Oak is huddled behind cover with Sarith, cradling his head in one of his massive hands. His other hand is pressed hard against an ugly spear-wound just under his ribs on one side, trying to stop the bleeding. Under his breath he mutters, “No, no, no, no, soldier! Oh no you don’t... not yet, not yet, come on!”.
He curses himself for not being able to stabilise the man. And curses himself for not bringing his army Healer’s Kit. If only he had some bandages or a salve.
((He makes a mental note to try and salvage or forage some supplies as soon as he can)).
Aimon quickly scans the crumbling wall to find a spot where he can climb up onto the ledge. Then using the ruined parapets for cover he runs in a crouch along the walkway to get closer to the remaining stone sentry.
From cover he strings another arrow and fires at the statue.
(Not sure how far Aimon is from the statue now. If he's within 80' going to try sneak attack from cover with hopefully advantage: Attack: 23 Damage: 8 plus Sneak Attack damage: 7 for total piercing - non magical damage - of: 15
If he's more than 80' away then he will still make the attack but thinking the advantage from hiding would be negated by the disadvantage from distance, so if not attacking with advantage no sneak attack and just straight plain attack: Attack: 7 Damage: 9 - Critical Miss
Boils down to if the statue is 80' or less away: 23 to hit and 15 non magical piercing damage
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Topsy: Dagger throw Attack: 25 Damage: 9
Topsy retrieves her dagger from the other statue and close some distance to the other before she throws it. It misses and sails into darkness.
Eldeth: Javelin Attack: 13 Damage: 8
Eldeth moves closer and hurls a javelin, but it bounces harmlessly of of its shin.
Jimjar: Crossbow Sneak Attack: 25 Damage: 22
After the last salvo of attacks, it looks severely damaged. Pieces of it have fallen off, and cracks have formed across its body. In a web of cracks on its chest, a blue glow seeps through the cracks. Realizing how badly damaged it is, it charges towards the group with an angry bellow. As it runs, it's heavy footfalls causes several pieces of its chest to flatter to the ground. A blue gem that is glowing intensely is revealed. Together, Jimjar, Caelynn, and Aimon fire their projectiles and so pierce the gem. The statue freezes in place and looks shocked a moment before it is incinerated in a radiant explosion that rocks the cavern. The shockwave knocks most of the party down and pushes them away from where the statue stood while partially deafening the group. Blinking the afterimage away, you see a smoking crater many times been larger than the one created by the fireball.
Aimon slumps against the ancient stone battlement for a moment, catching his breath. Then he gathers his bow and gear and runs quickly back along the wall and then climbs down and onto the stairs.
As he passes the gateway to the castle and spots the smoking crater and the scorch marks from the fireball he can’t help but smile.
You don’t have guards like that unless there’s something really worth guarding. But then he remembers the voice in his head. Was that just a ruse to lure them into this trap?
He calls down the stairs, “Is everyone mobile? There’s a wall up here, ringing the castle. Would provide some shelter for us to rest a bit.”
Caelynn trudges up the stairs towards Aimon, stopping and offering help to anyone who seems to be having particular trouble making their way up. She’s still a bit battered from the rockslide, but otherwise uninjured by the statues.
“If those were merely the sentries, I’d hate to see what awaits us inside. You mentioned some woman who has awoken recently? From what little I know, I think we’d really rather not meet her.”
She pauses, mulling over the best course of action.
”I propose two options. One: we bypass this place entirely. It’s dangerous and I don’t want any of us to die. Two: we make camp and sleep, really sleep. It’s been a very long day, and I, for one, am exhausted. We can reapproach once we’re rested and healed.”
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Oak stands up from besides the stairs. He looks wrecked... He see’s Trill as he walks out, and nods his thanks to her for saving Sarith (and Jimjar).
As the party comes together, he answers Caelynn with: “I could do with a rest!... I would be able to offer far more help to you all after a proper rest to regain some strength...” (it’s clear to everyone that this is an understatement).
He thinks for a while, and then continues “But I would also gladly help this frightened person trapped in the castle... if we can... ...Not long ago, I needed help, and you all came to my aid. You could have walked on by, but you didn’t, and I’m grateful”.
While the party consider next moves Oak just rummages through the wreckage of the sentries looking for anything that’s not simple rock (cloth, wood, gems, cogs, etc).
Perception check(?): 5 (investigation would be two less)
((forgot exhaustion lol so that should have been with disadvantage! Let’s just say he’s not in the right state of mind to rummage for anything. He’s probably just collecting some pretty but mundane rocks!))
Aimon looks back at the castle and the wall surrounding it.
"I think we can take shelter behind the wall. We could camp here and everyone can settle in for a cozy night's rest," he says as he finally notices the bleeding gash in his leg.
"Or maybe it's day time. I have no idea anymore. And up here we can enjoy the view of this magnificent cavern, and watching the smoking remains of that one statue drift away."
He moves down to help any of the others who need help coming up.
"And we really just need to watch the staircase and the castle entrance. Might be easier to protect."
Oak considers the junk he’s collected and drops most of it back on the ground. He keeps one tennis-ball-sized rock he likes the texture of ((assuming he’s can find one like that)), and places it in his pack.
((Oak’s pack is a satchel that’s slung over one shoulder. It looks pretty small on him, but would be absolutely huge on your average humanoid. It’s tied around his waist too, by leather straps (so it doesn’t swing around too much during combat). It sits high, a little way back, on his right hip))
Oak rejoins the party up near the top of the stairs by the castle walls. “I like your idea”, he says to Aimon “A good vantage point, easily defensible from most directions. I vote we rest up. I’m happy to take first watch...”.
”If the rest agree to set up camp here, I will take the next watch,” he says. “Can’t get enough of this creepy, mist shrouded plain. It’s truly special when no one else is awake and you jump at every small noise.”
((Are you resting behind the wall nearer the castle, or on the outside on the walkways or something?))
Exhausted from the day's exploits, the party beds down, and faint snoring and breathing disturbs the silent, mist-bound cavern of the Fields of Sorrow. From a distance, the mist would be calming if it weren't for the habit of the mist to form faces twisted in agony with outstretched claws.
Caelynn, as soon as you close your eyes, sleep takes you. You begin to dream of yourself waiting in a fine room. The floor is polished maliachite with flecks of golden minerals running through it. Burning torches line the marbled walls between jet pillars shaped to imitate trees that support the 20 by 20 foot chamber you are in. You are sitting on stone benches that produce from the walls while looking ahead at two massive, oaken double doors. Painted on the oiled wood is the profile of a face of an intensely beautiful women with vibrant green skin. Her features are elvish in appearance, and a sliver crown adorns her head. Her long, dark green hair cascades last her shoulders before the picture shows no more. While wondering who this is, a sharp knocking comes from the other side of the door before opening to reveal a creature you know as a treant. It says in deep and slow voice, "Sorry for reaching out to you like this, but Queen Titania wishes to speak with you. Follow me please." Using a branch-like arm, it pushes the door a little farther open and waits for you to follow. Its kind, yellow eyes beckon you forward.
As the others settle down to sleep, Oak takes up watch, thinking on the days events...
He tries to brush the soot and rock-dust out of his hide, as best he can with his hands, but thinks he wouldn’t mind finding a stream or some water to have a proper wash.
He unpacks and repacks his satchel ready for the morning. He checks his bow and arrows are still fine, considering the blast he took. And sets about gently sharpening his axe with his whetstone, while keeping a keen watch...
He notices Caelynn stir a little in her sleep, and wonders what horrors these people might have experienced before he joined them.
The treant leads you through a long hallway similar in design to the chamber you were in. You come to another set of door made out of a dark wood. The treant opens the door and gestures for you to enter. You step through the door and enter into a massive, circular chamber. Benches ring the room similar to an amphitheater. Sitting on these benches are an assortment of creatures stranger than the next. Animals sit and converse with each other. Giants argue with one another. Plant-Human hybrids watch those around them. You recognize that some of these creatures are spoken of in fairytales, but you weren't sure they really existed until now. As you enter, all conversations stop as all their eyes turn to you.
At the far end of the chamber, you see a huge figure resting on a gem -encrusted thrown. She looks like the painting you saw earlier. She is wearing a dress seemingly made of vines with flowers of many colors and sizes growing all over it. In her hand rests a diamond-topped, mithril scepter taller than you are. You walk towards the center of the room. The figure says, "I am Titania, Queen of the Feywild and ruler of the Fey courts. We have been watching you for a while now, and have been assisting you in your endeavors. You may have noticed that your weapons have been emitting an energy lately. That was a gift from us. We have determined that you are worthy of our gifts and more. We can give you many more gifts if you choose to enter into a contract with us. You may have noticed a surpluss of demons roaming the Underdark lately. This is because several Demon Lords, such as Demogorgon, Orcus, Fraz-Urblu, and more, have recently escaped from the Abyss to the Material Plane. We want you and your companions to send them back. If you agree to this, we will gift you more abilities, and you will be a saviour of the Material Plane. So, what way you?"
Caelynn considers her next words carefully. It's obvious that Queen Titania is a being of great power, and she would prefer to stay on her good side. Demon Lords in the Material Plane is certainly a pressing issue and will likely cause a lot of death and destruction if left unchecked. But, sending them back to the Abyss is a daunting task.
"Thank you for these gifts, your majesty. I would be honored to help you with this endeavor. But, with all due respect, are you certain my companions and I are capable of sending these Demon Lords back?"
She gives gives a polite chuckle before she responds in her resonant voice, "You can't do it now. They would destroy you. However, if you gain more power, then you might have a chance. Thwart their desires whenever you can, banish their minions, push them back. Over time, a stream can erode a mountain. Be vigilant, and never stop." The whole court looks towards you expectantly, waiting to see your answer.
