Sickle looks to the crane. The 7 foot tall creature looks back at him. Its eyes watch him and he gets the distinct feeling of an intelligent creature observing him.  The look is not a kind one.

Silas looks down at the flowers, to the group he says, "These flowers are being cultivated on purpose.  They're soporifics."   Sedrik looks at him with a blank face and then makes a "what does that mean" expression.  Silas, "It means many of these flowers will make you sleepy. Don't breath too deeply around them." 

Badger sees the group has paused, and begins the first motions and incantations of a spell. 

Boris appears to be unmoving at this point while gazing towards the orchid. Almost as if in a stupor. His back seems arched forward and his head limply held up.

Waiting for action, or locked within a moment of inaction?

"Let's grab what we came for and try to quietly leave," Silas said as he looks for anything to cover his mouth and nose just in case.

The gardens are too thick to spot any of the orchids from here. It seems you will have to descend the stairs into the garden to search for the orchids.  That said, Silas covers his mouth and heads into the garden, followed by Azaka, Sickle and Mandra. It only takes them a couple of minutes following Sickle's direction before they spot several black orchids. They carefully pick a couple and leave the garden. Azaka, Sickle and Silas, even with mouths covered, feel a bit foggy when they wander from the garden. 

Boris stands there watching them, still not moving. 

The crane above leaps from its perch and flies away. 

Everyone looks around.  Sedrik, "You got it? That was easy."  Everyone gives him a dirty look, as you turn to head leave.  A shriek seems to issue from somewhere on the far side of the gardens. 

As you turn to begin walking back, one of the giant cranes comes swooping down and lands in the middle of the path. The air in between you and it begins to waver and explodes in a swirling pattern of lights, and then the lights are suddenly gone. 

Wisdom saves everyone please.  And then roll init.

Boris blinks as he turns around and starts moving to close the distance between him and the bird. He readies himself to charge the bird if it tries to fly off. 

He seems to be alert again as he cuts as direct of a path as possible.

Badger's foresight warned him of the crane's spell before it started, and he was ready with a defensive spell of his own. Unsure of the purpose of the bird-creature's attack, he attempted to subdue rather than harm it, and channeled all his earlier thoughts of foreboding back to the creature.

Cast Fear on Iblis. (DC 15, but replace WIS save roll with Portent of 4)

Boris, can you close the distance of 40 feet and attack in one turn?  If you can, make your attack.  If not, as you rush the bird creature it turns and flees, leaping into the air with a loud squawk of terror.  Another bird creature flaps and lands 40 feet to the north.  A magical light show fills the air in front of the group. 

Badger, Boris, Sickle, wisdom saving throws.  Sedrik's save : 19

Mandra, Azaka, Silas, and Ham all seem to be standing still, their eyes wide open, mouths agape, as if stupefied. 

Badger/Boris/Sickle, if you make a save vs DC 11, you may take your turn. 

Sedrik screeches and throws a dagger at the bird. Attack: 10 Damage: 5 

WIS save: 21

Convinced now that the creatures mean them harm, Badger casts a more aggressive spell, hoping to scare it off with a 'light show' of his own...
