"What can you tell us about this beast?" Dwal asks their guide in Draconic. "What do your people know about it and when was the last time your people faced the creature?"

Valignat whispers his reply to Dwal, in Draconic,
"It doesn't behave as a regular crocodile. It eats Lizardfolk. It can crush one in its mouth with a single bite. Is tail is also very dangerous."
Peri creeps, as silently as a ghost, to the edge of the pool. Quietly muttering a few arcane words, he begins to lift an old bone, covered in a foul brown jelly, out of the shallows of the pool.
Then something catches his eye from above – a pair of huge snakes, as thick as a man's leg, drop from the trees above. They aggressively advance upon Peri.

The snakes spring upon Peri.
Snake #1: Bite Attack: 26 Piercing damage: 6
Snake #2: Constrict Attack: 15 Bludgeoning damage: 17 and the target is grappled on a hit.
The first snake sinks its teeth deep into Peri's neck. Crit damage: 11 The second wraps itself around his torso. Peri is grappled (escape DC 16) and restrained.
Peri is unconscious, bleeding heavily from his neck.
Dwal, Kei, and Gerrard may act next. (Note: this hard-packed terrain is normal, not difficult.)

Dwal
Dwal will lash out with a spell. Witch Bolt at 3rd level by pulling out a twig that has been struck by lightning and speaking the arcane words., pointing the twig at Snake 1.
Dwal bridges an arc of crackling, blue energy with the snake currently constricting Peri's limp body, forming a sustained arc of lightning with it. It sears the snake, blackening its skin in areas, but does not kill the massive serpent. (Peri is not harmed by the lightning, but he is actively bleeding out from his wounds.) Nevertheless, the electric arc continues to do damage to the snake...
Gerrard rushes forward and slashes at Peri's captor, injuring it with the second swipe of his rapier. While wounded, the serpent continues to squeeze the hapless halfling.
Kei acts next.
And I was feeling pretty confident with that 26 Stealth!
(Peri was extremely stealthy. Unfortunately, he was already under surveillance, it seems.)
Watching as the life slips from Peri's unconcious body and Gerrard diving straight at the serpentine assailant, Kei reacts with a quick protection spell for Gerrard, hoping to help stave off any retaliatory attacks from the snake.
Following up with his own biting words for the snake that bit his small friend. "The Great Serpent seeks an audience with you. Do you hear his call?"

A subtle, shimmering field appears around Gerrard as Kei's abjuration takes effect. An invisible, sorrowful bell rings near the wounded snake. Wis Save: 5
The snake squirms momentarily in painful reaction. Bjorn files in and tries to sting Peri's attacker: Sting Attack: 17 Piercing damage: 4
The pseudodragon's stinger punctures the huge serpent's scales. It tries to shake off the little dragonoid's venom: Con Save: 7

...and succeeds. Oceanus steps up next. Holding his trident with both hands, he charges the snake: Trident Attack: 17 Piercing damage: 4
(Peri makes his first death save.)
Valignat dives into the fray as well, charging in with his morningstar and spiked shield: Morningstar Attack: 12 Piercing damage: 3 Spiked Shield Attack:17 Piercing damage: 4
But neither your lizardfolk guide nor your sea elf companion succeed in wounding it.
That's when something massive moves near the muddy mound at the center of the pool. A gigantic, crocodilian head rises from the water to stare at you, and the massive beast, which had been buried within the mound, begins to slide toward you through the foul water. Initiative: 16
Dwal, Kei, and Gerrard may act next. (Dwal and Kei are both concentrating on their spells; Dwal still has an electric arc connecting to the snake that may deal automatic damage as his action if he chooses. Gerrard has +2 AC. Peri is grappled, unconscious, and battling for his life, and Oceanus is wounded.)

Dwal
"The storm take ye beasty." Dwal says as he allows the current of lightning that is around the snake to strike the beast again doing:
Damage: 12
(I reread the spell and the initial damage is at the 3rd level which leads me to believe the damage after the 1st round, is the base damage described in the spell description.)
"Force that other 1 away from Peri so I can get to the lad." Dwal calls out as he tries to move around and position himself so he can get to Peri next turn.
"On it, Brother Fiercehammer," Gerrard responds. Maintaining his attack on the snake grappling Peri, Gerrard continues to stab at it rapidly. If he can kill the snake, he will push its carcass off Peri and towards the crocodile so that Dwal can get to his friend and perhaps the crocodile will have a snack to occupy him...
Bonus: Either use off hand to shove the snake away or continue attacking if it is not dead. Main Gauche: Attack: 22 Damage: 6
(If the snake is dead and/or off of Peri, Gerrard will move to stand protectively over the injured halfling, with the dead snake hopefully between him and the crocodile...)

Gerrard Feldren - Human Noble in Ghosts of Saltmarsh
Kerric Brightblade - Elven Warrior in "Apocalypse"
Dwal races around Gerrard to get to Peri (which arguably puts him closest to the croc, although away from the other snake - is that where you want to be?)
Gerrard manages to deliver a pair of serious wounds to Peri's captor with his rapier - the second manages to pierce its brain, killing it. It falls limp, dropping Peri into the soft earth. Gerrard kicks the massive serpent toward the advancing crocodile.
Kei may act next. He is ten feet from the uninjured snake, and still concentrating on Gerrard's magical shield.
There are tracks in the mud leading in all directions, but no sign of any crocodile in or around the pool.

(yeah. I am aware of his position. Just trying to get Dwal in a position to heal Peri)
