I would say that one of the saddles is halfling-friendly, allowing Alton both to mount and dismount, and also to ride the horse without any further adjustments. If you wanted just to get two horses and share, you could, but I assume Alton would prefer his own?
However, after attempting to stand on the horse's back, Alton find himself very quickly in the dirt. The horse didn't even move; you just fell off. You don't lose any HP, but your clothes take 3 mud damage.
Considering your backgrounds, do any of you actually know how to ride a horse? Could you all please make Animal Handling checks, and if you don't think your character would have had much experience with horses, roll with disadvantage.

Balassar sits up straight as he grabs the reigns, chuckling a little at the halflings misfortune. He remembered his training and the times that they needed to ride and the lessons from his failures. He looks to the halflings "Sit up straight and relaxed. Next grab the reigns, but be gentle. Finally, keep your eyes where you want to go."
OOC:
Mercenary Veteran gives proficiency with vehicle (land) so I don't know if you want to count that as being proficient with the mount or just with items that attach to the mount. Though Balassar still has an animal handling score.
(I would say that proficiency with land vehicles would give Balassar enough experience with horses to make a straight check, but he's not necessarily a skilled or experienced rider himself; as you say, it was more driving vehicles than riding. It would probably give advantage on some animal handling checks related to caring for or calming horses.)
Balassar, you find your horse responds instantly to your commands, and though you've not spent much time in the saddle yourself, you feel comfortable and in control.

"Alright, lets try this again with equipment better suited for me." Alton climbs back onto the back of his horse and settles in like Balassar said to and tries to move the horse a little bit.
Animal Handling: 6 (I would say Alton has seen people ride horses and ponies around on the farms and through the village, but has not ridden one himself. So, the roll will be with disadvantage. Also, I just liked the idea of all three horses having human sized riding gear and Alton trying to ride with it at least once.)

The dragon cannot assist, I'm afraid. It keeps away from the horse, as though trying not to alarm it. Nevertheless, Wash you manage to mount the horse, and though it's difficult to control, you are able to set off.
Alton, the horse sniffs you intently as you lie in the dirt, and then pushes you with her head. As you climb on, you find that she is not very responsive, but also very docile and easy enough to stay seated upon.
You set off. Balassar, you need to give some help to Wash and especially Alton . Wash's horse is excitable and will easily start to gallop in random directions, and Balassar has to chase after more than once. Alton, your horse just keeps coming to an inexplicable halt in the middle of the road. Balassar is able to give Alton some tips, but it happens again and again through the day and you end up making no quicker progress than you would have on foot.
You are headed south from Hupperdook, leaving behind you the smoking factories. The mountain peaks of the Silberquel Ridge are to your right, and to your left the familiar rich fertile lands of the Marrow Valley, with farms and small villages every few miles, dominate the landscape.
Please give me a marching order, and let me know whether you are attempting to move at a fast, normal or slow pace. You won't encounter any dangers on this first day or travel, so please also let me know what you are doing at night; you will be able to find a small village with an inn capable of housing you if you wish. Alternatively, if you are making camp, please each give me a Perception check.
Balassar stays in the rear keeping view of the two “I suggest we just keep it at a good trot while you two are still getting the hang of this. We can stop at dusk at whatever village and grab an inn. Unless you two want to camp under the stars.”

(I would think that with how Balassar has to keep Alton's horse going and chasing after Wash's horse the pace would be around the slow to normal pace.)
Alton does his best to keep his horse going but has a hard time figuring out how to do that; even with Balassar's help. "I think we should take spending nights at Inns whenever we can. I know camping is a big part of traveling, but if we have the opportunity, we should take it." Alton smiles, "On a side note, I might be able to get us a discount at the Inns we stay at too. The pace for the first day is certainly slow, but I will keep in mind that you are aiming for a normal pace. However, with help from Balassar, Alton and Wash are getting a little more confident in the saddle, so from now on you will be able to maintain a normal or slow pace without needing to make an Animal Handling check. Fast pace, not so much.
The inn's name is Wheat and Wine; Alton you saw the inn, though you did not stay in it, on your way to Hupperdook. The proprietors are halflings and though the rooms are simple, they cater to all folks and the atmosphere is welcoming. Please deduct 1 silver for the room, and 6 coppers for a meal (or one ration, if you prefer).
As you are in the common room, another traveller enters; a human in his late twenties, short blond hair, clothes that suggest he is a hunter or traveller, a shortbow across his back. He comes up and introduces himself. Hey there, travellers. The name's Art. Mind if I join you?
Balassar just breathes a sigh of relief as they make it to the inn. He dismounts Nyx and looks to his companions, as he begins to tie up the horse to a nearby post. As they get their room and meal, Balassar also asks for a large tankard of ale. All in all it was a good first day of travel for their adventure, nothing to complain about and nothing threatened their lives. As the human approaches he just nods taking a sip "Art...you a painter or something?" he asks looking at the man.
Heh! Short for Artori, but only ma calls me that. And I've no skill in painting at all, nor drawing neither. Just a traveller, looking for a bit of a chat. I think you guys were ahead of me travelling down from Hupperdook; I saw you once or twice, like you pulled ahead on those horses, but then somehow I kept catching up and seeing you again. Still, no harm in that, you travel as you please of course. He waves to a passing server and orders a tankard of ale.
[1 silver and 3 copper deducted; however, is the 1 silver for a private room (or room just for us three)? If not and that is available, Wash is happy to pay a little more for security/privacy of them not having to share a room with other travellers.
On the way to the common room for a meal and drink, Wash will whisper to his little dragon friend "Can you please help me by keeping an eye on my bag? We cannot lose the metal box with a combination lock, as it is very important."
Wash will then (as subtly as possible) try and guide the party to a table that is hard to get to the exit as possible (hopefully other tables in the way, or as far as possible from the exit if not). He will also (as subtly as possible) loop his backpack strap around his foot and have the backpack in front of him as he sits and will keep an eye on it. He is being fairly paranoid, but tries to hide it as best as he can.]
Alton watches Balassar hitch his horse and attempts to do the same, following the same movements for the knot. Once done, he makes his way inside and looks around. "I saw this place on my way to Hupperdook, but didn't stop. It looks cozy." He will make his way up to the counter to order his food and offers the barkeep his services as entertainment if guests request any. With that out of the way, Alton will follow Wash to whichever table he picks.
Sitting at the table, Alton looks up at the newly arrived human, "I'm Alton, nice to meet you Art, and I'm okay with you joining as long as my friends are too. Two of us are new to riding on horses so there was some learning and catching that needed to be done on the way here." Alton holds out his hand to shake Art's. "What brings you out to the Marrow Valley? Are you heading to Felderwind?"

It's one silver per room. If you want to share, you can.
Wash, the image comes back of yourself, handing gold coins to a market stall vendor and receiving a large dog in exchange, and then the dog tied to your bag. The creature snorts and turns round on your shoulder so that its rear end is towards you, then it settles again. You notice that it has positioned itself well to keep an eye on your bag.
Ah, I'm no rider, Art says. Never been on a horse and never wanted to neither. Big scary beasts, I saw one throw the rider and she broke her arm in two places, couldn't work for a month or more. Nah, best of luck to you. Aye, Felderwin's the destination, got some work lined up there, if you can believe it, even in this season, but then I'm no farmer, I'm a hunter by trade. Don't know the details, but I'll find out when I get there, same as I always do. How about you? You a hunter there? He eyes your various weapons cautiously.
Balassar just chugs his ale, getting another "Mercenaries. Hoping to find some work." he just pats Alton on the head "Supposedly this one is a performer at times also." he just smiles "Well play the bar a diddy why don't ya?"
Feeling just a little patronized, Alton digs the lute out from his backpack and sets up a bit more central in the tavern. After taking the time to make sure the lute is tuned he strums a few cords. "I heard this one a while back growing up and it is one of my favorites." He says more directed at his friends than anyone else in the common room. Alton starts to play an upbeat tune while retelling a story about a devil trying to make a deal with a fiddler; the fiddler's soul for a golden fiddle. When he get to where the devil is playing, Alton changes the beat to be more ominous and heavy; while using Prestidigitation to add extra musical notes and puffs of smoke that come from his finger tips. Then switches back to a more lively and upbeat tune when the fiddler plays.
Balassar just nods as he walks over to the horse with Alton and just lifts him up onto the horse. He then goes over to the brown mare and mounts the horse.
