Faekin was in good hands and Professor would deduce anything deductible from the paintings and writings. Maxine went straight to the vials and Koro-arak himself. What he was doing was barbaric most primitive alchemy, but that was the thing she came to Chult for - the strange semi-magical secrets of old.
Shae, your healing light washes over Faekin as you cut him loose, and beyond the relief on his face, you see the light come back to his eyes a little, as he stumbles towards you.
Professor, the murals on the side of the chamber seem to depict some sort of mythological cicle: You can detect three panels on both sides of the hall, plus a large panel that is incomplete behind the altar. The first panel to the left depicts an eagle- headed deity fighting a snake creature, with the blood from the deity spilling into the ocean below and forming the continent of chult. The second panel to the left shows the same eagle-headed deity in company of a deity resembling a jaguar, who mix their own with either clay or corn to form the denizens of this culture. The third panel to the left is a depiction of a humanoid chief or priest, with an eagle-like headgear holding a ritual dagger and depicted as nourishing the gods with his own blood- a particular detail that stands out is the stocky and bearded nature of the humanoids, in comparison to the lithe anthropomorphic deities.
The first panel to the right depicts a scene of warfare, between the humanoids, and lizardlike creatures, topped with a depiction of the same battle immortalised as the struggle between the jaguar deity and a crocodile god. The second panel depicts the foundation of a city under the watchful eye of the eagle, the jaguar, and a third deity that seems to resemble either a monkey or a bat (unfortunately the wall at that point is cracked, and parts of the mural destroyed). The third panel depicts the same priest or chieftain as on the opposite ruling their empire, with a bladed club in one hand and a goblet of blood in the other. A large bat is depicted above the leader, either as a watchful presence or as a reminder of the inevitability of death.
The last panel behind the altar piece is unfinished, but it seems to have been planned as a collage-history of the empire that once ruled here, with the few finished scenes highlighting the city that once existed next to the lake, and a cataclysmic event, which you interpret as the eruption of a volcano bringing about an end to the empire. You're uncertain whether the cataclysmic event is a prediction or a record though.
Looking over the altar, it seems to be covered in mild wards and enchantments. The phrasing is often archaic and includes words or phrases that elude your understanding, but one repeated motif is that of sacrifice and of the give and take between deities and subjects. Several references are also made to the godly properties of "albanduermar" blood. You assume that the previous word is a term used by these people to refer to themselves.
Berrus, you find a few baubles such as glass marples and feather tokens used as jewlery or for status, as well as the sharp stone daggers and short bows of the grung. Inspecting the arrows you notice that they're covered in some kind of film, likely poisonous. Besides that, the bodies show signs of ritual scarring and some tattoos, though the meaning eludes you.
Maxine, looking over the vials and substances, you notice distilled water, lye, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur, and salt among the components, as well as copper, tin, iron, and gold filings in small stoppered vials. Though no notes or formulas exist for you to inspect, the mortar contains a mixture of gold, lye, and phosphorus, and you find the mixture applied on several patches of Koro-arak's skin. You assume that he attempted to colour his skin golden permanently, but telling from Koro-arak's body, the result was painful at best and possibly toxic. The bag of sand nearby and several scorch marks nearby give you an idea though: some of the components must have been combined into something highly flammable, which you might be able to reproduce.

Maxine was going through the vials, mumbling names of the reagents and her own thoughts about the purposes of the most exotic of them here (she counted everything here as trophies of war and simply pocketed everything remotely useful - you never know what can you need even in normal circumstances). One of the flasks that looked intact at first, fall in pieces in her hand. Maxine hissed in pain an licked the drop of blood from cut finger but immediately forgot about it, when spotted scorch marks. "Would you look at that! Not that barbaric after all." She dropped to her knees studying the ground still wet with the remnants of the flammable (read - useful) liquid. Even tasted it - hm, familiar composition...
Deep in her thoughts, Maxine absentmindedly traced one of the spots and then crossed it, "finishing the design", when the body of a clearly dead grung suddenly stood up with the blade, it used to cut it's own throat, readied to fight. Maxine's eyes widened: "It's alive! I mean - not dead! Un-dead!" (Not that it was anything new for these jungles, but so far did not get old either) "Kill it!" Girls shaky finger pointed at the altar and dead creature attacked not-so-innocent piece of rock. Then it dropped dead again.
Maxine touched the body with the tip of her boot, checked again if the throat was really cut (it was, the creature could not possibly be alive!) and put still bleeding cut finger back in her mouth thinking. Next half an hour she spent in experiments raising and dropping back dead bodies. There were no doubts - she, Maxine Rian, found a new form of magic! The very thing she was looking for! The very uncomfortable travel, the crash, the nightmarish run through the jungle - it was all worth it! She made her discovery!
"Gruk, how do you deal with the dead in your culture?" asks the Professor. "The priests and the elite guards deserve honor at the least for executing their duty as they saw fit," he adds.

Professors words returned Maxine to the material spheres - even by her (previous) standards she did not exactly honoured the dead here. To not further affect the fragile trust between travellers and grungs, she returned to vials (picking up empty too, by the way - she would need many!), quietly suggesting to close the cave behind and leave a big honourable tomb.
Shae would try to catch Faekin with her upper arm and coax him down to the floor slowly. She was bloodied and in rough shape herself, so she wouldn't be able to hold him up. Her magic reserves were all spent. Before she could rest, she would rely on the basics to get her through until it was safe to do so. It would be a bit of a tedious process, but the warlock would begin cleaning away dry blood and dirt from her hands quickly before tending to Faekin in more detail. She would offer him some water from her skin and focus on making sure he was comfortable as she inspected his wounds more closely. Tending to him also distracted her from her own wounds.
Once she was satisfied with Faekin's state, she would flag down the others one by one to assess how everyone was doing. This would allow Shae to prioritize her remaining supplies, if she had any, to who was most severe. Hopeful, she'd call out to Berrus and Maxine as they searched "Would you have found any medical supplies in your search?" She knew Berrus could use a little patching up. Maxine, on the other hand, didn't look to have suffered any physical damage, though the blood and dead body play had her a little concerned. I don't think I'm the crazy one any more...

Professor, you're Aware thatt Chult is a very old land, with a rich history, much of it unknown or unconfirmed. Though you're not entirely sure, the figures and the exquisite stonework seem to point to a highly advanced civilization of Chultan dwarves. Beyond their distant relatives still remaining on Chult, academic records see dwarven civilizations on Chult responsible for the foundation of several colonies, mines, and forges throughout the continent. Legends abound about the Forge of Hrakhamar, and many scholars think that the dwarves of Chult are responsible for the Firefingers, ancient signal towers to transmit messages across the vast distances of the jungle. Mezro, the ruined city, is known to have been built and once inhabited by a now long-dead civilization of dwarves. Beyond that though, there are many more places of legend in the jungles of Chult that point to even more mysterious origins.
You vaguely remember Berrus mentioning something about his forefathers once, maybe he might be more familiar with this than you, or might at least be able to provide some different insight.
