Hatch and Lok both get the impression that Barok is very genuine in everything he says, and a particularly honest individual. However Lok also gets the vague idea that Barok might be withholding information, perhaps in the way people do to protect someone's feelings or maintain someone's innocence, or in the way people tell the truth without telling the whole truth, or something like that.
Hmm, rare perhaps, but not unique, says Barok, stroking his golden beard. Then, slapping Hatch on the back, he says:
Tell you what, let's do the best we can, eh? I'd like to help ye to solve this riddle, and by the sounds of it, I've got to lie about something. I'd be lying if I said I'm completely without guile, but straight out untruth just don't come natural like. At least this time it seems like no-one's life is in immediate danger ... except that fella over there.
The gnolls and goblinoids seem to have sated their desire for entertainment, and they disperse back to their tables in the bar, wiping the blood from their mouths and hands. For the time being, Delmon's mangled body remains in the center of the room.
Lia slowly awakens to find herself laying on the floor of what appears to be one of the rooms of the lodge. Looking around gingerly, Lia can also see the unconscious form of Bentley the halfling in the corner of the room. Seated on the bed watching her is what appears to be a half-dwarf/half-demon creature. Ah, there you are. Welcome back! it says in a gravelly voice.
"Back? I- Who are you? What did you to do Bentley? And me?" Lia says, watching the creature with narrow eyes. She doesn't break eye contact but discreetly feels her hip for the hilt of her longsword.
"Alright. We just need a plan on how and what and who you should lie about and to, I guess," Hatch said, somewhat relieved Barok was willing to give it a try.
"We should all get together to crack this thing, and since Delmon is... well, Delmon is gone. So that just leaves Lia to to plan this with. Let's find her," the red tiefling said, getting up from his seat slowly.
"Least I'm not still woozy from earlier...largely."
Throm has been quietly observing the events for some time. Having never been a gambler by nature, his attention was more focused on finding and inventorying those that were consistently showing up at each iteration of the hotel. More so the ones who were not changing with the iterations and therefore not part of the “trap” but victims of it.
OOC: with a passive perception of 14, did he see Lia disappear with “Bentley”?
Throm: You can assume that anyone that has joined as a player carries over into each iteration. I have a list of everyone that's ever arrived, but if they aren't actively participating then you can assume they are present as idle observers. If you want to interact with any of these, I can roleplay them in their absence. Presumably there were a few other random patrons present at the time of the curse who would also carry over, but we can ignore those for the sake of simplicity. Willagee, Kardinya and Bentley are the only 'staff'. From what you saw in chapter 2, they don't remember anything from the previous iterations, but observing the Bentley/Lia interaction, you can observe that Bentley DID appear to remember previous events. Throm would have observed Lia's collapse and watched (or helped?) her get carried by a concerned Bentley to an upstairs room to recuperate. Andree was also at the table and seems to be fine.
Hatch enters the restaurant with Barok to find several people standing around, including Throm, but not Lia. Upon inquiring, he is soon told by one of the observers that she seems to have collapsed and been taken upstairs to rest.
Meanwhile .... You can call me Applecross, rumbles the half-fiend, stretching his red leathery wings and shifting his mail armor into a more comfortable position. My mistress is concerned you're far too clever for her little game, and sent me to slow you down. Apparently you're the easiest one to persuade - so lucky you - you get to stay here with me. Perhaps I'll go find a few more friends later. Then looking at Bentley in the corner he adds: He's just sleeping, like you were. I couldn't have two of us wandering around here, could I? Lia still has her longsword, but Applecross doesn't seem concerned by that.

How does a red dragon blow out the candles on its birthday cake?
Lia just wanted to check it was there. She stands up, feeling a little indignant sitting on the floor. She collects her thoughts for a moment, before relaxing her expression. "Applecross? If you didn't already know, I'm Lia." She takes another glance at Bentley, before sitting down. (I'm assuming there's a chair somewhere in the room.) "Who's your mistress? Is that the one we call Mad Maggie? And persuade? Of what?"
Willagee rubs his hand over his chin thoughtfully as he pauses to consider Lok's questions. Well, sir, I've got to know him fairly well in the months he's been staying here. A very friendly chap, sir, quite talkative and with so many stories. They all seem to end with a thought-provoking message, like he's trying to make the world a better place one story at a time. I've not met anyone quite like him, really, sir. Willagee pauses again, then continues a little more softly: But then I must say, sir, between you and me, I can't help but admit ... well, how can I put it? Like there's something he's keeping to himself and always will. Something important. But then I think to myself, sir, perhaps we all have those kind of secrets. Something personal that we like to keep close to the chest, if you get my meaning, sir.
Throm guides Hatch and Barok up the stairs toward the room where he saw Bentley take Lia. For such an elderly dwarf walking with the aid of a staff, he doesn't seem one bit too slow to keep up with the energetic tiefling. Arriving on the second floor, Throm crosses the landing toward the door - to find it locked. (The room certainly seemed empty when Throm brought Lia inside)
Applecross seems delighted that Lia is willing to chat rather than fight, and he settles himself more comfortably on the middle of the bed. Yes, that's her - the one you call Mad Maggie. But she's not mad, she's very clever. As for persuading - well I'm glad you fell for the spiked drink trick first, but should the need arise I can be rather persuasive. At this Applecross stares a little harder at Lia just for a moment, then looks away. But in that moment Lia caught a brief sensation of the fiendish power behind the eyes and the difficulty it might be to resist, and she shudders as she remembers the sweet, awful charm of the Barovian count. There is no malice in the half-demon's eyes however, and he continues to chatter away conversationally. That's why she sent me, you know, because I'm her favorite and she can count on me. It's so much fun watching you all suffer and be all confused! Tell me what's been the worst part for you so far? Applecross seems almost like a child begging for a story, but one that only wants to hear the worst parts of the tale.

How does a red dragon blow out the candles on its birthday cake?
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Throm watches Barok, both amazed by his nimbleness and a bit suspicious due to him being new to us. Throm steps to the side of the door appears to position himself for a breach. With his face parallel to the door and in a position to see the door and Barok, he uses the back of his hand to knock, not forcefully but respectfully as if not to wake Lia.
”Bentley, Lia, is everything alright?”
While calling through the door, Throm wants to gauge the reaction of Barok.
Investigation: 7
That should have been Insight, not Investigation, which would have been +1 instead of -1. So, 12, for what it's worth.
(Insight might be more appropriate here, but all good). There is no answer on the other side of the door. Barok seems to be curious about this friend of yours, and genuinely concerned to learn of her ill health. He seems to still be waiting for an opportunity to try some new tactic in the search for a solution to the riddle.
Willagee scoops up the gold and quickly says Thank you, sir, very generous of you, sir, very generous indeed. But I'm afraid I'm not too knowledgeable about such things, sir, and can't offer you any more than you already know.

It is the 3. It kept giving me a weird error on the dice until I tried rolling twice. It was weird.
ok, cool.

How does a red dragon blow out the candles on its birthday cake?
Yep. Don't know why it didn't want to roll.
Sometimes it says "Dice rolls not available" or something like that. Usually if edit and just add a space or a comma or something, it comes good.
How does a red dragon blow out the candles on its birthday cake?
That was it. Will have to remember that trick.
Lok has a genuine look of worry on his face.
"Something wrong Barok? You look like somethings bothering you."
"Must be a very unique nature if you can't deceive even to save someone's life," Hatch said, quite worried.
Hmm, rare perhaps, but not unique, says Barok, stroking his golden beard. Then, slapping Hatch on the back, he says:

Lok watches as Hatch and Barok wander off, but the barbarian does not follow them.
Lok waits until he is sure Barok has left the room with Hatch
"Willagee, my good man" the barbarian waves him over
"How well do you know that Dwarf, Barok? Do you Trust him?" Lok questioned, putting his mug down on the table.

Throm would have offered to help “Bentley” get Lia upstairs, being pretty sure the halfling would have had his hands full trying to manage it himself.
OOC: I’ll have to let you resolve if I entered the room and saw the real Bentley or not.

"hmmm" Lok rubs his temples, taking in what Willagee told him. "Very useful."
"Thanks Willagee" The barbarian said, getting up.
"One last thing, before I catch up with Hatch and the others."
