Alder has made most of the trip in silence, merely moving alongside the others and keeping watch. He still finds himself on edge from the strangeness of everything, and unsure of what to make of the odd bite marks he saw on Ireena's neck. Isn't that what vampires did to people? He felt he remembered something like that from childhood stories. The appearance of the strange man in front of the procession and sudden warnings from Sandu and Valerie elicits a scowl as he moves to draw forth the aged, plain axe from beneath his coat.
Alder - your Perception check yields the same results as Valeries earlier check:
As you glance around the dark clouds above you believe you may have seen something fleetingly. Equally it could be your mind playing tricks on you.
Sandu - You are able to find a number of barrels off to the side of the street, can I get a Stealth check to determine how successfully you have managed to conceal yourself.
Coffin Holders - At the forewarning of incoming enemies you instinctively place the coffin on the floor and adopt defensive stances.
Valerie - Pink 'Crusader Shield' Token (Closest to enemies)
NPCs:
Ireena - Dark Pink 'Love Book' Token
Ismark - Light Brown 'Swords' Token
Items:
Coffin - Diamond Dark Brown 'Coffin' Token
Monsters:
Zombie 'Man' - Dark Orange 'Skull' Token
Swarm of Bats - Black 'Bat' Token (x4)
((Feel free to jostle your characters around a little - I have gone by a vague idea of where people may be.
In terms of initiative order, to answer your question Furujiru - it would be by modifier, then choice if tied. As such it would be Ioben - Sandu - Valerie))
As the party ready themselves for the pending combat a number of bats begin to fly directly at Valerie. They swarm about her attempting to find a way to land a bite on the unarmoured portions of her body.
Bat Attacks:
Bat Swarm #1 - Bite Attack: 15 Damage: 5
Bat Swarm #2 - Bite Attack: 23 Damage: 4
Struggling against the overwhelming number of tiny pests, a couple manage to get past Valerie's defences dealing 4 piercing damage.
Baern - You watch in horror as your companion is overwhelmed by swarms of tiny bats. It is time for you to act - it is your turn.
Baern, not hiding the fact that he is legitimately terrified at this scene, reaches for the holy symbol he has been fiddling with quite a bit, closes his eyes briefly, and does something he has never really done before until recently; he prays. His eyes suddenly open wide as he can feel a bit of warmth from the holy symbol and a slight tingle through his body. He somehow instinctively knows that the prayer was actually heard.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Ireena dashes to the assistance of Valerie, "Get off her! Get off her!" she screeches as she lashes out twice with her shortsword.
Attack: 14 Damage: Unable to parse dice roll.
Attack: 17 Damage: Unable to parse dice roll.
Seriously started having issues with the dice roller here - 5
Unfortunately, Ireena is rattled by the appearance and sheer volume of bats - her first attack is wild and does not make contact, her second attack manages to find purchase and deals 3 slashing damage.
As the bats fly toward the group, Ioben draws his shortbow, nocking an arrow and drawing. He quickly sights the bats attacking Ireena and release his arrow.
As Ioben's arrow whizzes through the air the swarm of bats fly around erratically, just as the arrow looks like it will miss it's intended target it strikes true. A number of dead bats lie on the floor now - one of the swarms is down to half the size it initially was.
Sandu - you are currently hidden amongst the barrels cluttering the street. It is your turn.
Sandu felt strange. That was quite the understatement to make here in Barovia but he knew there were two things different about him. First he felt some sort of slight warmth coursing through his body, driving out the cold in ways his cloak did not. But more suprising to Sandu was that, for the first time in his life, his fight-or-flight instinct was not immediately trumped by the flight response. Maybe the former had something to do with the latter. Or perhaps it was something else. Something Sandu was not yet ready to admit, least of all to himself.
Regardless, the time for action was now. Though he still did not know what it meant, he knew what to say: 'Pleacã!'
A streak of purple emerged from his hand. Sandu expected the heat to drain from his fingers but the inner warmth he was experiencing countered it, keeping a precarious balance between cold and warmth. He focused his gaze. The energy sped towards the swarm of bats surrounding Valerie, hoping to strike at the very heart of the swarm.
After firing, Sandu moved back so that he found himself a couple of feet further away from the animals and crouched behind the crate. Habits do die hard after all.
Actions - Eldritch Blast targeting the swarm of bats attacking Valerie - Bless 1 + Attack: 11 Damage: 5 - Move to the left so he is between the leftmost barrel and crate and hides behind it.
OOC: still loving this map style we've got going. ^^ Btw, anyone else having an issue with DNDBeyond? I did not get any notification mail the past day and a half so I had to check in manually here on the thread.
Valerie pushes Ireena back and stands between the man and her.

In anticipation of the bats, Sandu looked around him for places he could easily duck and cover behind or under.

"Might I suggest we put the coffin down? Circle up and protect it as best we can. Either that, or we move quickly to get some better cover."
(That's why I suggested only two people on the coffin, so it would only take two people's Actions to put it down. Now it takes 4 Actions.)
