The tiefling finishes casting Prestidigitation on the group's clothing making sure to remove an left over clay that may be stuck anywhere. Jonathan notices that his cloak looks as new as the day he purchased it though a proper bath wouldn't hurt any of the group.
At Tanni's mention of voices, a confused expression washes over the tabaxi's face. "I think that you'll find the Duke's policies more than accommodating."
At Paren's request to see the sea, a smile spreads on the tabaxi's lips as he says, "Of course. If you would all follow me, I will escort you there. Please forgive our use of the servant passages but I see you're already comfortable with using them."
The tabaxi leads you through a doorway leading out of the kitchen. You enter another staircase similar to the one you were in earlier. You begin to wonder if all of these steps is how the castle received its name. After ascending several more levels and passing several closed and doors, you finally reach one that the tabaxi opens. Passing through the door and down a small service hallway, you finally are presented with the the grand hall. The guards each stand by a different door lead out of the hall.
The large open space has beautiful marble flooring and floor to ceiling mirrors on the right wall. On the left, where a wall would normally be, are open windows overlooking the Glimmering Sea. You're easily several hundred feet above the water at this point and the view is breathtaking. You watch as the sun catches the small waves on the sea giving it a slight glimmer. The hall is lacking in furniture making it a perfect place to host a ball. The domed ceiling has been painted with gorgeous paintings that tell the story of Thousand Steps. They seem to heavily focus on fishing.
As you step into the room you realize that a small detail of guards has followed you up the staircase to make sure there were no stranglers along the way. The guards all wear medium leather armor with short blades at each hip. They're also tabaxi and have coats of similar color and pattern to the tabaxi that escorted you. They all wear a similar necklace but it lacks the jewels.
"It is a great honor to have you hear with us today in the Hall of Mirrors," the tabaxi says. "My name is Tyler and I am responsible for keeping the Duke safe. You said that you were near Holden Heights when you found this teleportation circle. Can you elaborate on that for me? I need to make sure any connection to Thousand Steps has been properly vetted. You all look like you're a capable lot. I do hope you're not looking for any trouble here in the castle."
Falaine will answer. "We were in a grove that was dying despite the lush forest around it, we went into an earthen tunnel under the grove to investigate and it is there we saw the circle, but we reacted too late to its magics."
She seems much more confident in her elven disguise than when she is in her true form.
"The words they speak are true." Jonathan mentions, stepping forward now that he looks more presentable. He is glad that his nicer set of clothing is clean, but refrains from wearing a cloak inside; it is bad manners, after all to wear your outdoor wear indoors. He has also removed his travelling gloves, possibly a first for within the given company, to show he has an ornate signet ring upon his finger. "I vouch that these actions are what brought us unknowingly to your cellars, and it was not our intent to arrive unannounced, like some thieves in the night. Perhaps the duke has an arcanist who can analyse the markings and discover if that teleportation has been used in recent time beside ourselves, we would not want for folk to have arrived over the past seasons unnoticed." Jonathan gives a long bow, gentlemanly and polite; whilst adventuring has been a bit of fun and getting his cuffs soiled has been an interesting experience, grand halls and in the presence of the upper classes is something he is more comfortable with.
Paren stands staring out at the water. "Gods, there's so much water.... Might I ask, who is the prevailing god in these parts?" Falaine's voice seems to being his attention back to the room.

Tyler nods with interest as Falaine recounts what had happened. "That is most odd. This is the first time we've had visitors show up unannounced in this manner and I expect it to be the last time. I will have our Master of Magic examine this circle to see how it functions and why it has been placed there." Tyler nods at Jonathan's suggestion and then gestures toward one of the guards near a doorway. The salute and then move through the door, closing it behind them. "The gate will be sealed until we're able to better understand it. If we find that someone has been using a gate without authorization, the sentence will be swift."
Tyler looks to Paren and says, "We have no official religion at the castle if that's what you're asking. His Grace has demanded that we allow the townsfolk to form their own opinions on religion. If you're looking for somewhere to pray, I recommend on of the lower platforms overlooking the sea. There's a beauty and power in nature that always makes one feel small."
Paren nods and gives a small smile. "No. Thank you. That is alright, where we just came from is where I pray and I feel that what I did there will be enough for now. It has just been a confusing week and I wanted to know where we stood here."

Jonathan decides to keep his stride, though it standing a little separate from the rest of the group. They have been mentioning things that are personally appealing to them, like visiting the library, questioning religion, amongst other things. Jonathan thinks that given the scenario of they turned up unannounced in the Duke's keep, covered in disgusting material, and without a good reason that they cannot provide much evidence for, the best course of action is winning over the duke's favour before anything else. If the others are going to keep some self-centred goals and mentions, then he hopes he isn't put in with that lot for the time being. At least until they have a chance to speak to the duke, perhaps he can use his familial ties to keep them in good graces for now.
Finan keeps close to Jonathan after seeing that signet ring, and realizing they are in a castle. At least, closer than the others, with the man doing his best to keep his distance from everyone. The man had always been a bit of a snob, and this seems like the place where he might take his time to shine. Not that Finan is unfamiliar with rich people, it just happens that more often than not he only met them as he was being kicked out of of their lands.
Still, he can do a little something to avoid that fate this time. With a half-mumbled excuse he sets down his pack and starts digging around for the fake signet ring he keeps tucked away at the bottom somewhere. A slight smile crosses his face as he finds it and slips it on, then stands and tosses his pack to Paren. "Hold on to it for me, would you? Trust me, I'm doing you a favor." he says, struggling to keep the amused grin off his face.
Some time passes and you watch as small fishing vessels dock and deliver their bounty before heading back out to sea. Life seems to be much calmer here than in Holden Heights though you haven't seen much of the castle town that surrounds the Thousand Steps. A few servants come to the room and offer light hors d'oeuvres which are pleasant but not quite filling. Fresh water and tea are also offered to the group while they wait.
Tanni paces back and forth near the windows, glancing every now and then at the sea and the boats far below them. One hand is in her pocket, feeling the familiar bumps and grooves of the small statue she made so long ago.
Falaine can take a hint, for the remainder of the time she will be the Pinnacle of politeness and respect. Only speaking when spoken to, trying not to make eye contact.
Tyler smiles at Falaine's interest in the library. "Of course. His Grace's library is one of the finest on the coast. You could call him a collector but that may be an under appreciative term for what he's done in regards to the preservation of ancient tomes. Of course the library is only for his Grace and those that have his favor."
"If you'll excuse me," Tyler says with a slight bow. "His Grace will be joining you shortly."He then turns and exits out the same servant entrance you came through earlier. The sound of crashing waves against the shore provides a soft rumble even at these heights. The cool breeze blows in from the sea with a slight chill to it that people not familiar with coastal life might find a bit unpleasant.
You hear soft footsteps coming from the other side of a large set of heavy wooden doors. The doors swing open as two tabaxi guards dressed in rather fine leather armor enter the room. They carry similar short blades at their hips but the weapons are exceptionally nicer than those of the regular castle guards.
[All may roll a Perception check with DC:8 to read:]
These are certainly the Duke's personal guards. They are dressed both very stylishly and functionally. The weak spots in the armor are very few and you imagine that they may be there as a means of false assurance to anyone brazen enough to attack them.
[Tanni: Roll a smith's tools check (proficiency (3) + int (2)=+5): DC:10. If successful, you may read:]
The blades worn on the hips of the guards are very distinct in style. You recall working on similar designs back in the shop with Master Rorri. These seems to be an updated design using a metal that you're unfamiliar with. It looks like a standard metal but it ever so slightly shifts in color under the light from the windows.
Behind the two guards enters a middle aged half elf that's probably nearing 100 years old. His features are definitely more elvan than human, but his posture exhibits the more relaxed human elements. When he spots the group, he offers a genuine smile showing well tended teeth. The man has definitely taken care of himself and looks to be in prime physical shape despite his age.
"Welcome to Thousand Steps. I apologize for the delay. I hope you were able to enjoy the view while you waited." He looks out the large open windows taking in the fresh air and serenity of the horizon. "Lord Commander Tyler says that you teleported here by happenstance all the way from Holden Heights. Now, if we could understand how this worked, it would open up bountiful business opportunities. Holden Heights could have the freshest fish of any town in the southern Highlands. I've tasked my Master of Magic to study the room from which you came. I'll be honest. I haven't been in there for quite a long time. The servants seem to prefer I stay out of their passages and I respect those wishes. No one wants the boss to be around all the time."He laughs at the idea the servants can request such things.
"It will be studied and understood. I can guarantee you that. There isn't a way to see when it was used prior to your arrival as the runes are charged and depleted with each use according to my scholars. Tyler will be making sweeps of the castle with the guards to see if anyone is hiding where they shouldn't be. While I don't believe anyone would want to cause harm to Thousand Steps or myself, you can never be too careful. "
[All: Roll an insight check. DC: unknown]
The room seems exceptionally large to host a small private conversation. You wonder if you were taken here so that you can appreciate the view or admire the wealth of the Duke. Looking at the Duke he's dressed in very fine clothes as you'd expect of someone of his rank. He doesn't sport the gaudy jewelry you often see on people trying to overstate their worth. The simplicity of his style only makes him seem more empowered.
"As you are here mostly by accident, I will offer you each a room to stay in this evening until you get your bearings. If there is anything that you need, please let Candise know. She will be responsible for making sure that you're settled into your rooms and properly fed supper. I do ask that you not leave this wing of the castle until Tyler has been able to sweep the area for hidden threats. We will meet again in the morning for breakfast to discuss the findings on the teleportation circle. I'm sure you're as interested as I am in how it functions."
"I'm sure you have plenty of questions. I will do my best to answer them. I do have another meeting here soon so I can't be too terribly long, but I do wish to help you all if possible."
"You are most gracious, my Lord." Finan responds, flaunting the signet ring for a moment to ensure he is treated with the correct measure of respect. "As a way to repay your kindness, I admit to playing a bit when time allows. I am no professional of any kind, but I find most enjoy it when I, ah.. play the tunes, as they say. My man here carries my instruments." he says with an overly-friendly smile, gesturing at Paren behind him. "If you are free of any obligations, tonight, perhaps?"
He then bows slightly at their host, "I forget myself, apologies. Lord Caible Finain. A pleasure to meet you, Lord. Ah, Lord Jonathan, I am certain you wish to introduce yourself," he continues, only slightly mocking in his tone as he gestures for him to speak,"Please."
