Karib grins at Merric's remark. "Aye, my thoughts exactly," he says with a glance at the horse. His smile fades as his gaze lingers on it's scars.
Turning to the merchant he asks, "Baldurs' Gate, eh? And where do you base yourself -- when you are not on the road?"
He nods at the reply, then glances over at the recovering horse. "I have a horse that has seen grave mistreatment; it needs a home far from danger. It is yours if you think it will help on your journey and if you swear to treat it well and deliver it to the Temple of Gond in Baldur's Gate."
If the merchant agrees, Karib will hand him a note to deliver to his old teacher, containing instructions to treat it well or deliver it to his parents if that should prove too difficult.
Arietta sticks her lip out in a pout when Rogram heals himself. "Aww. I liked those wounds. They made you look so manly," she teases.
Lamont answers Karib, "Waterdeep is as close to my home as any, but I find myself on the road often. The life of a trader doesn't offer many chances to relax." Looking over Karib's horse, he says, "You're right, I can see she's been underfed - and these score marks...goodness, how many whips have you felt, lass?" Lamont pats the horse's neck. "Of course, I am more than willing to deliver her to the temple; and you have my word she will be treated well. We'll take it slow to the next hostelry, and then buy some more animals there. I hope you will allow me to pay you for the help. Would twenty gold pieces suffice?"
Rogram regards Arietta for a second, trying to determine whether she's being truthful with him. Did she really prefer him close to death? In the end, he smiles at her kindly. "I need to help Leda secure things. I'll see you later around the fire?" He parts ways and heads toward Lai's wagon.
Karib smiles, nodding slowly to the merchant, "Money's always welcome, but you've suffered a loss here. I'd only accept a payment that you can easily afford."
He scans the carnage again, "And if that's just your words of thanks, then I will be content."
Lamont grins back at Karib. "Trust me, my friend. You've saved me much more than this payment. You do your temple proud," he says. Once the exchange has been made, and things have been settled, the wagon wheels hit the road once more, leaving the hobgoblins for the carrion birds. Lamont salutes again as the caravan rolls by, and his guards work to hitch their new horse to its reins, preparing to depart in the opposite direction.
Guards, merchants, and travelers alike quickly settle back into the routine of the road. Stopping once more in the evening to rest, good progress is made along the road before the wagons pull off to the side of the road at nightfall to set camp.
For Rogram:
OOC: Rogram does not learn anything from his insight check.
OOC: Characters have gained the benefits of a short rest. If you would like to roll any hit dice, please do so in your next post.
Each character has earned 300 XP for successfully defending the besieged wagon and getting them back on the road. Karib has also gained 20 gp and earned inspiration for finding a home for his rescued horse. Remember that inspiration must be used before a roll is made to grant that roll advantage (it cannot be used to re-roll a bad roll).
Rogram sits near Karib to rest. He is troubled by what Arietta said to him, but he decides to not speak of it with the cleric. He is content to just rest in the human's presence silently.
OOC: Used 3 hit dice and gained 24 hp (in game log).
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Merric finishes collecting his spent arrows and gives a jaunty wave to the merchant as they resume travel. Later, he approaches Rogram and gives him a friendly jab to the shoulder. “That was a brave thing you did back there, but be careful. You jumped pretty far ahead of us. Even I was not fast enough to get to you. It was a near thing.” he smiles and says no more of the fight that evening.
Rogram smiles at the elf. "I guess I didn't think about that," he responds. He gives Karib a glance. "I'll try to share my ideas before acting on them in the future." Remembering seeing Merry talk to the strangers, he asks, "Everyone ok?"
“They seemed none the worse for wear, we got there just in time it seems. A merchant out of Waterdeep traveling to Baldur’s Gate. Little news to share of the road ahead. I just hope there are no more hobgoblins around.” Merry looks over at Arietta in the distance “It looks like you made quite the impression with Arietta.”
Rogram turns to follow Merric's gaze. The half-dwarf frowns again. Looking back, he says to the elf, "I'm not sure what to make of her. She seems ... nice enough." His frown deepens. "When I healed myself, she seemed disappointed."
Merry let out a gleeful laugh. “You took away her chance to take care of your wounds. They love to fuss over those. Let’s hope you stay in one piece and don’t give her another chance.”
Rogram stares into space for a few moments, contemplating Merric's words. He had never been in a relationship before. None of the females in Greenest had shown him any special attention. It's possible that's why Arietta seemed disappointed. What did he know? And for what reason should he not trust the elf? A smile brightens Rogram's face. "That must be it," he says, looking back at Merry. "I'll let her know I've still got some aches and pains when I see her tonight." He rolls one shoulder and grimaces, then grins and chuckles.
Karib grunts and his wrinkles his nose. "Something not quite right about those two." Then he shrugs and looks at Rogram with a grin, "You've still got some colorful bruises I'd wager."
It is a peaceful night along the side of the road. The fireside fills with excited conversation as travelers recall the battle against the hobgoblins. Tales of Rogram's heroics, Merric's accuracy, and the magic of Akira and Karib flow freely along with the ale from Beyd's kegs.
Rogram awakes in the middle of the night to the sound of his tent opening. Groggily opening his eyes, he sees the beautiful form of Arietta entering. "Rogram? Rogram, wake up. It's Arietta, she's in trouble." It takes the woman shaking Rogram fully awake for him to realize that this is Zelina that has entered his tent. "Rogram, please. She needs your help," she says.
"Her foot," Zelina says as she exits the tent ahead of Rogram, already moving toward the nearby trees, "We took a little night walk through the forest, and she stepped on some sort of...trap thing, it's...she was bleeding so much. I couldn't get her out of it, and it was so heavy she can't move, she's...you're a smith, right? Please tell me there's something you can do. Please Rogram, I can't lose her!"
