Worlo looks nervous as the Vedalken speaks. He hurriedly explains that Elok is a wereboar and Laskilar is notorious for being able to get into or out of any buildings or restraints, though he doesn't know how. He swears the information is true and begs Funderburk not to hurt him.
"We need to have Nenne cast a spell to warn him then." He looks towards Worlo, "Worry not Captain, no harm will befall on you. But I must inquire one last question: Where Captain Lasiker make his... trap?" He looks at his friends, the more we know to tell Horace, the better, and plus if it it close to us, we may be able to join Horace in the frey.
Nenne closes her eyes and speaks a message to Horace, "Laskilar may have a trap prepared for you. Details unknown. Be wary. I fear he may also target Fort Beluarian. What is your current situation?"
The lizardfolk has quietly tagged along and kept to himself. He was not sure if being with this group was a good idea yet; but it seemed his best option of strengthening his powers to deal with this curse. He eerily remembered under creatures wandering the swamps deeper in the jungle and a shiver ran down his scaly back. This was something he was uncomfortable with. He had no formal education in the ways of the divine or arcane, so anything outside the physical world provoked a special kind of apprehension in his.
”This pirates thing concern Vargach. He no like more pirate. How to beat them? This Horace sound imprudent.”
He said to no one in particular, nervously pacing up and down. He had also listened to the tale of the dragons. Yet another potential threat to his clan. The life of the lone guardian offered little to no rest. It was not a life for the weak.
”How far dwarves from here? Maybe look into, dragon sound dangerous.”
In answer to Vargach's question Eku says, "A couple tendays I would guess. We'd have to go around the mountains, though I must admit, I am hesitant to seek out a dragon myself."
Day 23
The party and company are having breakfast when the low sound of flapping wings gets their attention. A dragon bearing fiery red scales flies high overhead in a southward direction. It pays little heed to the group of travellers and soon disappears over the horizon.
Days 24-30
These days are met with growing anticipation as the group makes their way closer and closer to the rendezvous point. No more trouble comes the party's way probably due to the size of their current group. As the rendezvous point comes into view it's clear that the ship in waiting is Horace's. With hands on his hips and a broad smile he greets the party from nearby a shored rowboat, "I was beginning to think you weren't going to show!" He takes in the massive group, scanning them over, taking particular notice of Vargach.
Noticing the look, Funderburk began to explain everything to the captain. The fight within the cove, the findings of a new partner, and the eventual capture of Captain Worlo. As a little bonus, he threw in the story of Boosey almost getting impaled to death by little rusty magical swords. "What has happened with you Mr. Horace? How fair have your days been?" Funderburk also shows Horace which people are meant for capture, and which ones are allies. He even tells him of the two traveler's they met along their way here to the check point. "Were you able to capture any pirates? Or at least kill any? And how is the boat? we both know the bounty is mighty high for capturing one."
As the party journeys onward, Nenne spends some time talking with Wallace and Fisher, asking them how they came to serve under Worlo and what their lives were like before. She is quiet the rest of the time, and keeps to herself toward the back of the group. When they take respites, she stands off to the side and reads from her prayer book. If anyone is awake during the part of the watch she takes alone, they occasionally hear her singing softly in her native tongue, slow and melancholy melodies.
She will approach Allister at some point before they reach Horace and ask him what he intends to do with Worlo once they reach their destination. "You said you had hope that his death would bring you some peace," she concludes. "I merely worry what should happen if it doesn't." After a pause, she adds, "I will not interfere with the path you choose to take, though I will pray for your decision. And if you ever feel like sharing some of what he has burdened you with, I promise that my ear is both understanding and easy to bend."
Upon their reunion with Horace, Nenne greets the sailor with a polite inclination of her head. "I apologize for the lack of communication, though you seemed to have things well in hand. How did you fare? Also, how are your provisions? I don't believe I specified our numbers."
When Allister is approached by Nenne about Worlo´s fate he doesn’t know to respond at first. „Life would be much easier without all of this what if and whether or not. One way or another he will die. By my hand, the curse or the noose. But he said we need his help to defeat the curse. That’s what really bothers me. I guess we’ll have some time to think about what to do with him.“ Most of the time until Horace arrives he spends thinking and brooding. Once Horace arrives he greets him. “Good to see you alive. You still owe me 10 gold pieces.“
Horace gives Funderburk an uncomfortable side look as he begins his reply, "I was mostly fortunate in the battle, but I wouldn't have these pirates killed unless they forced my hand. It's not something I would take pride in, but rather an ugly truth to stopping their cruelty along the coast. Some died, but most are still about in chains." His attention shifts to the rest of the party as a whole before going on, "I can't say where the other schooner, nor where the Dragonfang have gone, but the Stirge is in our hands." He gestures out to the two ships sitting side by side on the water; the larger of the ships is missing its forward sail.
He moves to stand in front of Worlo with a hard expression. His harsh gaze does not last while staring at the man; something in his eyes strikes a chord of pity in the Fist captain. He turns back to Allister and says, "Laskilar was in our hands, hell he was in my brig! I personally locked him up only to find him gone a few hours later. Not to worry though. You'll get your due, and your ten gold." He laughs at the light note. Finally, the red captain turns a look to Nenne and says, "Our provisions are not in very good standing. Even less now that you've brought this many more mouths to feed. We're going to have to ration a bit further to make it back to the port. We've plenty of water though."
“I think something’s wrong with my ears. He was? He disappeared? The captains are still on the run? What is going on again? Looks like our job isn’t finished yet. We REALLY need to discuss your pirate hunting strategy.“
"I wish I could tell you more! We took him into custody, stripped him of his weapons and threw him in the brig. A few hours later he was just gone. My only guess is that he's got to be some sort of swashbuckling spell slinger." Horace shrugs before adding, "He'll have to find another base of operation, ship, crew, and coin to start again. You and I both know those tasks could keep him busy for years."
“I can tell you he won’t even have month, apart from the bounty this is getting personal. As soon as this curse thing is over I’m gonna get his sorry arse to Port Nyanzaru.“
Boosey thinks for a moment and asks Horace "Did you make a head count of your prisoners before he vanished? It may be worthwhile doing another just to make sure he isn't still there. If you come up with the same number...", he opens his arms wide, "he's probably in with his crew." He considers a moment longer. "Hell, have you counted your own crew. It's possible he's a Doppelganger, although it doesn't explain how he escaped your brig. He was in there by himself?"
"He was in his own cell. We did count the men. I have had days to look for his sorry arse. Believe me, I tried. Lost myself to a bout of anger for three days." He shakes his head. "We've dealt a great blow here and I'm grateful for that. I just hope Zindar will be just as grateful. Unless you have other business I should know about, let's get moving."
"I worry where he went," Nenne says, frowning. "A man with the ability to vanish whenever he likes may very well have the ability to cause havoc from a distance. He also seemed intent to exact revenge on Liara, thinking her to have withheld information from him about this encounter. I might like to send a message to Jago, asking if all is well at Fort Beluarian."
Her eyes travel to the ship in the distance. She grasps her amulet as she thinks, and a faint breeze wafts against her silvery locks seemingly out of nowhere. She smiles a little, and the cool undertones in her skin give way to a hint of warmth. "Do not worry, captain. I will be able to provide some food for our sojourn. With wise rationing, none of us shall go hungry or suffer."
A sudden thought crosses her mind and the peach tones in her skin fade, replaced with what is now her usual pensive blue. "You are well-traveled on these seas," she addresses Horace. "Know you of anyone with power, wealth, or influence whose initials are V.S.? We discovered a letter in our raid from such a person that seemed to be quite knowledgeable about both us and the Death Curse."
The captain thinks for a moment before confessing that he doesn't know whos initials they might be. He suggests the captain may know more than he's telling for a brief moment, but after looking the man over, he drops the subject. Worlo still shakes, especially in his sleep. He's never recovered fully from his experience back on his deathbed. Allister sees the change more than anyone since they have a long history. The man is utterly broken and the fighter could only consider him a husk of his former self. Whatever he witnessed that day must have been terrible. A while later once everyone is aboard Horace gives the order to set sail. The pirate crew was split in half, some sailing on Horace's ship, while others operate the Stirge. Moving isn't quite as fast as it could be, due to the dropped sail, but six days later, Port Nyanzaru comes into sight.
Day 36
The ships arrive in port in early morning under heavy clouds that promise much rain, but have yet to do so.
As soon as the ship is safely anchored Allister goes to Zindar´s office, eager to get the bounty and to see what happened to Liara and the other conspirators who worked with the pirates. He also inquires about any news regarding the Death Curse and the initial VS
