly distressed "It was always understood that the council would choose one of us to marry Elia - the ever present risk of annihilation means we get little choice in such things, if our people are to remain strong. I always thought it was just another competition," he glances over at you all concerned what you might think "don't get me wrong, I am hugely fond of Elia, we would have been a good match. But I think Jaron made the mistake of falling in love. Not the only one it seems."
He shakes his head "No wonder he has been so strange with me recently." you see the hunter suddenly look tearful too "For all his pride, he is still my closest friend. Neither he nor those other brave warriors deserve to die, especially to some foul poison..."
Elia sees you all, and rushes up, and for the first time the rest of the crowd seems to notice your return.
"It is good to see you all alive, but I must ask - do you still posses the potion I gave you? If you do please, could you return it... I may be able to save these warriors with it!"
((I think I know what you will do!! But final choice for you guys before I hand over - again apologies for the railroading :) ))
((oh, also I have placed the cloak in Erro's inventory, I wasn't sure who ended up with it! But feel free to move it around to whoever, it is a home brew 'Cloak of the Claw''))
Tempest was glad to see the village and the safe return of Darion and Daner. His eyes glaze over with tears that are both of sorrow and joy. The immense weight on his chest of the mission compiled with the realization of his father's fate and his mother's unknown fate. His self-centered thoughts are quickly checked as he sees the bodies of Jaron and the four others fighting for their lives. He shakes his head clearing his mind to focus on the task and hand and feels another sense of joy as he smiles, "We were fortunate enough not to have need of it." Tempest replies then turns to Ellis and gives a small nod of his approval.
(Foof- can you send me your dm notes so I have all the NPC names correct? Also give me the high sign or PM me when you want the cut-over to take place.)
Ellis was glad that they made it back to Dom-Gar, hearing that they have weakened the Yuan-ti, seeing Darion and Daner as he waved. He listened as they had encountered the poisoner he met at the temple, some of the people infected with a terrible poison. Then he heard Elia ask if they still have the potion, so glad that they hadn't used it and hearing Tempest as he nodded back. So Ellis then handed back over the potion to Elia, hoping that this will save them.
As the group approached Dom-Gar Rawk's excitement and mood would seep out more and more. Her occasional fluttering would turn into a near permanent flight between branches as she eagerly watch the group follow behind. When they met up with the scouting party and finally return to Dom-Gar she'd listen intently to all the war stories while retelling her own. She'd look over to Jaron and the others and agree with Tempest and Ellis to hand over the potion. A small flame of anger ignites within her at the thought of the yuan-ti killing and injuring some of her friends but she'd keep her emotions in check. Despite her lack of battle experience, at least outside some scouting or hunting missions, the journey they'd taken had given her more experience on the importance of teamwork and planning that most would receive in a lifetime. This would probably be a long war with many casualties, but if they worked together, perhaps they could come out victorious.
"Where's my father? Where's Kurrk?" she asks hoping to hear he's still locked away in their home awaiting her safe return.
(Awesome job foofaspoon! I really appreciate you and all the others allowing me to join this campaign!)
(Hilarious!) Erro, not noticing, would have continued on out of the crypt feeling quite proud of himself.
Erro was naturally elated as they saw the immediate effects of their good works, and he would have giddily marched through the jungle, freed the look upon the dinosaurs with wide-eyed wonder, feeling little fear compared with their last encounter.
Back in the village he would close his eyes, breathe in deeply smelling the scents of cooking spices and simple domestic life, and give a quick prayer of thankfulness.
When there is time, he would quickly seek out the old warrior that he shared drinks with earlier and swap some of his own recent stories from this last adventure. For now, he stands silent and respectfully, watching the drama with the potion unfold.
((Once again, bravo Foofaspoon! I very much appreciate you taking up the mantle and giving us a great game. I know it is a lot of work. Xtracrispy, I look forward to seeing what you come up with! Know that there is no pressure. Indeed, one of the funnest things about DM swapping is getting to experience different styles, so run the game that you would enjoy running! This last homebrew masterpiece was great, but I just adapted a single dungeon from a published adventure for mine and that was fun too.))

This last homebrew masterpiece was great, but I just adapted a single dungeon from a published adventure for mine and that was fun too.))
