"So is that device around still or was it destroyed?"
Chill knows items can be imbued with magic but how such things are done he doesn't know or understand. But he can help look and he can climb walls to check rooms that have gaping holes in front of then.
"I believe, Chill, that the device that almost killed us all is one of the devices Macreadus created." says Krom examining the blueprints "One of the devices on this blueprint is very similar."
"Let's get all those blueprints, including the one with the tiny man of clay, and get outside before something else explode and completely destroy the cabin."
“Macreadus stated that the device should be inert now, and should not pose any danger. He was surprised that the device still had some residual energy left, and that is what hit us. So… I guess, we should be able to figure out how this device works without worrying that it will kill us.”

"Personally I would like it if none of us bothered with the blasted things. I would rather not nearly die again." Rekuberk mutters as he stands as far from anything that he can't make out the use of.
Rhogar examines the clay figure and ascertains that it is a dead homunculus. He doubts there is any way to get it to function again.
Krom still holds the gyroscope. It didn't technically explode as no damage to the cabin occurred. A burst of residual radiant energy emitted from it. It does now appear to be inert.
Krom inspects the device and the plans and is sure he knows what is wrong. The device has a design flaw, obviously. Krom concludes that the device’s rings are unable to contain the magical energy that the core puts out. A third ring must be attached to the device, and this new ring must have runes like those that appear on the other two rings. To craft a third ring, a quarter-pound of metal must be melted down in a fire and recast using smith’s tools, then inscribed with runes by someone with a steady hand. Finally, the device must be modified to accommodate the third ring, using either smith’s tools or tinker’s tools. Krom is sure he can complete the modification process in a few hours.
Krom could certainly use his Artisan's Blessing to craft the ring and use Fabricate along with the smith's tools to inscribe the runes. Another Fabricate spell and smith's tools could be used to modify the gyroscope and attach the third ring.
Or you can roll a couple dexterity checks with the smith's tools (Dex plus Proficiency bonus)
"I'm confident that I will be able to fix and improve this device. The process will take a few hours, but it can be done. In the meanwhile, please do not let anything or anyone disturb my work." says Krom with a big smile on his face. "In honour of Macreadus, I will do this process in his workshop. We will finish this together." says Krom hoping that the spirit of Macreadus can hear him.
Krom takes the device into Macreadus's workshop and, gathering the material necessary for the process, starts invoking Moradin's Blessing. The runes on Krom's smith's tools glows bright red as the dwarf carefully craft the third ring. After one hour of work, as the ring is completed, Krom chanting an hymn of creation (Fabricate)uses his tools to inscribe the runes. The dwarf, as the process is completed, takes a few moments to inspect his work. Krom nodding to himself as he does not find any flaws and murmuring a prayer to Moradin, continues his work. Krom carefully takes the device and chanting, once again an hymn of creation (Fabricate), uses his smith's tools, still glowing from Moradin's Blessing, to modify the device and attach the third and final ring.
"It is done!" says Krom as he examines the device.
"Good thing she can't see this," Rhogar idly murmured after checking out the fallen homunculus, then turned to really pay attention to everyone else. Distracted, it took him a few moments to catch up, but eventually he's eyeing the gyroscope in Krom's hands with narrowed eyes and low grumbling. "I... am of two minds with the device. But if nothing else, if it can help us in what may be an inevitable confrontation with the goddess, then... risks will need to be taken. So, I trust you have things well in hand, Master Krom." He said just prior Krom getting to work.
With that, and with the understanding that the process would take hours, Rhogar would stick around the 1st hour to take a short rest off to the side, but look on interest during that time. After which, the Bronze largely stays just outside on the landing to keep an eye on the Axe Beaks, and on any other trouble that might approach the cabin until called back inside with the good news.

"I am saddened that Copper's friend is dead. At some point I hope we return to Bryn Shander and I can tell him the news. But if we can set his spirit free that will be of some comfort to Copper I would think. I'm sure Macreadus would want Copper to know what happened.
"I have no need to rest. I will climb to the roof and keep watch in case anything approaches."
Before Krom starts he gives him the smith tools and tinker tools he found earlier.
"I don't know how to use any of this stuff, perhaps it will help you in your work."
Its nearly 3 hours of work for Krom to wield his magic and work the smith tool's to complete the necessary steps to add the third ring to the gyroscope. The plans call it the Summer Star and after Krom had attuned to it he understands that he can, as an action, cast the control weather spell from it, without the need for him or the Summer Star to be outdoors.
Rekuberk moves away as Krom works on the thing, not distrusting Krom or the Magic used but instead the device that had exploded with .again that had almost killed them.
"This device, this Summer Star can control the weather within 5 miles. As long as I maintain concentration, I will be control the temperature, the wind and the precipitation levels. The changes are not going to be instantaneous, but even if I lose concentration, it will take time to return to the previous conditions." says Krom explaining to the group the properties of the Summer Star "It will not end the Frostmaiden's Eternal Winter, but it can fight it. At least temporarily." After finishing his explanation, Krom, touching the Summer Star, focuses his will and starts controlling the weather. "I'm ready to continue towards Reve's End as soon as you are."
(@DM Krom will try to control the weather to stage 4 / 5 Temperature avoiding to reduce the temperature too much as we do not want avalanches or natural disasters, stage 1 Wind and stage 1 Precipitation.)
Presumably called in with the end of Krom's work, Rhogar listened with rapt attention. But whereas Krom is quick to make use of the device, the Bronze still looked pensive following the revelation. After a few moments though, he shakes his head dismissing some idle concerns, before regarding Krom and the rest with a smile. "To Revel's End then! We should make decent time thanks to the device, and may make for a Good Omen if word spreads of the calm weather always accompanying us wherever we should go." He said with a chuckle.

Krom concentrated on the device and cast the spell within it. In 10 minutes the temperature began to rise as he began to change the weather in the immediate vicinity. Krom also noticed something else.
He saw, and felt, that the device had gone inert. There was no more power left within it. The device worked, as intended, but it seems it was a single use device. This item was not going to defeat the eternal winter of Auril, even if just for a small area at a time.
As you gather your belongings and prepare to leave the cabin for your next destination you notice another strange thing. On a pile of snow in one of the corners letters begin to be spelled out and you can soon read a message.
Thank you.
Macreadus
It seems you have indeed set Macreadus' spirit free.
A moment late Chill, Krom and Kazri have a vision that flashes through their minds.
Chill, Krom, Kazri
A rose, gold, and violet colored dawn blazes over the horizon as the voice of a god fills your mind.
"Brave ones, I thank you for your help in freeing Macreadus' spirit from the Border Ethereal. He was, and ever will be, my servant and you have aided him. Chill, you sought to help him even though he was a stranger, taking upon the mission of bringing the aid from my temple. Kazri, you agreed to help him when you went to the Border Ethereal even though you were there only moments and drawn back to this plane and Krom you corrected the errors in his device. Your direct and measurable aid freed my servant. Take upon you my blessings."
Chill, Krom and Kazri you each gain a supernatural gift; Blessing of the Morninglord. You gain 10 temporary hit points each day at dawn.
Krom stops as he notices that the device has gone inert. "Unfortunately, Rhogar, the Good weather will not accompany us wherever we go, the Summer Star only worked once, there is no more magical energy inside it." He turns around and as soon as he notices the message on the snow he adds "But, by using it here, the spirit of Macreadus has been freed. Even if for a brief moment, Macreadus's invention managed to fight Auril's influence, so there is still hope my friends, this Eternal Winter can be defeated, we can bring back the sun to Icewind Dale." As he finishes to say those words, he almost lets go of his war hammer as the vision flashes through his mind. After a moment Krom turns towards the sun and bowing murmurs "Thank you for your blessing Morninglord. We will defeat this Eternal Winter." The dwarf then, after carefully putting back into his pack the Summer Star, finishes to gather his belongings and readies himself to continue his travel.
Rhogar, though taken aback by the news, soon after nodded in acceptance of the news. And yet, just prior to the note's discovery, the bronze dragonborn started rubbing his chin, considering possibilities to perhaps empower or further fix the device. With talk of Macreadus being freed however, his gaze returns to the cabin again, to thoughts of the discovery found within it, and the hope spawned from a few determined souls seeking to save the region.
All in all, it's enough to bring a smile to the Dragonborn's face. "We will finish what you started, Macreadus. Rest assured." He quietly promised even despite traditional dragonborn views strongly opposing such assurances without guarantee of success. Afterwards, he turns back to the others, and though touch confused if able to see the reactions of the trio's vision, any question is culled in favor of focus on final preparations for the long journey ahead of the group.
