I am closing the recruitment. Thank you to everyone who replied.
All invitations have now been sent.
Should have an update for you tomorrow regarding equipment / magic items.
Expect to begin playing in earnest by the end of the week.
Note:
I am planning on running the game 7 days a week, but if I feel like weekends are unstable with the group, that may change. Tbd.
I will repeat this, but I will say it now: combat will be by group initiative. I hope this encourages communication among players, whether in the game thread in character or ooc or even PMs. I think it allows for execution of more interesting tactics and opportunities for creativity. Additionally, because of the pace of the game, you may not hear back from another player before you feel compelled to post your own action, thereby simulating 'fog of war,' the chaos of real-time combat. If no coherent plan emerges, actions will unfold in a sequence I dictate. They rarely interfere with one another, but I will normally play it as intended or ask a question by pm if actions seem to conflict. Please pm with questions, concerns or just to chat. This is the only game I'm running, so I will try my best to respond in a timely manner.
If you have not yet rolled for starting gold, please do so when you get a chance. I'll let everybody slog through this primer exposition and subsequent action today and see if we can start in earnest on Friday.
You have arrived at the port city of Nyanzaru, here in the western part of the city is the Merchant's Ward, home to the Grand Souk (market). You are surrounded by high end and exotic wares of all sorts. Anything Chult has to offer can likely be obtained here, if one knows where to look, who to ask, and above all, how to pay for it. Among the bustling streets full of buskers and vendors, you manage to find the sign of the shop you seek, a simple elegant bit of calligraphy stating only "The Cartophile".
You turn the handle and push the door open, causing a small bell to ring as you do. Upon entering, you note several glass cases displaying maps of cities across Faerûn and beyond, both modern and some lost to history or legend. Bookcases hold orderly rows of scrolls and volumes of books meticulously arranged. A small figure emerges from a back room, presumably having heard you enter.
"So glad you made it. I've been anxiously expecting you," a well-dressed old gnome greets you. "These parts can be treacherous, but of course you can handle yourself rather well, I'm sure." Catching himself, the Cartophile digresses, "But, where are my manners, I am Anaxi Xephries, and I am pleased to formally offer you the opportunity to locate for me, something very special." Turning to the cases lining the walls of his office, he gestures to the stacks of scrolls, and rows of codices lining the room, "As you may know or can plainly see, I have over my many years collected a not insignificant number of maps. They are my stock in trade, but also my passion. Years before I set up this shop and began trading maps with adventurers across Faerûn, I myself relied on them, placing my very life in the hands of the cartographers who had set pen to paper, by whose stroke I set my course."
He walks around his desk to speak more closely with you, relying on his cane as he limps noticeably, "Of course, that was many years ago. I've seen my share of adventures, but the maps, I can't let them go. And now, I have finally obtained this map." He holds up a sealed tube he carries on his belt. "You may well have heard by this time some of the more outrageous rumors surrounding the barrier peaks, if not then you surely will as you approach them, should you speak to any of the locals. I recommend it, as even the most reliable maps can lose their sharpness with age, natural and unnatural processes reshaping the landscape over time."
"The Sanrach Mountains to the South represent the southern boundary of Chult, and thus Faerûn as a whole, separating it from the lost kingdom of Samarach. Within these mountains, obscured by the Nimbralese illusion magic that hides most ingresses through the mountains, lies a lost city. Few today have heard it's name, and most who have think it a mere legend. The city of Daoine Gloine, home of the glass people. I can see by your expression that you are skeptical as well. That does not concern me. For you see: it is not the city, exactly, that I want you to find; it is the whereabouts of another explorer who sought the to uncover it's secrets. A sage named Kwalish had heard the legends of the glass city and set out in search of it. My great grandfather was a member of that party. They never returned, but my grandfather told me of the expedition when I was a lad. I never knew for sure what the truth of the tale was, but now I have what I believe to be the very map my great grandfather read. I want you to find what happened to him, and maybe, too, the truth of Daoine Gloine."
Returning behind his desk, he pulls out a small leather coin purse and speaks as he searches within it. "I believe in building a solid foundation for any enterprise I embark upon. I know of Aremag's toll for entering the harbor, and crossing the peninsula can be quite taxing in its own ways. Please, take this advance to furnish yourself with whatever you might need in your travels, and get some rest, you've had a long journey. I'll give you a copy of the map first thing in the morning, so you can get an early start. In the mean time, here is a map of the city, my compliments. I highly recommend the public bathhouse, it is the pride of Nyanzaru. And if you should speak to anyone in town, please, don't mention what you are looking for. You can tell them where you are headed, but not what you seek. You may think me a paranoid old fool, but if this map is proof of the journey made by my great grandfather, there may be others just as interested as I in what they may have found."
With that, he hands you 600 gold pieces and a scrap of paper. "I'd recommend these shops, they sell fine gear at prices that won't be beat. Of course, if you're looking for anything special that they don't have, you may well do d it somewhere in town, for a price." With that, the Cartophile wishes you a pleasant evening and retires to the back room.
Ooc: Here is a list of magic shops to choose from. Pick one and buy whatever you like, but the stock of any item is limited to one, thus when you have bought it, it is out of stock - in other words, limit one of each item. Prices are as listed for the shops with links, but for the first shop, no price tags are visible on any item. If you enquire, the shopkeeper will reply, "How much you got?" (Mechanically, you can take 2 items, say it averages to 300gp and you've spent your advance). You'll only have time to visit o e of these shops as they are at the far corners of the city and the sun has set, shops beginning to close their doors soon after. {You get to pick one to shop from, other than shop 1 you can spend however much you wish. If you come up short, feel free to haggle with the merchant, but don't expect too much leeway. These are high end goods at rock bottom prices!}
This is totally experimental on my part, if you love it, hate it or have any suggestions, PM me. I welcome your feedback. The point of it is to give you some magic items that are random, but not totally random and to try to inject some fun and some immersion, but if that explanation is breaking the fourth wall too much, or it just doesn't work for you, well, let me know. After this, things will be more or less standard I think, so if it's off-putting, just bear with m

Out Of Game: Do we each get an extra 600 gold? Also, are we able to visit shops 1 and another of our choice? I'm a little confused on how this works.
Confusion is totally understandable, even expected. The idea is either 2 items from shop one or 600 gold to spend in any of the other shops, in addition to whatever gold left over from what you rolled.
This is in addition to any basic phb equipment, right?
Vernell Grand is a medium height young man with wavy dark hair, and -while naturally pale- a tan from living in Chult for awhile. He’s clearly a battle mage of some sort, judging by the breastplate, shield and staff combination.
He heads to a local shop where he’s been eyeing some items, purchasing them with his suddenly heavy pouch of coin.
(I’ll take the Winged Boots, and Stone of Good Luck)
(Also: 2 wizards, 3 warlock’s, an artificer, a cleric, a ranger, and an unclaimed fighter?)
(OOC: Can we pass on the magic items and just buy normal gear? There is nothing in any of those lists that Leann would want.)
Leann is a beautiful blond woman. She has her long blond hair tied back in a braid currently, as she walks the streets of the port city. She glances around a bit nervously, watching those around her with a bit more care than is usual.
(Waiting on further details until I know the equipment options that she can purchase for normal gear.)
(OOC:So this is 600 gp separate from the level 5 '500gp + 2d10 x 25 gp' startup funds? Which I already spent because wizards. Just want to make sure I'm not double dipping.)
I'll take the potion of greater healing, the ring of mind shielding, and maybe the brooch of shielding from shop 5 (prices on that shop are really low, if they're accurate I could also grab the folding boat and still have funds left over). Would I then be able to use the leftover funds for transcribing more spells?
If the 600 gp is not separate from the startup funds, then I should still be able to at least purchase the two healing potions in shop 5.
Dorian is a wizened old gnome, pale skin dotted with liver spots but still graced with a full head of hair and a bushy but well-kept beard. He is cheerful and curious, and absolutely enamored of the magic items shops, probably irritating at least one shopkeep with his questions and stories.
When you return to the Cartophile, he presents you a map. "This map of Chult is updated. Almost none of the interior was explored at the time of Kwalish's expedition. The route they marked on the original is overlaid. You can follow it as much or as little as you like, but as you approach the mountains to the South, you may notice serious discrepancies. It may not appear possible to pass as they did, but you must find a way to investigate what happened to that party. You may wish to consult with the locals as you near the barrier peaks. I have some local maps in this folio you may wish to consult as you trek South, I will leave them with my cartographer, who will accompany you."
It is a separate, extra 600 gold. You can spend it or keep it or even use it to buy other magical items if you want.
I'm not going to count mundane ammunition, so take more arrows.
If there is some other magic item you want, odds are it's in the city somewhere, and everything has a price, so just ask for it by name and roll DC 8 survival check to find it, DC 10 investigation or arcana to determine authenticity and your choice of persuasion or insight against the vendor for pricing. If you bought a luck stone, you can already apply its effects to these skill check. This elaborate series of rolls can be taken in addition to any other magic shop purchase, you'll just have less money to operate with. If you ask around you'll learn that the odds of buying inauthentic magic items here is exceedingly low, but if you succeed in the roll you'll know it's good. If you fail, there is a 5% chance the item is not exactly what it was claimed to be. I'm leaving this open all day today.
Prices are accurate. Consider it a debt repaid to the Cartophile. This while thing is just a more complicated way of me giving you magic items to start with.
Tomorrow we'll start. I only posted the next mornings action to give you a heads up on the map and allow you a chance to plan you're route.
All right, the two potions, the ring, the brooch and the boat all total up to 336gp and 5 sp, leaving 163 gp and 5 sp for transcribing more spells. He highly regrets not having enough for the bag of holding, but he was just too enamored of the magical workings of the boat to not purchase it when it was brought out for inspection.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Huarache Lights is a tall, orange-furred Tabaxi with a red scarf and a robotic alpaca at his side, as well as a strange metal rod clipped to his belt. He has a New Zealand accent (I consider Lantan the NZ equivalent), and he is definitely a little eccentric, but overall harmless. Also, Huarache would like to purchase a magic longsword with the common rarity. He needs a cheap longsword that is technically magic, like a Moon-Touched Sword.
