"Can you do anything to hide us from them?" Raven whispers to the tree as she spots the lights. She moves quietly to Dell, waking him silently and letting him know about the oncoming enemies.
Galathir sleepily lowers his branches to help screen you from your enemies. "You could climb up into my branches," he suggests in a very loud, rumbling whisper. "They do'nt like to look at me."

With Lord Q down, let 'em pass. Del whispers I reckon we can take 20 or so, all together, but not now. Let's save the fight for the ones we are chasing. Can you carry Squinty up our friend, Lord M? Or I could turn him invisible and we hide him, or turn any 2 of us invisible as a defensive surprise.
The band of gnolls seem headed for the swamp, and will not pass extremely close to your location if they stay more or less on a straight path. They are about 300 feet from you.
Apart from 30 or 40 gnolls, you see a farm wagon with some people on it, and tethered livestock being drawn in their wake--cows, horses, sheep, and even a few pigs. There are some bound elves running behind the wagon on a tether as well. You see a tall figure in a dark grey cloak and hood, with a longbow, running along with the pack, and a smaller, hunched figure in a black cloak carrying a staff sitting on the seat of the wagon.

Elwin continued snoring softly, oblivious to his surroundings, as he dreamed.
"Well," came the warlock's out-of-breath voice as he switched his spear grip. "Looks like I won't be learning any new magic tonight?"
"No," came the bland reply from the old man in tattered black robes floating in front of him in the dreamscape. "I've provided you an essential means of magical defense. It is now imperative to hone your raw fighting skill. When done, I shall expand your weapon capability, and you may even be able to learn a few spells on your own."
"Oh?" Elwin furrowed his brow. "I'd like that of course, but if you already had stronger spells you planned--"
He stopped as he noticed his patron suddenly turn his head to stare off into the starry expanse they were in.
"Something wrong?"
"Perhaps." The cold, dark figure turned back toward Elwin. "Training is over for now. You need to resume normal sleep."
With the sudden dismissal, the young man immediately found himself falling through the sky, his mind closing as he fell; he was fully asleep again by the time his spirit crashed back into his body.
40 gnolls, plus two unknowns - we'd need a lot of help. And Q not waking. Del whispers back And we need to rescue more than these. Attacking now we might lose these prisoners - let's follow and get all the prisoners at once. Unless.. Del considers, asking Galathir Could we get an army right now ? Or can we assemble one within a sunrise?

By now, Elwin had sat up, getting his bearings as the others spoke.
"My vote would be to go now," he said quietly. "If we follow them, there would be more prisoners... and more gnolls. No telling what we'd face.
"All we really need to do is free the prisoners, then hold the gnolls back long enough for them to escape. It's risky, I agree, but I think we can do it."
I don't like it, but....we could leave Q here with Galathir, and move up ahead to ambush. I turn M&R invisible for the first attack - get the cloaked ones. E and I attack at range. Then I can either do terrain or hypnotize a few - that's all my highest magic gone. If we are lucky we can get the prisoners freed. If lucky Q wakes up in time to help. Maybe M can try the satyr whistle and we get lucky with some allies. I smell a whole lotta "if" comin' offa this plan...
And what happens after we hold the gnolls off? Retreat to the fortress we do not have? Then regroup and do it all over with the rest of the prisoners and the rest of the gnolls when we find them?
"No, I think it is better we follow." Raven says with a sigh. "I don't like leaving them prisoner any longer than needed, but there is too many problems with fighting them now to make it worth the risk." She settles back, content to be silent and let the raiders move past with their prisoners.
Elwin nodded. They had no place to retreat to. And perhaps--just perhaps--the gnolls might leave the prisoners alone at their camp. Even nearly alone would be better odds.
"Very well," he whispered, as he got up into a crouch, summoned his longbow, and crept over to where Oroman stood to retrieve his arrows. He then merely knelt on a knee to watch the raiders.

Elwin's night vision, although longer range than the natural Darkvision of his companions, is obscured by the leaves surrounding him. If the gnolls were not carrying torches for the benefit of the draft horses pulling the wagon and the prisoners on foot, most of the party would see nothing.
Galathir only seems confused when Del asks him about gathering an army. He does not really understand what an army is, and when Del tries to explain, Galathir points at the gnolls and says, "But...then...there's one right there."
Del is also unable to figure out what's up with Quentin....he seems to be in a deep trance, perfectly normal and healthy, but completely unresponsive. ((If anyone has any desire to draw graffiti on a fellow party member's face, this would be the ideal moment.))
The gnoll caravan passes within about 80 feet of you, at the closest. Make a stealth roll...though the gnolls are busy watching prisoners and are surrounded by the noise of livestock, and the forest and Galathir offer plenty of concealment, there are some of them actually paying attention to their surroundings, and their vicious-looking hyenas pull on leashes, frustrated at not being allowed to tear at the livestock and prisoners, and clearly just longing for something to kill.
((If you follow, how far back do you intend to stay? And a separate stealth roll for that...))
