Falaine's spell eminates a mystical energy that seems to hold the two halves of the tabaxi guard in a state of suspension. While there's little hope this person can be revived, it will preserve any evidence of what's happened.
Paren stumbles to a stop, leaning heavily on his yklwa. "Oh it's just you all. That's good. I'm afraid our killer is on the way out of the castle. Now, I know this looks bad but I ask you all to trust me about what I'm going to say next. I did not do this, but I know who did, and I have more information about this war between the gods that we've been caught up in."

Falaine can tell that Paren is being truthful. The wound seems to be a rather significant slice into Paren's arm and could really use some healing before too much blood is loss. Looking at Paren's yklwa, you see that it appears to be clean of any fresh blood.
[OOC: All, I have added the past few Updates/Recaps/Lore Dumps I was able to find to the FIRST POST IN THE THREAD for everyone's convenience. Paren takes a moment to collect himself and then remembers that he's the healer in the group. He mutters a quick prayer and runs his other hand over his arm. ((Lay on Hands: 10 points of healing))

Jonathan sighs, "Don't we even get a single day without shenannigans?" He asks rhetorically as he follows Tanni down the hallway, stumbling into the scene.
(Passive Insight 10 if it matters for anything.)
After hearing Paren's words, Jonathan nods. "Well, what are you waiting for? Which way did they go?" He says, slightly annoyed and slightly wary about the situation. They have been in the duke's care for less than a day, and already involved in problematic scenarios. If this turns out bad and they are accused of slaying the guard, what will that do for him, or his family's name!?
(BTW, is it obvious that the ykwla isn't the murder weapon etc. I know the guard is pretty bloody, but may be pertinent to proving people's innocence later.)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Apparently not" Tanni grunts as they rush to the scene. She quickly looks over the scene and locks her gaze at Paren. "For your sake, I hope you're not lying." She takes a couple of steps past the corpse and asks, mirroring Jonathan. "Where did he run? We must catch that bastard!"
Insight check, if needed to see if Paren seems honest: 17
"Headed towards the teleporter, which I know how to control now by the way. We're not the first people to come here, that's why it took us where it did, it was just following the last set of instructions."

Jonathan doesn't draw his rapier yet. He thinks first about rushing back downstairs for his shield to properly be armed, but alas, there is not time. He nods to Paren and follows the route (if he can recall it) towards the teleportation chamber. If they run past any guards, he'll call on them to aid. If they run past a servant, he'll tell them to tell the guard to make to that cellar immediately.
You notice a few drops of blood that seems rather fresh and hasn't soaked into the stone flooring yet. It seems to lead down the stairs toward where the cellar was located.]
With urgency, the group moves to follow the killer at the direction of Paren. From what all can tell, Paren is being truthful in his words. Rushing down the stairs, you can hear a door somewhere on a floor above open into the staircase and the sound of leather footfalls slamming against the stone as guards descend.
The group swings open the door to the wine cellar and see the bright light of the teleportation runes pulse and then fade to nearly invisible. The stone obelisk base that makes up most of the ceiling in the room also glows with the same faint color before returning to its cold natural state.
In the rather tight quarters, there are three corpses of elvan mages that have been sliced nearly in half as well as one tabaxi guard that still had his weapon stored in the sheath at his side. Blood is splattered against the walls in large sweeping arcs mimicking what you all assume to be swings of a weapon. A cask of wine leaks its contents as a large portion of the barrel is charred from some sort of fire attack.
It seems the assailant has escaped through the portal and now your group is left with quite a mess on your hands.
The scorch marks here are most certainly the remnants of a fire bolt spell. The spell most likely originated from one of the nearby wizards attempting to stop their assailant. The barrel seems to have taken the full force of the attack and Paren is able to determine that either the barrel was the target or the original target was missed completely. The wine looks to have been spilled for quite some time as it soaks into the stone and has stopped spilling from the barrel.
"Blast, too late..." Jonathan utters under his breath. Whilst the group goes to check the room, Jonathan goes to wait outside the room to hail the guards when they arrive in an attempt to show them the "hey, we just got here" sort of thing. He doesn't want to be framed for any of this, at all.

Tanni rushes to the mages bodies, checking them quickly. They seem dead, but Tanni can't help herself from making sure. "Paren, you said you know how the circle works. We need to chase the bastard!"
All seem to have been cut down with a single slice of a blade. The accuracy and deadliness of the slash seems beyond anything the group has seen before. The cut hit as many vital weak points as possible causing the death to be nearly instant. The mages most likely didn't even feel pain in their death. The precision makes Tanni think whatever cut them down is highly focused and dedicated in their craft. She looks at the placement of the bodies and tries to imagine the scene that unfolded.
The first to fall was mostly the guard as their blade didn't even escape their side. Then, two of the mages nearly died at the same time; one after the other in a quick slash and a backhand slash from the same weapon. Hearing Paren say that one got a shot off, you can see that it is the one that was furthest from the circle with a small wooden wand in hand.
Tanni notices something strange about the wounds on the mages. It almost seems like frostbite around the openings. Using Tanni's experience with crafting weapons, she believes that the blade that was used is magical.
[Depending on what Paren does will dictate if he needs to roll against the insight check]

Paren looks up from the barrel. "One of the wizards got a spell off. Looks like he missed though."
