Milo and Lupe
Hearing no verbal response, Milo takes the snake's actions as an answer. The halfling raises his trusty club, calling on the magic within. "Shillelagh!" He stands next to the snake and swings with magical force.
Lupe rushes in after, snapping at the snake with its jaws.
Just as the snake finished coming out of the tree and getting ready hunt its prey, Milo's club finds its mark and strikes it. It's body moves to adjust itself after the blow only to have the dire wolf bite it as well. The snake moves it's body about trying to get itself in a less vulnerable position.
Milo looks to the spirit inside and conjures a bear spirit totem 10 ft away. (Within 20 ft of all party members.) Emboldened by the spirit, he swings his magically imbued weapon at the snake.
Lupe takes another bite at the snake as well.
Bonus Action: Spirit Totem (all allies within 30ft of the totem gain 7 temporary hit points and have advantage on strength checks and saves)
The club slams down on the head of the snake, causing it to go still just for a moment brief enough for for Lupe's near simultaneous bite to latch onto its neck, ripping it to shreds. The snake dies and while doing so loosens it's grapple on Menttal. Menttal collapses from exhaustion, hanging on to life by a thread.

oog... You went through the 60HP of the snake like a hot knife through butter. You each get 150 XP
Milo nods. "Well, if you are alright," he turns to Donnar, "and you are prepared, we should continue on."
The halfling looks out towards the forest, in the direction they were traveling. He sends a telepathic message to Lupe. 'Go on ahead. We're right behindyou.'
Lupe heads in the direction Milo indicated. The druid follows 20 feet behind.
"You know what they say. If you STAY prepared, there's no reason to GET prepared!" Donnar responds, and continues following Milo. This time choosing to keep his scimitars drawn.
The afternoon continues with the three heroes making their way through the remainder of this quadrant of the forest. Zig-zagging back and forth across the main path and around trees and through bushes. They find and follow a trail that winds its way North and then East for more than an hour. The vegetation is very think. No other trails are seen leaving the trail they have been following. Even Lupe has had to join the others on the main trail. The heroes walk along in single file. Marching order isn't relevant.
After another 20 minutes of following the trail, the heroes spot something funny/suspicious on the ground in front of them (passive perception by Milo and Menttal). It's a pit, covered in branches and leaves. It's hidden pretty well, except on the near side a clear hole is seen. Peering down, the remains of a bear can be seen, empaled by spikes at the bottom, nearly 20' down. The smell of decay is in the pit as each hero pokes their head in to have a look at the pit.
The pit is cut perfectly to the width between the thick vegetation on either side of the trail. By shaking the branches or even pulling them off if you wanted, it can be seen the bit is 10' across. There's no other way around other than to turn around and go back the way you came.
Except for the rushing sound of the wind through the tall pines and an occasional woodpecker hard and work somewhere in the forest, nothing seems out of ordinary. Closer inspection of the trail does show that there has been traffic on this side of the pit, the floor of dried pine needles and leaves is disturbed in a manner consistent with a four-legged animal. On the other side of the pit, the trail appears undisturbed. It's clear that the bear approached the pit from the heroes' side (by the hole in the pit covering and tracks) and that nothing has been on the other side of the pit for quite some time (undisturbed and amount of time this bear has had to decay).
Conveniently, there is a large brach hanging over the middle of the pit, about 15' off the ground. However, with Milo's keen eyes, on closer inspection, the other end of the branch isn't actually connected to the trunk of the tree. It's suspended in place by very thin vines, made to look like a solid branch of the tree. The base of the branch resting on top of a knot on the tree, likely where the branch was originally cut. This looks to be another trap if the branch was to be used to hang or swing from, the branch would break free of the vines an it and it's victim would fall into the pit.
Milo turns to his companions, "We must cross. There may be more dangers on the other side, and we were tasked with ridding the forest."
He crouches at the edge of the pit, inspecting the trap. "Looks like whatever made this trap hasn't been around for a while. I'll check on the far side." Standing from his crouched position, Milo looks over his shoulder to his companions, saying "Stand back."
His skin begins shifting as his armor and equipment begin to meld into his body. For a brief moment, Milo appears to be a formless mass. As quickly as the change began, a giant wolf spider stands in the space previously occupied by Milo, his checkered scarf still tied around his neck (or abdomen on the spider's body.)
Milo skirts along the wall of the pit, using his spider climb ability to stay along the wall.
The inside of the pit looks as previous described with regards to dimensions. Closer inspection leads to new information. Some spikes are broken. The walls of the pit have scratches from the various hands, paws, or hooves that have attempted to get out of the pit over some period of time. Successful or unsuccessful attempts, it's now known. The dead bear is smelly, but does that bother a spider?

The spider fixes as many of its eyes as it can on Donnar, as Milo sends a telepathic message. "I can cleanse the meat with magic, it would make a great feast. Should I retrieve the bear?"
Lupe tries looking for a way around the pit on foot.

When the sack attack, Menttal jumps back, spooked. He gains his footing an tries to impale the snake with his rapier.
Attack: 21 Damage: 3
Menttal's rapier takes a big gouge out of the snake. The snake counters with it's own attack against Menttal:
Attack: 24 Damage: 14
That snake strikes out against Menttal and wraps its huge body around him - grappling him...
On next turn make an athletics check to escape (DC = 16).

By the time Donnar is back on his feet and has drawn both of his scimitar's, the snake is wrapped around Menttal.
"Why you.. WE are not food! YOU ARE!" He roars, and charges forward into melee range hacking at the snakes body with both of his weapons.
Attack: 7 Damage: 5
Attack: 24 Damage: 4
What can one say other than Donnar tore into that snake causing massive damage. Yet, it still hold firmly onto Menttal in its grapple.
