Looking over toward his companions he says "Should we be wary?"
Rush doesn't see any signs of danger nearby. The alcove seems peaceful, honestly. There are no obvious signs of any defensive measures to keep outsiders out, or anything like that.
Kwiz uses mage hand to pick a mushroom. The one he grabbed was red. When his ethereal hand brought it back to him, Kwiz noticed that it has an oily texture to it and it smells ever so slightly like...kerosine?
As he sniffs it he immediately pulls back saying "That's not the normal smell of a mushroom... There was a great chef back at the Library... Made this great roast mushroom... but I digress. Let's see if my nose deceives me."Finishing his thought he sends the hand a few feet away, still holding the mushroom, and snaps his fingers as a small spark appears just beneath the cap of the mushroom.
The mushroom starts to smoke and a small portion of it catches the spark, but it quickly goes out. It could be that there is so much moisture in the air from the waterfall that it didn't actually catch. It could also be that it's the oils on or in the mushroom that smell flammable, but not the meat of the mushroom itself.
((Can we retcon that Willem has been with us since town? Makes more sense for the narrative than suddenly magically appearing at the cave entrance imho))
Hearing the half-elf behind him Kwisatz says "Well, that was the theory Willem... though it clearly didn't work... not too much fire here. Perhaps the cave is just to moist. Or perhaps e could extract the oil from them?! So many possibilities! I wonder what else..." and starts to trail off as he begins to absent mindedly walk in the cave.
Obviously, feel free to explore around as you see fit. The two outcroppings that are 20' - 30' tall are pretty sheer cliffs, and if it weren't for the switchback path leading to what looks like the actual entrance to the cave system across the stream from where the party started, that would even have been a pretty steep 20' - 30' climb. But, the path looks fairly well worn and potentially even intentionally created or at least intentionally modified for foot traffic.
Letting out a small silent chuckle at the gnome, he might actually begin to like this little fellow, "I'm always wary. Willem, lets see what is up here". Stepping past the gnome Oban makes his way up the switch back
You wind your way back and forth on the switchback path and you make your way up to the entrance of the cave system. You see a hallway in front of you that terminates into a 3-way intersection, and there is a left turn off of that hallway right after the entrance.
Kwisatz, lost in thought, looks up to see his companions exploring a small side cave. He hikes up his robes and hurries to catch up, yelling up to them excitedly "Oh! What have you found up there?"
When Kwiz gets to the top, due to how narrow the pathway is, which is a perfect size for him, incidentally, he can't really see past the rest of the party. Leaning down slightly, he looks back and forth between the legs of his new companions, and he can see that there's a hewn out hallway in the cave. It looks like there's a left turn right away and a left and right turn at the end of the hall.
“I’ll follow your lead, but how about we try the first turn and go from there? They’re bound to be in there somewhere.” Rush says barely above a whisper, but he’s got his shield and mace at the ready, as though prepared for danger.
Oban takes one...two steps forward so that he can see down the first turn-off, and he's looking for traps, but sees none. To him, it looks perfectly safe. Looking down the hallway to the left, Oban sees that it doesn't go very far, but it almost seems to open up into some kind of room, or at the very least, there's a turn in the hallway that gets a bit wider than everything else he can see.
Though Kwisatz doesn't have much experience adventuring, he does understand that some are better than he would be at assessing danger, and is keeping an eye out behind them while the others explore the small cave. While he waits the party can hear him quietly talking to the raven on his shoulder, saying "Isn't this exciting Duncan?! A cave with missing gnomes and strange mushrooms. I can't wait to see what else we find!"
Hearing Kwis mutter about missing gnomes makes Oban even more nervous, he takes out his bow and moves down the left hallway, crouching slightly and stepping as quietly as he can.
