Glide alerts Krinix to the smell, who keeps it to himself for the moment. Although he senses a possible danger approaching, he strangely doesn’t want to abandon the room. Finding the inscription had electrified him. Perhaps his dreams had more truth in them than even he had supposed...
Can Glide fit down one of the gutters? Meanwhile Krinix will look for a hatch (but not open it if he finds one) and stay aware of the approaching scent, trying to determine what it could signify.
Qiran follows the others down into the unearthed space. While he did not doubt its importance to the scholars, he was having a hard time seeing any practical usage for it.
"Share the combined light throughout? What do we group think it means? Magical nexus here, empowers those unusual trees?"

Krinix: “I think it’s the other way around, the trees are more of a repository for the spell. Still don’t know what it does though. Something to do with light, I’m sure. Can you help me find a hatch or a door under this rubbish? This can’t be all there is in this room.”
Qiran considers Krinix's suggestion. It wasn't a bad idea, his interpretation of the runes. For a dragonborn he was pretty smart. Using his boot and staff to clear some of the dirt and debris, he searches for a way further 'in'.

Krinix's familiar Glide is able to fit easily into the gutters, and that's definitely where the smell is coming from. A skittering sound can now be heard by Glide, who now conveys a feeling of danger.
Meanwhile, Qiran easily uncovers the handle for the trap door, not that it was really needed. It looks as if something has gnawed its way through the rotting wood, creating a few foot-sized holes and one particularly large hole that was covered up by some debris that was stuck together with a dried mucus. The stench of rotting flesh comes roiling up from deep below, as well as the sound of far-away running water.

The full weight of the situation comes crashing in on Krinix. He fully realizes now that the discovery linked to Srossa had clouded his judgment, that he was pushing his luck, and that something bad was about to happen.
”I think we are in danger,” he announces. “Something nasty made that hole, and I think it’s coming for us. We should climb out, now!”
He casts minor illusion to create the sight of a blazing fireball that fills the large hole, hoping it might slow down whatever is down there, maybe give it pause for a few precious moments. He will climb out of the pit, not wanting to be in this confined space when the thing emerges. And he instructs Glide to bravely go down and try to lay eyes on whatever is coming. Glide should move quickly away from the hole and hopefully go unnoticed on the side of whatever is down there, hopefully able to see the source of the skittering and the stench.
The stench of decay filled Qiran's concave nose, causing his creatures to wrinkle up in disgust. Where there is death, there is life. Animals must be getting in somewhere.
Evidently, Krinix had the same thought, but was reacting with the terror of a child who been caught stealing from the creche's stores.
"Calm, my draconian friend. It is likely just some water-rat, startled by our noise-making."
More annoyed than concerned, Qiran taps his fingers on his spellbook, mutters a few words, and arcane fire begins to dance along his fingers. He pays no head to the illusory fireball Krinix was conjuring.

As the sparks of magic fill the chamber, both from Qiran and Krinix's spells, the three coloured crystals suddenly spark to life with a POP POP!, lighting up briefly and trembling before a snap like a static discharge makes the dust that had settled on the platform blow away. The three crystals begin glowing red, blue, and yellow. The platform begins to move, the circular rings grinding at first, then smoothly gliding like a carousel.
That's all that happens, however. The crystals are glowing and the platform is moving. It seems that the light from the illusion and the arcane fire acted like a pilot light, starting this ancient machine, though it's clearly missing something.
Just as that happens, the source of the skittering noises begins to show itself. 8 horrid little grublike creatures, about the size of a cat each, come scurrying into view. They're not quite upon the group yet, but they can be seen through the holes in the trap door. They have many little spindly legs and a vicious, circular mouth lined with razor sharp little teeth for boring into flesh; and it seems they have become aware of a potential meal.
Glide can have an initiative too, in case it becomes relevant: 7
Krinix stops his climbing with a muttered curse, sticking with the rest of his team. He does shout, though,
“Jules, we have a problem down here!”
Brandishing his crystal, he casts the sleep spell on the little monsters: 31
This spell sends creatures into a magical slumber. Roll 5d8; the total is how many hit points of creatures this spell can affect. Creatures within 20 feet of a point you choose within range are affected in ascending order of their current hit points (ignoring unconscious creatures).
Starting with the creature that has the lowest current hit points, each creature affected by this spell falls unconscious until the spell ends, the sleeper takes damage, or someone uses an action to shake or slap the sleeper awake. Subtract each creature's hit points from the total before moving on to the creature with the next lowest hit points. A creature's hit points must be equal to or less than the remaining total for that creature to be affected.
(In PBP I like to post my move for the round whenever, seems to help move things along, but let me know if you’d rather I wait for my turn, can do that too)
(Just a pointer - I have run one and am currently running another campaign via Play-by-Post, and combat can drag on for quite some time if a strict order is followed. In my games I attempt to use grouped initiative as much as possible, and due to the nature of Play-by-Post games, some players preemptively post their actions so the game can continue to flow even if order isn’t strictly followed - DMs usually apply what characters have posted in the order the initiative detailed anyways.)
Chroma, having expected creatures to inhabit this long-abandoned settlement, is quick to react to the smell and sound of approaching enemies. She quickly positions herself between the horrendous insects and the rest of the party, prepared to take the brunt of the attack. The strange crystals and intricate mechanisms were more of a passing interest to her - she was certain the bookish Krinix or Qiran would have more of an idea of what it could be, but for now, her primary occupation was to prevent as much harm from befalling her allies as she could.
(OOC - are the insects distributed over one specific area, or are they approaching from all areas of the chamber?)

(Yeah, I'm starting to get that XD thank you. That does make a lot of sense. )
The creatures seem to be coming from three different places; through the gutters on either side of the room, and through the holes in the old door. Chroma can easily see 5 coming for the door while one is coming through a gutter on the left and 2 are using the right.
Before the creatures move into attacking range, Krinix finishes his spell. The crystals continue to pop and crackle, lighting up again, seeming to react to magicks.
Sleep effect roll :31
the crystals don't seem to siphon any of the magic away, but they certainly become animated when near it.
Krinix successfully knocks the creatures attempting to come through the gutters unconscious, and 2 of the ones approaching Chroma immediately stop moving. Just 3 are left advancing.
