I have an old character I played a long time ago, an Elven battle mage obsessed with starting his own kingdom. He was an incredibly fun character to play, but I only got to play him for a hand full of sessions (1 on 1 sessions with a friend of mine who was learning to DM). I would really like to dig into this character again, and I think PbP would be a half decent way of doing it. I have a full backstory and everything, but I didn't want to make a sheet up until I learned how you wanted me to roll and what not to fit your DMing style. the general idea is he will be a fighter (battle master)/ Warlock (hexblade). I think he'd do best as a one on one character because he wants to be the boss in every situation, and that isn't really right to do to a party. I know it's a long shot but I appreciate your consideration.
I might be interested in running this. I already run a PbP campaign on Discord and use the Avrae bot for any dice rolls/combat. My DM style is fairly adaptable depending on who I am playing with and what they are looking for. You can expect a lot of homebrew and some difficult encounters (might use Roll20 for battle maps every now and then).
My question is, what is your expectation? You want to build a kingdom, okay, but what is your starting point and how would your character start building their kingdom? Also would be great if I could have a look at that backstory to get a good idea of the character.
I'm not making any promises here, but I am interested in the concept.
I love homebrew and difficult fights, I like feeling like there's real stakes on the line. And I suppose the exact way I would go about starting my kingdom would differ slightly from setting to setting, depending on government styles and the level of magic in the campaign and such. But I think no matter what the majority of the first "arc" (Idk if that's a good term), would be starting small, recruiting and strengthening a small group of companions, maybe a small mercenary band or the like. Then begin taking marginal steps forward using a mix of combat, intrigue, and adventuring (and there spoils there of) to grow my influence and strength. I really like the idea of playing a full rag-to-riches story, with a kind of dark and gritty tone. The exact steps would be really story and setting dependent, but Samisell is totally willing to do whatever it takes to advance his plans. He's a true tactician too, his steps would be measured and assessed to gain the greatest advantage. He's just as likely to ransom off the princess as he is to turn her in to her father, depending on which will benefit him most.
as for the backstory I have one typed up but it's has some setting dependent stuff I'm not sure would still apply, but I'll tidy it up a bit and send it to ya
I was thinking the same, rags-to-riches. You start out with basically nothing and the first part of the adventure will basically be survival and getting yourself supplies and allies. From there it is up to you how to advance. You could build yoir own group of mercenaries or perhaps join a guild and work your way up.
Arcs would basically be you setting a goal and then deciding which steps to take to reach that goal. Then we go through those as you prep for whatever encounter will be at the end. For instance, you could set a goal to murder a specific individual who has been getting in your way. You take steps to learn information about them, turn their friends against them, craft a special poison and then go out and perform the murder or perhaps have someone else do it for you depending on the amount of influence and power you have at that point.
I was thinking about starting at either level 3 or 5. That will give you some abilities and resources, but not too much. I usually ban Variant Humans and instead give all players 1 free Feat at level 1. Character Creation can be discussed once I have read your characters Backstory.
