While you converse Tempest chimes in, "Yes, the monsters beneath the water looked quite terrible and the opening may be partially collapsed. I was the last one through the small gap I think we could try the back entrance but it would be a risk." The horn sounds and you begin your march.
I need a survival check with advantage, a d12 and two perception checks.
You set out towards the temple with high spirits. The day is warm but a cluster of clouds keep the burning sun at bay for most of the day. Robyn, Rawk and Kurrk lead the way flying in and out of the canopy as they scout the best routes to take. At midday you stop for a short rest and eat some dried fruits and nuts to tide you over. The jungle is humid and still damp in low lying areas from the rain a few days ago. The soldiers seem to express a mix of excitement and anxiety but all share in the want of an end to this seemingly eternal conflict. You stand back to your feet and continue your march onward moving through the jungle with relative ease thanks to Erro and Rawk's help. During the afternoon Erro saves the group from some patches of quicksand that Rawk failed to spot from above. The danger averted and weather cooperating, you make excellent time. By the time you set up camp, you calculate you're within a day and a half of the temple if you continue at this (fast) pace.
I need: d8 roll for the night, d12 roll for the following day, two perception checks and a survival check with advantage.
Erro attends to the camp leaving watch for someone else, and he mingles about during the day. Perhaps this will be the last war march through the jungle. Despite the incoming battle, that did give him some confidence, though he was bracing for the inevitable atrocities he would witness behind the walls of the temple.
((all good. I’ve had a rough month. The start of school has already brought many plagues home))
Rawk will take a watch then snuggle in under her blanket for the remainder of the night. She was excited and her inner hatred for the yuan-ti made it a bit hard to fall asleep.
The sun sets after a long day's hike and you find it difficult to fall asleep as you near the temple. The strain from the day of marching eventually takes its toll and you find rest as the sounds of the jungle drown out everything else. Rawk, you see little out in the jungle and the insects seem to deaden any noises you may hear. You watch over, you find rest albeit a light slumber. The night passes and a cool gentle mist settles in around you. It is pleasant in the jungle heat but when you wake you find all your gear moist. Your clothes and armor stick to your skin and with the exception of Rawk, who's feathers flick away the moisture, you feel a tinge of bitterness to the start of your day. The humidity high and sweat already forming on your brow you eat a light breakfast and embark on the second day of marching. The first couple hours pass smoothly by while the hot sun bakes away the lingering mist.
The remainder of the days march is slow and arduous. The humidity causes everything to stick and wrinkle in the most annoying of places. You find yourself constantly adjusting your clothing for relief. The dampness has also created a few pot holes along the trail that Rawk and Erro miss. One of the wagons carrying supplies catches the pothole and gets stuck in the mud. After losing 15-20 minutes for the wagon you hear Robyn squawk a warning and you carefully but slowly maneuver around a patch of quicksand taking another stretch of time away from your march. You stop for lunch and a short rest under the shade of a mangrove forest and halfway through hear the cries of a few soldiers. You rush to see the cause of the disturbance and find they rested too close to a large colony of fire ants. You finish your short rest and continue your labored march through the jungle for a further 5 hours. As you crest a hill you catch glimpses of the distinct stone structures that make up the yuan-ti temple. Roughly 10-12 miles away and you see sporadic watch towers along the way. Rather than continuing forward you use the last hours of sunlight to attempt to dry your clothes as the humidity dissipates from the constant heat. You almost dread the though of the campfires but find them quite helpful at drying your clothes. A few of the green soldiers place their clothes too close tot eh flames and have to stamp out the embers that fall upon them before the burn up.
The thought of the coming battle and rough day deals a hit to morale that is felt among all and everyone looks forward to sleeping so that another day can come that is hopefully better than this one. As you finish the last steps of your tents and bedrolls you gladly take off your shoes and nurse your soggy feet.
I need a survival check, two perception checks, a d8 for the night and a d12 for the day.
After knowing how rough today was and seeing how morale had gotten low, Ellis will try to boost it back up before going to sleep and in the morning as well.
Darion sits around, grumbling to anyone who will listen about the jungle, spending most of the time casting prestidigitation keeping himself clean. Robyn sympathetically chirps, but makes sure she keeps watch.
Erro stoops to asking Darion for the occasional prestidigitation to help him stay clean, despite being somewhat worried about the possible side-effects. It was altogether miserable. He’d been in desert heat hot enough to scorch the flesh in minutes, but this humidity was something else entirely, and there was no way to mitigate it.
As the sun fades behind the distant hills the heat lingers into the night. Your exhausted bodies find a restless hot sleep. Sweat continues to bead up on your skin and you toss and turn for the first few hours. About midnight a cool breeze carries the heat away and you fall into a deeper slumber. Rawk is awakened for her watch and sees nothing. As her watch comes to close the coolness continues and she flutters back to her cot. You awake to find the a cooler jungle. Apparently at some point in the night a light rain came and went. The compost-like jungle floor is damp but still firm. Looking up to the sky you see a sea of light grey above you. You can see a large orange and yellow patch to the east signifying the location of the sun and thank the clouds for the cover from the heat. You smell the delicious scents of meat cooking and herbs and see many of the soldiers including yourselves have slept in longer than usual. You look around and find Faelar with a strange sort of grin on his face. He stands up on one of the carts and shouts out to the army group as soldiers begin to line up for food. "Eat up. Today we finish the fight the yuan-ti started many years ago. Today we reclaim our freedom." There's a small cheer from the crowd and the camp shifts from calm and smooth to an orderly, efficient, purpose driven camp. You eat and feel the refreshing savory flavors fill your stomachs.
At the expiration of an hour the camp is packed and the army group on the move towards the temple. Rawk, in her anxious excitement to reach the temple takes the army group on a near straight line towards the temple. This causes the army group to traverse a creek at its widest point and creates a bottleneck at a narrow pass down a dried up river bed. Still the army group progresses and thanks to Ellis and Robyns warnings, you avoid some of the traps the yuan-ti set out in the jungle. In an unfortunate series of events, two soldiers fall into a spike pit while trying to assist a cluster of soldiers who get tangled in a net trap similar to the one you found Erro in. These events all delay the army group's progress and chip away at the morale of the army. After 5 hours of marching the army group reaches the outskirts around the temple. The cloudy sky has kept you cool despite the arduous march and the soldiers still feel fresh. The scattered structures, that Darion and Ellis know are connected by underground tunnels and a teleportation network surround the large pyramid temple. Standing atop each is at least one sentry scouring the horizon for threats.
