Is DM Boba eccentric? - Single Choice
Ok, then I'll put something together for an Area of Effect damage dealer. Probably change to Evoker Wizard, and go straight Wizard for the build. Will redo my first post soon with the change in data. Will leave you open to go Diviner, Abjurer, or pretty much anything you want if you are looking to go Support/battlefield control.
I guess since I declared Cimeri Master Ziman's apprentice and charge, relationships are on me (not insisting, everything is discussable!).
DragonDenn, Cimeri lived in the house of Master Ziman practically all her life (I planned to make her 16 - a child indeed, so, she was with him for at least 11 years). Masters friends, who visited his house - like Flynn Fynestyll, sure know her, but for her they are "father's friends", "uncles/aunts". If Master Ziman helped Gotch and Taman, it well could be, that he recognized their potential and his personal inability to help in realization of that potential, so he would recommend them to the Temple/Academy and visit from time to time. He could take Cimeri with him from time to time, then they can know each other as well, but barely, those visits were not "play day for children".
Would it work?
Woogles, would Flynn be Ok to be called "uncle"? :) (not insisting the least!)
Papervolcano, with your characters Cimeri can be barely familiar, but Gotch/Taman should know you better?

As we have two wizards, a monk and me, I’m going to suggest I go with Scoria, so we have a tank, rather than leave all the frontline to Cimeri. Does that suit?
And we were so close to have a cleric as well! :)

yep that is a consideration. We would be minus a cleric. What do the players think? Here is my Evoker build:

Same sort of backstory...
Saralyssa was sponsored at the temple of Azuth in Baldur's Gate by the monk, who was her mentor. She would spend a lot of time at the monk's home outside of the city, discussing various matters with him. At the temple she would be a researcher and sage. She would have learned of her old friend's death and come to see if she could learn anything about what happened.
Works for me.
Sorry for making the wizard piece a bit complicated. I have three options now, with the Evoker Saralyssa my top choice. I would like to give the option for area of affect damage, which a support wizard would not be as good at. An evoker makes that a strength of our group.
The other two options are Taman, the diviner wizard (when he gets his next level) and with 1 level of cleric. Gives a bit of healing, but not much in that area, so not sure it is a big loss, though some is better than none. he would be battlefield control and utility though.
Gotch, the conjuration wizard. He would also be battlefield control, but would also do conjured items and creatures, so would help out with front-line bodies to help out in the combats. Might be a good option if we are lacking in front-line warriors to soak up damage in attacks.
My first choice is the evoker, but what does the group think?
Just to make it a little more complicated, I don’t mind going light or arcana cleric or as a Druid. Either way it can be control + healing which would balance out the evoker.
I suspect, everyone in the group would no mind classical formula Warrior/Rogue/Wizard/Cleric. Considering, this is ToA we are talking about (I know it only by reputation!) it was meant for the classics (there are puzzles, traps, a lot of deadly encounters). Any of us can play anything, I am sure. Yet, we all enjoy our concepts and there is certain charm in "all mages" party.
So, if you ask who will be more useful - cleric is better. But since I chose the most useless class - DD warrior, not even a tank - it's not my place to say anything to anyone. So, unless we are all willing to forfeit initial concepts and go classic, let's just play what we wanted to play, before DM loose patience and begun new recruitment :)

You have a point. After all of this discussion, I really would like to go back and just play the character I submitted. Taman. Sorry for the confusion started when I wanted to make sure we were not doubling up, but I will be playing a Cleric 1 Wizard X diviner wizard as we move forward. It was what I wanted to play in this and I think I'll just go back to that and let us move forward.
To the DM: Are we doing Point buy for abilities or do you want us to roll for those? I have my Taman character set up with Point Buy for now, but will modify if we are allowed to roll stats.
On the third hand - this is ToA. Barring remarkable luck, there’s every chance we’ll end up playing our backup characters. Play who you want and let the dice decide the rest.
I don’t have a pref for rolling vs point buy. So if you’ve all used the same method, or if you’re all fine with what you have, that suits me.
I put the narrative and fun before the rules, and I do have a good amount of patience so no worries about recruitment opening back up.
If you do not mind, I would go for the roll (usual here, re-roll ones once) and if result is "bad" - then point buy. Like this: Ability scores: 16 12 15 14 15 11
I'll keep them :)

Rolling is fun,: Ability scores: 17 15 13 10 8 16
Ability scores: 16 13 14 9 13 11
Please PM me if link is accurate and backstory accurate as well, and update your stats if needed. Some of you have suggestions from me; if you want something rewritten, please rewrite and submit.
@Papervolcano, do you want to roll stats or go w/ what you've got?

Taman's mentor, an elder of the temple of Azuth, who lived in a nearby village outside of Baldur's Gate, recently died. He traveled out of the city to see what he could learn on the death of the monk and found a young apprentice that the old monk had recently taken on.

Backstory: Cimeri was picked up from the street by Master Ziman (human monk) at a very young age (an act of kindness to a tiefling child), and brought to his house to eventually become an apprentice. They lived outside of BG's walls in a small village [South of the Outer City]- a simple life of learning and meditation. Master died recently protecting village from a sudden attack of opportunistic bandits. Villagers, that loved Master Ziman, were ready to collect the gold to raise him - alas, nowadays it is not possible. Cimeri would go to BG to search for help.

Local government scribe that worked to keep the records of Baldurs Gate and the smaller towns around. Flynn was in small town where his old friend Augustus Ziman was killed. Knowing all the his associate has left behind, Flynn plans to keep an eye on that young tiefling child [Cimeri] as he traveled back to report of the census and current events. [DM suggestion: Flynn returns to the temple and finds Scoria waiting in the antechamber of the Scriptorium; he passes on the news of Ziman's death, Scoria overhears, will follow up at Ziman's funeral.].
Scoria , Female Earth Genasi Barbarian:

An outlandish-looking outlander, Scoria came to Baldur’s Gate looking for answers around her Dao heritage. She’d found some leads with the Magisters of the Temple of Azuth, who have some knowledge of the magical planes and their peoples, but her contact recently died in suspicious circumstances. [DM suggestion: Temple of Azuth had asked her to wait for a response from Master Ziman; as she is checking in each day, Flynn returns w/ news of Ziman's death. Scoria will attend Ziman's funeral to learn more].
The suggestions make sense to me, and I figure I'm unlikely to get much more lucky with my stats than that array - if you're happy for me to keep them.

Alright! I believe I have what I need to begin, so I'll officially close this thread and set up 'Bobahendrix's ToA' as a Private game that y'all should join!
Can we get a link to the thread and the campaign?

I found it by going to the DM's name and looking at his threads. The link is here though.
