Paren slips into the hole with plenty of room to spare but not quite enough to stand so he crawls through on his stomach. The inside of this hole has clearly the same claw marks from the hyenas and you almost pity the animals as they clearly weren't the best choice for this task. There were plenty of other creatures that could have been used for borrowing but they must have been used as they were the most abundant.
You find yourself in a small underground space where you're finally able to stand. The space is no larger than ten feet by ten feet. In the darkness, the dark grey (darkvision) walls that surround you look freshly dug out and you wonder a bit where all the dirt had been placed that was here before. You reason that it was most likely deposited into the stream and washed away to hide that the hole had been here in the first place. It makes you question why the hole wasn't filled in afterwards.
You feel a sense of strange calm as the forces of life and death hang in the air like a thick cloud. You breathe in the cold subterranean air and feel at home here.
Falaine will climb down after Paren. As she enters her form will shift down in height until she feels comfortably far enough away from the ceiling, she'll then pull out a torch and light it with druidcraft. When she reaches Paren she will ask "What's going on?"
The torch illuminates the space and the shines of the earthen walls. The light also brings forth the color of the room within showing the red clay that makes up the walls. Falaine begins to look around the area as she breathes in the cold subterranean air.
Etched into the clay below your feet, you see magical runes in a large circular pattern. (Roll an Arcana Check) [A new feat has been added to your character sheer]
Paren looks around the small area that's now illuminated in light thanks to Falaine's spell and torch. The red clay that envelops you is startling at first given your instant thoughts of the same colored clay being found on the creatures. You begin to wonder if the creatures that attacked the gate of Holden Heights had something to do with this place here.
Tanni too climbs into the hole after others, not caring if her clothes get dirty. She looks around in the small space, pulls a glove off her right hand and runs her fingers across the clay walls.
Tanni sees that she is surrounded by red clay. When she looks to the left, there is a large space that's been dug out by some beasts using their claws. When she looks to her right, she notices the same. This whole hole looks to have been dug out by beasts with their claws.
Running her hand across the wall...
She feels the cold earth and clay run against her fingers leaving stains of red on her hands where she touches. The walls all seem solid with nothing hidden behind them. The clay is rather sticky. [Your character sheet has been updated with a new feat]
"Hey, don't just head in like that!" Jonathan lights his torch and goes to follow the others."At least bring some light so we can all see what's going on."
Jonathan follows and casts his torch around the space taking in the sights of the small dug out area. He seems that the red clay here has been scraped away by the claws of a beast that probably isn't that well suited for digging. With those gathered here in the small space, it's rather cramped but the cool subterranean air keeps it from getting hot.

[A new feat has been added to your character sheet]
The cold underground space is rather cramped. It wouldn't have made much use for anything and there doesn't seem to be anything of note here that would draw something to this place. But then Jonathan...
notices the runes that have been etched into the clay floor. While not a skilled practitioner of magic, he's seen similar runes in this particular circular shape before at the estates of fellow nobles that enjoyed traveling for work or pleasure. Yes, he was quite certain this was a teleportation circle and the runes were still fresh enough that it would perhaps function as an operational gate between other linked sites.
[Since you rolled a natural 20, where do you want this circle to lead???]
Arcana: 7 if she doesn't understand it, she will know who would given her sage background.
Falaine, once she sees the color of the clay will begin to scramble out. She'll run to the stream and strip off everything with the dirt on it and try to get as much off as possible. Scouring away skin if she must.
((Does the space reach up to the bottom of the obelisk?))
Those in the small room look above to see the footing of a large stone monument suspended above by some sort of divine magic. Paren would recognize that as most certainly the base of the obelisk that had fallen several days ago due to the flood. He then begins to wonder if the flood was an attempt to wash away the obelisk to hide the location of this exact space.
would understand the magic to be in the field of Conjuration and these runes are generally used to connect locations and allow instantaneous travel. She would know for certain that highly skilled wizards in major cities would be capable of this type of magic and would know how to use it.
(I was gonna say "use passive, not really checking", but RNG is a fickle mistress...)
"Careful, get off there." Jonathan tries to get the party away from the rune-etched markings. "You could perhaps open up a portal to who knows where. Honestly, that's why you check with some light."Jonathan isn't a practitioner of magic, so isn't sure how such things are triggered, he just knows that all of a sudden a large delivery of expensive goods could crush a servant if they were not careful when cleaning such locations.
That's a tough choice to chuck on me out of nowhere. How am I meant to know where the plot could lead?
Paren is able to reach above and touch the large stone that forms the base of the obelisk. He can feel a sort of magic pacing through him originating from his hand touching the obelisk and flowing all the way down his body and through his feet. The runes on the floor flair in a brilliant green light and all here can feel the energy begin to flow through them. It starts at their feet and rushes up through them like a hot stew on a cold evening. The sounds of shifting armor and weapons fade as silence falls over the group. You'd expect to hear your own breathing or the beating of your heart but there is nothing. The light of the runes pulses again in a nearly blinding eruption.
Suspending in the air, you can feel your weight free of the normal burden of reality. A bright green light shines around you making it impossible to make out your surroundings for the moment. You cast glances to one another trying to understand what could possibly be happening in this moment but all seem to be as surprised as you.
We have completed the Holden Heights portion of this campaign! I hope that you all enjoyed the first of many cities that we will build together. There will definitely be possibilities to return to HH but it will most likely have changed quite a lot by the time that happens. Hopefully you had some great and memorable interactions with the various townsfolk. It's a shame that we didn't get to say goodbye to some of the NPCs but I'm certain they will show up again later down the road. I'm looking forward to seeing how your impact on Holden Heights affects the rest of the region.
Please level your character up to level 5 and update your HP however you've been doing it thus far. Let me know if you have any questions!
