"As Gruumsh once yelled out, 'Gnome, stop this crazy thing!'" Ketch calls out, stepping up and swinging his war hammer at the contraption, trying to destroy it and bring the nutty gnome tumbling down.
((Attack 22 and Damage 6))
And as a War Priest Ketch will take advantage of his divinity and make a second attack as a bonus action, also against the contraption.
((Attack 4 and Damage 9))
(Should have saved bonus action, but at least the first attack was a critical)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Chom gasps in awe at the contraption, and then notices the wild-eyed gnome perched on it. "My dear friend, you look like you've been up all night and day waiting to test this contraption, and by the sounds of it, it works exceedingly well! Perhaps you should should get some Sleep, and we can discuss it once your feeling a little less grumpy?" The wizard pulls a few bits and bobs from a pouch at his waist, mashes them together, and blows the mixture in the direction of the gnome.
Xel-Thoth is amazed at the contraption he sees, even if it is being used to to try to kill him.
Seeing his companions act, trying to either destroy the machine or incapacitate the gnome, he hopes he can buy them more time.
Grasping his staff, Xel-Thoth casts "Minor Illusion" and creates a small box to encase the gnome. After he casts the spell he uses his movement to go to the best place to get some cover from the crossbow machine.
[DM - I am hoping that the box can fully cover the gnome so that it blocks his line of sight to everyone. I am thinking he is the one aiming the contraption at us.]
Seeing his companions leap into action, calls forward a pulsating hum that John could feel right behind his eyeballs. Like the sound of a distant war drum, the pulse fills John's brain as he goes into a rage!
Standing 6'9 he surges forward, grabbing hold of the forward crossbow he attempts to rip the entire contraption from its base, pilots seat and all!
Ketch rushes forward and swings at the contraption, making it shake and the gnome shriek. It drives the crossbow downward, but might still be workable.
Xel-Thoth takes his staff and a box appears around the gnome, causing her to swear in Gnomish. But as he starts to move to the side, he feels a strange tingling on his back. A strange draft hits him from behind and suddenly his feet aren't on the ground. He looks over his shoulder and sees that a giant set of butterfly wings have sprung from his back. ((You now have a flying speed of 30 feet for the next hour or you can magic the wings away))
The crossbows spin suddenly to the right and a new one is now pointed at Ketch. It fires.
Seeing the opportunity arise, Erevan uses Druidcraft to cause the musky odour of a skunk to fill the illusionary box surrounding the gnome, hoping to drive him away from the controls of his contraption.
Erevan casts the cantrip, and hears the gnome begin to sneeze. As he draws his hand back after casting the spell, he notices that it is a vibrant blue. He looks at his other hand and sees that it is the same shade of blue.
John grabs hold of the crossbow and tries to rip it from the cave floor. He thinks he feels it move, but it remains in place. ((This would be more a regular Strength than Athletics (Athletics being more about movement or endurance) Since I didn't mention it was bolted to the floor, will make it be a straight roll. 9 being the first roll, keeping it but adding only 3, not 5))
Chom casts his spell, and you hear a huge yawn amidst the sneezing. Then a faint sound and nothing. John also starts to yawn and his eyes half close as he leans against the now still contraption. Chom, you see tiny points of light appear before your eyes and the room gets brighter. You blink, look harder, and realize the lights are centered on you, and only the area around you is different. The light extends for ten feet in a complete circle around you, then grows dimmer for another ten feet out.
"Such wonderful magic! I would never have thought to greet my guests with a pair of butterfly wings! Or lights to guide their way! Perhaps they have ran out of candles?" Chom beams from ear to ear as he observes the different effects affecting everyone.
He responds to Xel-Thoth by unslinging his backpack from his shoulders, and producing a length of sturdy rope, which he hands to the human. "My good sir! A gnome is never without a sturdy length of rope, a very useful thing, oh yes! Perhaps we could lash him to one of our sturdier companions? It wouldn't do to leave him here as we head inside, asleep in charge of this wonderful contraption! He may set it off accidentally and hit someone! The horror! I can only imagine his shame if he woke up to find he had downed a bird in flight as he slept! Horace! Do be careful, we don't want you getting shot!"
((The answer is on the tip of your tongue, but you can't quite find it))
You slide the gnome off the contraption and tie her up. Now what do you do? There was the passage way opposite of the one that brought you to this room. And there is a door beyond the crossbows.
Shaking his head and rubbing sleep out of his eyes, John pushes himself upright from the rotating crossbow mechanism. As the others finish tying up the Gnome, he steps forward, scooping her up.
"And if we bring her, maybe she'll wake up and decide to talk to us?"
Shrugging, he cradles the tiny load under his left arm, and starts forwards through the door beyond the contraption.
Asvyou open the door the sound of the waterfall gets louder. The tunnel curves to the right and soon you see one of the openings that opened put to the canyon. But the passage also continues in front of you.
You go 15 feet and make another turn. Another 15 feet there is a closed door on your right. Yet another 15 feet straight ahead is another closed door.
John pauses a moment to consider both doors. Anxious to press on, and feel as though they were making progress. He chooses to continue straight ahead to the last door.
"Hello?" He calls out as he tries the door, still carrying the female Gnome like a loaf of bread.
((Before moving forward, Ketch would at least try to unload the bolts from the contraption and see just how many bolts there were, with an eye towards breaking or confiscating them. Never a good idea to leave weapons behind your back...))
The door opens and you see barrels in wide alcoves to thr left, right, and ahead of you. There are four on each side and the ones to your right have spigots in thrm.
"See!" Chom exclaims. "I told you there was a party! Now I do feel guilty for not bringing a present! And we have no tankards to taste from these barrels! Perhaps they will provide tankards for us? Hello! Hello?" He walks up to the nearest barrel, and raps on it a few times to determine the level of liquid in it.
Shielding his eyes against Chom's twinkling lights with his free hand. John walks as far into the room as he can to allow room for everyone. Gently he balances the sleeping gnomes body over one of the barrels at the back of the room. The way he'd strap a carcass on the back of a horse.
"Why are you twinkling?" He asks to Chom, as he turns his attention from their captive, back to his companions. "And he's blue, and he is flying!" He stated more than actually asked, pointing to Erevan and Xel-Thoth in turn. Too many things are happening that he's unsure of, and he's visibly frustrated.
"I'm sure Mother would say it's rude. But...I'll have that drink with or without a tankard." John mumbles as he walks over to one of the barrels with a spigot. Cupping one hand under the spout, he slowly turns the spigot with the other, allowing a gentle trickle to fill up enough for a gulp.
Everyone shoot me your attacks and I'll do the juggling.

Let me know if this works -

Erevan, you're up.
Erevan
Seeing the opportunity arise, Erevan uses Druidcraft to cause the musky odour of a skunk to fill the illusionary box surrounding the gnome, hoping to drive him away from the controls of his contraption.
(Sorry, the tooltip wouldn't work for the spell)
"ARGH!" Ketch says, more shocked by the scratch than pained. Still, he is quite angered... and swings his War mace at the contraption again.
Attack: 9. Damage: 8

DM: Can Xel-Thoth figure out what caused the fairy wings to sprout (and the other various magic stuff which is happening).
Arcana Check: 6
Xel-Thoth hears that Chom's Sleep spell was very effective. He removes the illusion he created around the Gnome.
"Can someone remove him from the controls. And be careful not to wake him or else he might start shooting us again. Do you have any rope to bind him?"
"Such wonderful magic! I would never have thought to greet my guests with a pair of butterfly wings! Or lights to guide their way! Perhaps they have ran out of candles?" Chom beams from ear to ear as he observes the different effects affecting everyone.

Chom, the one you tap sounds rather hollow.
John, the trickle very quickly turns into a few drops.
