“Well we kept some kids from being recruited.” Raven says with a glare after the retreating pirates. She then turned back to the group. “That will only work for so long, until we scare them enough to do something about us.” She shrugs. “I think talking to the thief’s guild here might be worth a try. While the res tof you look into other items.” She glances around at the group. “Shall we move onto that avenue of research?”
"Sounds like a plan to me," said Elwin. "Something feels off though." He turned to Del and the others. "I think I'm going to follow those two; if I can get them alone, maybe I can... persuade them to spill their guts." He smiled. "There's plenty of narrow alleys and such in this part of town where we can have a quiet conversation. Don't worry, I won't get in over my head. I'll be back in a half hour at most."
(( Elwin's also interested in knowing what's going on with them. His winged boots are fully charged; he'll try to quickly find someplace discrete, fly up to a rooftop, then try to tail them without being spotted. He's hoping that he can either corner them alone, or that he will overhear something useful. Rolls that may be needed:
Raven would, naturally, be able to find the thieves' guild if she wants. As she looks around the market, noticing several likely hoodlums to question, she also notices a little shop, barely a shack-front that seems to have been crudely constructed over the mouth of an alley. A large sign says, "Drums of Gruumsh." Smaller signs promise, 'Talaveroth's largest collection of Orc drum sheet music! We have every rhythm pattern an orc bard could dream of! Death songs! Murder songs! Torture songs! Funeral songs! War songs! Threat songs! More death songs! Due to recent fire, partially burned sheets are discounted!" While quite a few shoppers are wandering the marketplace, this store seems to have no customers.
------
Elwin somehow manages to remain unobtrusive and follow the pirates. They don't go too far: they do not actually return immediately to their ship, but slip into one of the rowdy taverns. Slipping in after them, Elwin sees the hat-shopper pirate order someone else out of their chair so that he can sit beside a huge, brawny pirate with three gold teeth in front, who seems to be swilling ale by the pitcher. Smethens tries to order someone else out of a chair as well, but the drunken pirate refuses to be evicted, and Smethens ends up dragging him out. A fistfight begins, and over the cheering of the other pirates, you can't hear what the hat-shopping pirate is saying to Gold-Teeth. He leans forward, speaking urgently, and you assume he is speaking of the gang of ruffians who recently threatened them and chased off his child recruits.
Gold-teeth waves him away, and his loud bellows can be heard even over the ruckus. "Bah, Jacaranda! So they chased off a handful of your squibs. There's plenty more where they came from, and you've made enough commissions already this month. Let some of the others catch up, before they get surly enough to poison your ale!"
The hat-shopper, Jacaranda, looks annoyed, and carries on speaking. Gold-Teeth bursts out laughing. "Dangerous, my barnacled backflap! If you're spooked by a few scurvy landlubbers, take some of the mates along with ye the next time you go fishing for sprats. Or call out the city watch, if you've got no stomach for a fight. I'll not trouble the captain with your nonsense. Ain't we got the whole town licking our boots? Ain't we got the nobs shivering in terror and grovelling for our mercy? Ain't we got the city watch treatin' us like lords and Aknot's ogre brutes backin' us up and that grey elf lurkin' around looking...for...hmmm. Wha'd you say these pikers looked like?" He tosses down another pitcher of ale, as Smethens finally knocks out the drunken pirate and steals his chair.

He'd heard enough. Besides, it didn't seem like the pirates were keen to leave any time soon.
Slipping back out of the tavern, Elwin made his way back to the others. "Might want to hold off on seeing the council, Quentin. It seems these pirates have the entire city in their pocket." He then relayed what he'd overheard in detail.
He shook his head. "This is worse than I thought. Right now I'm wanting to take out each and every one of these hoodlums. But Del's right... can't just go attack the ships when kids are still on them. Hmmm."
The shack is mostly bare except for thousands of knotted rawhide strings hanging down from the rafters. Through the curtains of rawhide, Raven can see a counter with a goblin sitting behind it, knitting. "Raven, taakhaal! Fancy meeting you here," says the voice of Tagec.

Well, we found Tagrec anyway, he's always good for intel. Thank you Sir Elwin, that intel is helpful. I'm wondering whether the Watch would grow some spine if they knew they had us, if the Council might turn if some heroic folk confronted them. I also remember that both City Watch and private security have been purged - meaning there ought to be a bunch of unemployed fighters in town we might be able to raise an army from. I wish the hags had left some clues behind that we coulda helped the ogrelings - would be nice to have some way to get the ogres over to our side.
Let's talk to Tagrec, see if he has any clue (1) whether the Watch and Council are all corrupt or merely cowed (b) anything about Greyelf being around (iii) any pull with the ogres, maybe because Huarc, or other backup
Depending on the answers, maybe Q and Del go confront the council; E & M get the kids to collect all the ex-watchmen or whoever can fight, and raise the resistance; R & FB figure out where Greyelf is. Shoulda picked a sneakier squire, sister, so yer boy little E could be of use.
(edit) which Raven already started on while I was typing. Great minds...))
Quentin smiles and asks Del, "Could you lead me to the Council's meeting hall? I'm afraid if I get lost I'll be covering in horse droppings within moments."
"Tagec, should I just expect you to be wherever I go?" Raven asks, moving over to lean on the counter. She leans her hip against it as she keeps an eye on her surroundings. "Have you heard anything of this assassin that is hunting us?" She asks the main question on her mind. "I know he is around here somewhere, but have not spotted him yet."
I will, Lord Quentin, and I want to go too, but lets get Tagrec's best info on the council and city watch so we are armed for the confrontation.
Del will want to hear what our goblin friend thinks about corruption vs cowed in the watch and council and any other info that will help us raise forces against the haggis of evil

(Del would know that council meetings happen in the evenings: no point in going there just yet, unless you're hoping to catch an individual Councillor or two hanging around for some bureaucratic purpose. You could either hunt one down at his/her home or place of business, or arrive at the hall an hour or so before the meeting starts to find more of them, or show up at the meeting hoping they will let you in and slot you into the agenda...you may need one of the Councillors to sponsor you for that, unless you are planning to force or trick your way in. It might be worth asking Sister Almara which ones would be worth approaching.)

"Oh, you know, I have lots of businesses all over the place, and they all need a little looking after from time to time," Tagec says to Raven. "Word is that your grey friend has his hands a bit full. You've thrown somebody's schedule into a mess, and Raninon's having to pick up the slack of other hag lieutenants who are no longer available to carry out their duties. He's been seen acting as emissary between the Red Sails company and the pirates. He has a lot of respect among pirates.
