"Now that is funny. I didn't think you had that in you Fiercespittle."Kei laughs out load at the scene before him. Having just reached the docks himself he watches as the sailors hair starts to grow its own marsh, he decides to add insult to injury and casts his own Prestidigitation, causing a musty, stagnant swamp water smell to waft out from the same sailor. "Jeez" he says in a louder than necessary voice "you'd think that these sailors have been swimming in the Hoolmarsh itself. Poowee". He waves his hand Infront of his grinning face. As the sailor walks away Kei gives Dwal a big wink.
The offending woman falls to her hand and knees, coughing and gasping as foul muck - accompanied by a potent stench – grows from her scalp. Some of her crewmates carry the sailor into the warehouse. Vertheg looks pained and uncomfortable. Wavechaser watches cooly from the office. Only the foreman cracks a small smile.
A sizable skiff ties up at the end of the busy wharf. A pair of dwarves in grey climb out. "Here we go," announces Vertheg, quietly. "Windrune's crew. Let's make this quick."
Simultaneously, one of Brinehald's young acolytes appears, a little sweaty and out of breath. "Good, you're still here. You ready?" Vertheg sighs with impatience.
Dwal turns and boards the ship if allowed. He will turn once he has boarded and watch the warehouse for a few moments. "I know that somethin' had to be done but, I think we 'aven't seen the last of 'em." he tells Gerrard. "Fortunately I carry most me gear wit' me, outside the books at the cottage."
"No no no no! Wait wait wait! The blessings of Procan require it," calls the young acolyte after Dwal. He pulls out a iron cup, some silver coins, a cooked chicken leg, and a bottle out of his sack. In his haste he drops half of it, then gathers them back up.
"Remember, Procan holds all treasures lost at sea as part of his domain," he intones "Procan curses those who plunder shipwrecks without the blessings of his agents, dogging their steps with wretched weather, misery, and loss. We will now make a sacrifice."
Answering the acolyte, Gerrard says, "Let's let Master Fenwader deal with the dwarves first, then we can get started."
Looking at the skiff with skepticism, Gerrard says, "Master Fenwader, I doubt your timbers will fit on that launch...I suppose we will need to ask them to bring the ship into port. Once you have that handled, could you perhaps join the acolytes and me by the wharf?"

Peri sidles up to the dwarves. "Ahoy there! We're your passengers, Aubrek's crew. I'm Periwinkle Fenwader -- just Peri -- and my companions here are Lord Gerrard Feldren of Seaton, and the renowned bard Kei. I know you dwarves can be particular about introductions, so I'll let Dwal introduce himself. We've got some additional cargo to take on, some tackle for refitting the Emperor if we can. We're all ready to board when you are."
As the acolyte arrives: "Ah, the blessing! We don't have a whole ship for you, but you can bless the mast. Then when we install it the blessing will transfer to the ship, right? I'm not sure how portable blessings are... Anyhow, as long as we stay on the Sea Lord's good side I'm happy."
Vertheg hustles ahead to have a quiet word with one of the dwarves on the wharf. A third dwarf remains on board the skiff, tidying up.
The other dwarf speaks with Dwal, "Ye' Aubreck's people? Ye' ready?"
Meanwhile Brinehald's acolyte begins a heavy-handed prayer. He scoops up a cup full of harbor water and pours it into Gerrard's boot. It is very cold.
You see the offending sailor and a couple of her buddies watching intently from the warehouse in the distance.
The sun peaks out of the clouds - a very rare sight in Saltmarsh. It is just past noon. A thin dusting of snow appears on the weeds on the margins of the waterfront complex.
You make out a large sailing ship anchored offshore - the Soul of Winter.
Solmar's people have a transport barge ready to launch, to deliver the timbers and gear to the ship.
Peri: As the acolyte arrives: "Ah, the blessing! We don't have a whole ship for you, but you can bless the mast. Then when we install it the blessing will transfer to the ship, right? I'm not sure how portable blessings are... Anyhow, as long as we stay on the Sea Lord's good side I'm happy."
The acolyte pauses his prayer to answer Peri's question. "Procan blesses people, not wood." Then he pours a second cup of icy harbor water onto Peri's foot and continues his prayer.
Vertheg hustles ahead to have a quiet word with one of the dwarves on the wharf. A third dwarf remains on board the skiff, tidying up.
The other dwarf speaks with Dwal, "Ye' Aubreck's people? Ye' ready?"
Dwal
"Aye" Dwal answers the dwarf. "Dwal of the Clan Fiercehammer, Smith and Mage. Who might you be? "Me companions want a blessing of the Human Sea God afore we go." he tells the dwarf.
"Aye" Dwal answers the dwarf. "Dwal of the Clan Fiercehammer, Smith and Mage. Who might you be? "Me companions want a blessing of the Human Sea God afore we go." he tells the dwarf.
"Oskar. Clan Shellgrim. First mate, Soul of Winter." He nods, understanding the blessing request without further question. "Got everything ye' need?"

Dwal
"I think we do. I fer one never traveled by boat till I got to this place so, I may not have everything but we'll see." Dwal replies. "Whose yer Captain an' what's the nature of yer crew?" he asks.
"C'mon lad" he shouts at the acolyte "we've got a boat to catch". He taps his boot impatiently waiting for his serve of holy water and chicken legs. He looks to the two wet footed party members. "I'm not cleaning your shoes this time. We're gonna need all the help we can get." While not a follower of Procan he knows first hand the power of the gods, he fully intends to walk around with a squelch in one boot if it has even a remote chance of aiding them in their mission.
The acolyte pours a cup of frigid water into both Kei's and Dwal's boots. Praying now in a sing-songy voice, he throws the chicken leg and the coins far out into the harbor, uncorks the bottle, and dumps the contents into the grey, oily waters. He concludes the prayers, then pauses and smiles. "Good luck! See you again." He nods at each of you and departs toward the street.
Oskar pauses respectfully for the conclusion of the ceremony, and then answers Dwal's question. "Captain Wolgar Windrune. We are coastal merchants. Repaying an old favor to Aubreck. Ye' ready?"
If you have no further business, the party is invited to board the skiff with Oskar and the pilot. Their companion is remaining in Saltmarsh.
Solmar's transport, a sizable barge equipped with a crane, and loaded with your timbers and supplies, will follow you shortly.
Gerrard moves over and talks with Oceanus for a few minutes in Elvish as it seems the sea elf is not coming along.
Elvish:
"I see you do not plan to join the rest of us. What will you do here? Are you going to visit your people or stay in town?" he asks of his fairly quiet companion, his unspoken question handing in the air--will Oceanus rejoin them or go his own way?

Dwal nods at Oskar's words as he boards. Dwal walks on shaky legs as he gets into the skiff and sits down as fast as possible once he boards.
Once on the main ship Dwal will board again a bit shaky and put himself out of the way of the dwarven sailors. Though Dwal dislikes boats of any type he takes some pride in being on a ship with a dwarven crew.
Oceanus sits on a piling and watches. He replies quietly to Gerrard in Elvish:
I shall join you. I'm not overly fond of dwarves, and my principal concern is now the Sahuagin threat, but it seems we have some time to bide. And we could make good use of the promised funds. I'd prefer not to partake in the Procan rituals. My gods will protect me.
He stands and follows you aboard.
Oskar and his crewmate welcome you onto the clean, orderly skiff, then each grab oars. "Goodbye to Saltmarsh," says Oskar.
In the distance, the foreman prepares to launch the transport with your supplies.
Unless you have other business ashore, you push off into the harbor, your destination the large sailing ship anchored well offshore.
The five of you make your way slowly out into the bay. Oskar is quiet; his crewman is a whistler. As you depart, you see the transport - carrying your massive timbers and other cargo - push off. In the distance you spot Wavechaser watching calmly from the wharf, his arms behind his back. The spitting sailor and her buddies also watch you depart, from the shelter of the warehouse door. Vertheg is nowhere to be seen, and the Procan acolyte has long departed.
The sun continues to shine a little, and you appreciate just how colorless Saltmarsh really is. But the water sparkles, and the bay is reasonably calm.
You soon approach the sailing ship, Soul of Winter, a 100-foot long, three-masted merchant vessel, equipped with a ballista and a mangonel. A rope ladder is waiting for you. Climbing aboard, you are greeted by the stout and stern captain, Wolgar Windrune.
Windrune makes a few polite and humorless introductory remarks. He also insists that you remain in your quarters below deck during the voyage, so as not to impede his crew.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Gerrard:
Looking at the dwarf in horror with the prospect of spending a full five days belowdecks, Gerrard asks, "Captain Windrune, surely there is a place abovedecks that we could occupy occasionally--perhaps at certain times of the day or night--that we could get some fresh air and still stay out of the way. I know this is not a pleasure cruise, but still I was looking forward to a fresh ocean breeze and a vast expanse of sea around me."
