Moving stealthily through the undergrowth, you approach the scene. It looks like the horses didn’t manage to run far- whoever hit them clearly took them by surprise. As you move silently, your foot comes down next to a worked leather scroll case. With a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach, you recognise the case Gundren placed his map in only two days ago.
Debolsia climbs down from the wagon and watches as Amshoon makes his way to investigate the blockage. Her eyes scan the surrounding environment, not wanting to be jumped for a second time this soon.

Vinras looks to Debolsia with a raised eyebrow, "Uhhh... yeah I guess they are... though shoudn't we be looking out for the bandits, then at the plants?"
They look different- the bolts fired from the crossbows were shorter and fatter, with neatly trimmed feathers. They looked like they had been made in a bowyers’ workshop. These ones have a rougher appearance, and cobbles together out of whatever was available.
Easy enough. There is a trail hidden in the brush that heads north. It looks like someone has been using it for a while- you estimate around twelve sets of small footprints, and drag marks that indicate two bodies were brought this way.
Nicola swallows the pit of horror and feeling of being hunted, and tries to think of possible implications. She considers the possibility that Gundren said something to clue these attackers in that a larger party -- with a wagon full of supplies -- was on its way.
"We don't know what these bandits -- or whoever -- know about us. It looks like they number at least twice ours, which greatly concerns me. Do you think we should maybe go find help in Phandelin nearby? What about the supplies we're transporting? I think we should at least do our due diligence to make sure the wagon and supplies are safe and out of harm's way before we go after our patrons."
As she says this, Nicola looks around to see if there's a spot in the underbrush to tie up and hide the wagons.

She also mumbles a prayer for Guidance as she further considers the situation.

"Also," Nicola adds, anxiously wringing her hands, "how fresh are these tracks, anyway? What misfortune that we were waylaid on the road yesterday! These are dangerous parts, for sure." Memories of her entire party on the brink of death by the side of the road swirl into Nicola's head. She pushes them down, focusing back on the present problems.

Debolsia decides to follow at the others spot the tracks. Life always finds a way of making things more interesting and this could lead to potentially furthering her studies. She did her best to stay positive as they wandered away from their task. "We should be careful. Most people don't like to be snuck up on."
Looking around, you spot a bramble thicket that you think would work to conceal the horse and wagon. The state of the horses indicates they have been dead for a while, possibly dying early in the morning. The drag marks are also starting to get blurred in the rain. You estimate it’s been around 8-10 hours?
Amshoon sneaks closer to have a look at what happened.

Vallen would get out and stay with their wagon, ensuring that no one tries to sneak up on or steal the wagon.

You stare into the forest, trying to make out any signs of hostile creatures, but the foliage is too thick to see far.

Do the black fletched arrows look similar to the ones the bandits used?

"The plants are really nice here. They look healthy and full," Debolsia says to those around her.

"Well I don't see any bandits. Do you?," she asks as she refocuses her attention toward scene before her.

Amshoon will halt and give a low whisper. “This way.” Pointing out the tracks. “We can’t leave him.”

It looks like you have three options- follow the trail, continue on to town, or abandon the quest and see where the road takes you.
