The snake's head gets blow open and apart as the bolt lances in on its mouth as it opens up to bite Allister. Its body falls lifelessly to the ground behind the wall.
The remaining snake spots an opening in Allister's defenses and lunges in. Allister gets his weapon up and in the way, but the fangs of the creature still scrap against his forearm (6 damage).
"Do not let me fall, Mazemaker..." Sthara whispers under her breath as she rushes towards the edge of the cliff. She holds a hand out towards the rope and shouts "Away!" and fades into a cloud of mist which quickly dissipates, reappearing part of the way along the rope, stomach lurching as gravity sets in (misty step). She begins to haul herself to the other side.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Watching as Allister finishes off some snakes along with the help of the others, Lemon notices one last one though some cover, but just not enough. With that motive, Lemon gives a howl of delight and moves forward to whack on his own.
Dismissing the nature bless spell opon himself, Lemon transformed from a spider and back into a dwarf. Back with his favorite club, Lemon brought it downwards to the snake.
The large snake uses as much of the wall as it can to deflect the club attack. It pulls its body from the lip just as the club comes in. Whack! Wood connects with stone as Lemon swings.
Back on the rope, Sthara puts one hand over the other, pulling herself along. The rope feels tight in her hands, which is reassuring. One hand in front of the other, she paces herself, but suddenly she slips when using her hand to hold her weight while positioning her legs. A moment later she is falling. With a crack and crash, she falls 140 feet. The sorceress bounces off the first rock, sliding and tumbling down the slope. Several rocks tumble down to pluff down into the lava. Sthara's body stops thirty feet shy of the angry element.
Boosey sees Sthara appear halfway across the rope and start making her way across. He climbs on himself, and starts pulling his slight body across the void. As if in slow motion he sees Sthara begin to slip, and he shouts “Sthara!” After her a she tumbled down to the rocks below. Heart thumping, he continues on, trying not to think of what might happen if he slips.
Allister hears Boosey´s shout and realizes something has happened to Sthara. Pure rage fuels his slashes with his rapier that sever the snakeˋs off its body. He drops his weapons ans runs to the cliff to get a clear picture of what has happened.
Nenne feels the rope jostle under her hands and her heart nearly stops. Out of the corner of her eye, the sorceress plummets to the rocks. "NO!" Nenne screams. She finishes pulling herself across and grips her holy symbol in a desperate plea for Kelemvor's favor. She shouts across the chasm, "I need to get to her! Boosey, go back and untie the rope! I'll climb down!"
Turning her face toward the snake, she lifts her hand and a jet of ruby flame roars toward the creature (Sacred Flame DEX 14, 8 damage, no cover bonus). She waves to get the fighter's attention. "Allister, Sthara fell! I'm going after her."
As soon as Allister sees Sthara on the ground he takes the rope and unties the grappling hook. He pulls over, the rope from the other side, ties it around Nenneˋs waist under her mail, makes sure it is safe and says „We’ll hold the rope, it’s already too short as it is. Just don’t let go. Lemon, I need your help here.“
Nenne lowers herself down the steep slope held by her companions above. At the end of the rope the cleric looks down and swallows hard at the descent. The heat from here is extreme, causing Nenne to sweat profusely. With a prayer to Kelemvor, she lets go assessing her land as she falls. She lands between a pair or rocks, slamming up against the larger one hard (14 damage). Nenne can see Sthara there only twenty feet away. She is head first towards the lava and her left shin is cracked open; Nenne can see the bone. The sorceress is unmoving on the sweltering hillside.
"Sthara?" Nenne calls, imbuing the name with divine power to spare the dying. When she feels the magic repel under a weak life force, she sighs. "Thank you, Fair Judge, that I am here this time."
She darts to the fallen mage, carefully picking her steps so as not to slip, and kneels beside her. "This is not where your maze ends, Sthara Izhsoan," she whispers. Placing gentle fingers on her forehead, she casts Cure Wounds at 3rd level. (No rolling - 27 hp instantly restored.) She holds the sorceress' hand until she rouses.
"Nenne? What on earth happened? My leg..." Sthara's leg, previously mangled, has healed over with the power of Nenne's healing, but the shin is clearly shifted halfway through, healed incorrectly.
Nenne frowns as sweat pours down her face from the extreme heat. "I'm afraid that is something my magic is not strong enough to mend." She sits back and watches the lava burble, both mesmerized and terrified of its ferocity.
Allister and Lemon work hard above stripping small trees and supple branches. Any fiber they can collect is woven into as much rope as they can muster. Their dilligent efforts to lengthen the rope down to their companions takes several hours.
Orvex shakes his head at the current situation and tells Boosey that he does not envy either of those groups of two. He explains that on one hand, they are hurt and bleeding down in a lava filled boiling pot and on the other they are near a shrine filled with who knows what kind of horrors. He expresses his great interest in knowing what lies inside the shrine, but he does not wish to cross if it means climbing a rope.
Once the makeshift rope is added to the existing rope, Sthara and Nenne climb out onto the island, sweaty and tired.
As Nenne hauls herself over the top, her skin is an unhealthy shade of violet and her vestments, soaked through under her armor, smell of pumice and ash. She is very unsteady as she walks.
"I've now seen lava," she says with a weak smile. "I cannot say I enjoyed the experience."
She grimaces and gingerly holds her head. "I don't feel very well."
Helping the weak bodies of Nenne and Sthara, he doesn't know what to do so he awkwardly pats them upon the back. "Ye... ye want to explore this temple now?"
"To be frank, I'm concerned I will be a liability to you all," Nenne admits. "I am very dizzy. The heat down there was atrocious, and I burned myself on my armor when I attempted to doff it. We need to get the others safely across. And if we must explore this place tonight, I urge you to be cautious. I do not know how much I can help in my current state."
Nenne suggests a harness of sorts to be crafted out of the freshly crafted rope so get Boosey and Orvex safely across. After a good deal of testing that includes Allister's heavier load in the harness over safe land, it is ready to go. The grappling hook is set on the other side and some time later when the sun is promising to start setting in an hour or so, Orvex and Boosey have traversed the dangerous pit and are on the island side. The six companions have a short, much needed rest among the palm trees growing in front of this squat building. Worn steps ascend to an archway that forms the entrance to the shrine. Reliefs of coiled serpents flank the entrance. Above the entrance, a stone plaque bears a cuneiform message that Orex translates during the rest. He claims that is says, "Moa teaches us that secrets hide the truth.”
The walls of the rubble-strewn corridor leading into the shrine are carved with serpents, and arrow slits are spaced along them every 5 feet. Cobwebs fill the arrow slits and hang like drapes from the corridor ceiling. Nenne shakes her head at the corridor saying, "Not today." and the rest of the island is explored instead. Finding nothing very remarkable, the party decides to extend their rest and end the evening, much appreciated by Sthara and Nenne. Lemon passes his time talking to critters that crawl or fly about and before long night comes, lit by the glow of the churning lava below. Morning comes with an open sky that the blue can be seen through - a rare occurrence these past months.
