(Total cover from Dissonant whispers means covering your ears, putting yourself in a box or some other situation where sound cannot reach you. Total cover is about my ability to hit you...and you dont have total cover from sound. Also, just because you are invisible doesnt mean I shouldn't know your exact location unless you hide. Its like a predator cloak, the air is distorted unless you apply the skill of stealth, but wutevs. )
(ooc: total cover from any spell means having 100% of yourself blocked by an obstruction, if the spell targets... area of effects are handled differently.)

A target with total cover can't be targeted directly by an attack or a spell, although some spells can reach such a target by including it in an area of effect. A target has total cover if it is completely concealed by an obstacle.
(the basic rule for targeting spells is you can't target someone with total cover... and can only hit them with AoE spells if they are within the area of effect.)
(it doesn't say anything about sight or sound or anything else)
(and when someone is invisible you don't automatically know where they are... that's the whole point of being invisible... you have to detect them somehow, I suggest listening for footfalls :))

But other rules still apply, you have to be within range and your target can't have total cover.

What I think that means is the specific conditions of dissonant whispers, targeting based on your ability to hear me made clear by the condition in the spell where if you are deaf it fails, beats the general rule of traditional cover. I strongly believe this spell can be used to target shit you cant see regardless of cover. I personally believe that Dissonant Whispers is a classic bard workhorse spell for these reasons.The idea that some bard spells use targeting based on sound rather than sight is pretty cool and thematically makes sense.)
