Tempest coughs up blood as the shadow tenrdril pierces his body. He fights through the pain and continues the ritual. He looks out to the next tree and focuses on it but no beam of light appears to burn it. The strain from the damage was too much for his body to maintain his spell. Looking around to his allies he see Erro fall to the ground and shouts, "Hold." casting Healing Word on Erro healing him 4.
(Unfortunately all out of spell slots and Bardic Inspiration too. Just pray that Erro's next attack hits and brings it down!)
Ellis watches as the zombie got to him but didn't attack, preparing. But then he looked back, shocked as Tempest was engulfed by shadows and Erro looked to be barely standing. Damn it! He used up all his spells, having no way to magically help his friends. He has to be brave and take down this zombie himself then as he goes and attacks the zombie. Please hit!
Erro is brought low by the last psychic blast. A rivulet of blood pours from his nose and starts to issue forth from his eyes. The room was spinning and he couldn't hear anything through the pounding migraine. A rush of healing energy rushes through his body with Tempest's Healing Word, just enough to inspire him to stand back up. First onto one knee, and then to a shaky stand. He wipes his nose with his sleeve and then staggers towards the shadow snake for one final, desperate thrust with the rapier. This one must find purchase.
The Shadow still manages to hold on. Tempest you can feel that the threads that bind it to this plane are weak, and sense that finally destroying all the trees would make it significantly harder for the Shadow to resist. You are aware that time may be beginning to run out (given the parlous situation, take this as a strong DM hint). The seed is still going strong, but you can feel the magic slowly draining away. Also remember that you taught your companions how to do the ritual if you need to swap over...
Rawk, pressed against the door, you can see that though it is weakening, it is probably strong enough to hold for a little bit longer on it's own...
Erro, you drive home your attack at the Shadow-Serpent, but the ringing in your head throws off your aim at the last minute, missing it by a hair (you needed a 12 - one point off)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Rawk watches Erro fall and recover. She looks to the door and sees it hold fast now that she's braced it back into place a bit. She turns leaving the door and flies over to Erro's aid and attacks the serpent with all the fury she can muster. "Ellis, help Tempest. Erro and I will handle this one." she chirps.
As Erro curses his luck, the Shadow Serpent coils round to strike again, Erro bracing himself for a final attack. There is a sudden blur of feathers, and the glint of a metal blade sything through the shadow creature, and with a last howl the creature dissolves into emptiness, Rawk standing in it's place triumphant.
((phew))
Ellis weaves and dodges with the Vessel, and with a lunge hits home staggering the creature back.
You can feel the creature's confidence begin to return, and it's words ring in Tempest's head "Pathetic creature! For your insolence I shall make you watch each of your friends die - before adding you to my collection!"
For a moment the waters of the lake clear, and Tempest gets a view of the bottom - one covered with the corpses of the Lingering Shadow's sacrifices. Amongst them you briefly see the pale silhouettes of ghostly figures - the spirits of these poor creatures, each bound by tendrils of shadow. For a second, Tempest would clearly see his father's spectral form, looking straight at him. Strangely it smiles, and Tempest sees that he - and the other spirits - are themselves fighting against the bindings that hold them in place. You feel the sense of everything sitting at a tipping point. On one side lies success, the other failure and death with the balance yet to be decided.
Ellis suddenly feels the Shadows tighten around him (I will do the saving throw, because what happens next depends a lot on what happens here)
((your first bit of good luck this whole fight it feels!))
...but isn't quite able to get to it this round, digging away the ground in a feverish attempt to get to it, but Tempest had buried it well. However, it is seconds away from pulling the seed from the ground...
((Goodness sakes, not Ellis! This is some good D&D right here! Man I forget, did we pocket any of those Goodberries earlier??))
Erro closes his eyes and tenses up to absorb the final blow only to open them to see Rawk standing there, having just covered a great distance with her wings. “You beautiful bird I could kiss you!” He spurts out, overcome with thankfulness. The next thing he sees though is Ellis drop and the vessel start digging up the seed and then he is then overcome with horror. “Never!” he shouts. Bonus action to switch Hunter’s Mark to vessel.
Movement towards the vessel and assuming I can hit it:

Ellis was able to stagger the zombie back, but then felt the shadows tightening around him. He suddenly screamed and held his head in pain until there was nothing as he fell unconscious onto the ground.
((My theory is that D&D players are overall compliant with COVID-19 precautions despite the over 99% survival rate because we know precisely how unlucky one can be, lol))
(Yes everyone was given two good berries and ate one to sustain their hunger so everyone should have two left.)
Tempest looks down to his fallen comrade and calls to Rawk, “Rawk come quick and use the berry!” then turns and focuses his anger on the next tree casting Moonbeam on it and transforms into a Dire Wolf.
(advantage on attacks as long as your within 5 ft of me. )
