"You bet that hairy-son-of-a-dozen-snakes-monkey didn't kill himself. He was surely following us since we left Ishi Ammah and found himself a great chance to take advantage of my stupidity. Either way, he's dead now, but he was no more than a mosquito. It's the backstabbing viper and his master who truly share the blame. For their sake, they'd better be dead before we return to Ishi Ammah." It's clear that Varielky is still angry.
"The two followed us since the Beauty Pageant, as they told us. Their master - Abodolla and his master the head of the Amazighs - they are the ones responsible for the poisoning at the games. As Benita and I survived, they wanted to finish the job. We noticed our followers back at Ishi Ammah, but we thought we shook them off. We let our guard down."
"I woke up and spotted Benita wandering off outside, undressed. I misjudged the situation there and rushed off with nothing more than the bed's sheet. I didn't even think to take my weapons then, and the chimps found it a great opportunity to complete their mission. I have sinned, priest, but the gods still forgave me and sent me the sword to fight." She draws the blade from it's scabbard to emphasize her words. She takes a moment to try looking at her forehead through her reflection on the sword's blade before sheathing it back.
"I asked Benita to punish me, but she chose not to do it. I don't feel right yet, however. Our belief may not be identical but it does share some resembelance. Could you help me repent? Punish me somehow. My actions must have consequences." You can tell she's serious about it.
Yes, my thoughts on setting the watches is that we draw cards lowest to highest , 1st through 4th. In the end we all ought to be getting the same number if watches at each time period.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
(I'm not sure when exactly Dolkum says the above, but Varielky will reply when she hears it (if she hears it, ignore if not).)
"Cards? There's no need. I'll take the third watch. If we take two watches in pairs, that should be two bells worth of time for each pair. As long as we're not exhausted from riding the carriage the entire day, that should provide us with enough sleep each."
(Still waiting for Ednyss' response btw, but here's Varielky's response to the stuck carriage.)
Although she's uncomfortable about it, there's nothing else to do. Varielky doffs her armour and weapons and tries to carry them to the other side. Usually, it wouldn't bother her, but she's still embarrassed about that night and you can see her cheeks and ears turning a slightly darker shade of purple. She doesn't say anything though and raises all her equipment above her head as she crosses the river. (Is an Athletics check required? 13) Once she's on the other side, she lays her stuff on the ground and crosses the stream back to the other side (Athletics? 8). She then stands behind the carriage, ready to push it from behind. "Don't just stand there, come and help me. If all of us push, along with the horses pulling, we should be able to get it out." (Does that require Athletics? 7)
(OOC: The water is only perhaps 1’ deep. It’s usually a trickle, not requiring a bridge. No athletics required to cross it, it’s just difficult terrain. But yes athletics for everyone to try to pull.)
To Dolkum's question, Mittens cryptically says as he looks for in the distance, "I saw an old friend of mine a few days ago..."
When the carriage grinds to a halt, Mittens tosses Pooky up on top of the carriage before he positions himself to help push. Up top, Pooky spins in place slowly, looking for any signs of danger about them.
Down below, Mittens says once everyone is in position, "We all good? Yes? Ok, one, two, three!" At three, he heaves with all the strength that his tiny body has to offer .
Pooky Perception: 18
Mittens will give advantage on someone else's athletics check.
Ednyss sighs when he hears Varielky's story. She is right that their faiths have some resemblance to each other and he understands a bit of where she is coming from. "Child," he says with a patience that can only stem from age and experience. "Repentance can only come from within. If you wish me to help you achieve a state of mind where you are more connected with your mistakes, then I can oblige, but I cannot repent for you. That is something that must be done alone." He places a hand on Varielky's arm as he continues, "You made a mistake in forgetting your weapons that night. You made a mistake in letting your guard down. But if the gods have chosen to forgive you for your mistakes, then who are we to doubt their judgment. I understand your desire to have a consequence for your actions and I will assist in your repentance if you wish it, but you will have to guide my hand as I am unfamiliar with the traditions of your people." Stepping back he waits for a response from Varielky.
(Stuck Carriage)
Hopping out of the carriage, Ednyss assists the pushing of the carriage using some divine might to aid his traditional strength. When Mittens reaches the end of his countdown, he heaves with all his might attempting to get the carriage out of its position.
"From within, you say? Perhaps you're right. The one who taught me all which I know of the gods said something similar often. 'Until you can truly show remorse, sincerely, without needing me to tell you that you have wronged, I will guide you.' Is about what he would say on such occasions. The idea was to use pain as an indicator. Once my penitence was greater than my physical pain, and I'd no longer feel the pain, I knew I was in the right state of mind. Until then, comfort would be sought in prayer. Since then, whenever I can't shake the feeling of wrongness off me by simple prayers, I'd use ongoing pain as an indicator. When I asked Benita to hit me, I wanted to see if my remorse is sufficient, but I couldn't tell from what she did. I tried my usual methods, but it seems my body is already used to those forms of pain. I was thinking maybe you'd have an idea. It needs to be something strong, yet not enough to actually hurt me. Usually, I'd sit on my knees for long periods of time, but it feels like my legs are getting used to that. Another way, when the days are cold enough, would be to sit naked in the snow, covered by it to the point it hides more than my clothes would. That doesn't seem like something I would try anytime soon though." Varielky stopped to listen to Ednyss' response, as well as to remember things of the past. The two ways she described were of better options. Veleif would also have her run until her legs felt like they shattered or sometimes pain through starvation. The worst by far was that time when she was lashed. That one was when she really crossed a red line. The foolish little girl she was back then, it's hard to imagine they're the same person, years apart.
(OOC: Just for the record, Varielky is not a masochist. She doesn't enjoy doing this, it's just the way she was taught. Some people punish themselves emotionally, she does so physically.)
(OOC: feel free to continue your dialogues in past tense while also posting regarding the below).
You all lend a shoulder and try to push or to pull the carriage out of its predicament, while Amistan uses Ranger magic to attempt to shift the water’s course slightly, but it is slow going. You’ve been trying for 10 minutes to get the carriage unstuck. Ednyss, bathed in divine light, using his guidance, and with Mittens’ help unifying your efforts, is able to push the carriage most of the way across, but a rear wheel has now sunk down into a pothole and you’re stopped once again. That’s when Pooky motions for Mittens’ attention and points upwards to the skies around him, while Adelfi calls out, “Be silent, stop! Be silent!” and whispers, “listen.”
And...you hear nothing. Other than the roar of the waves against the shore and the insistent breeze. But, Mittens also notices what Pooky had brought to his attention: all the seagulls, which have circled you throughout the day, have stopped screeching -- in fact, not a single one is to be seen.
And now, Pooky sees it first from his vantage point atop the carriage: through a break in the bluff which separates the road from the beach, and through which the stream which has rendered you motionless empties to the ocean, you see something getting closer, under the swells just beyond the beach. It is wide, flat, and pink-orange, creeping up under the breaking waves. There is a profoundly bracing, almost overwhelming odor of seaweed, reminiscent of the Docks in Ishi Ammah on the days when the biggest fishing boats came back with an enormous haul, which blows in from the water. And you hear a distant clicking sound like locusts caught in a temple recess, leaping up and flapping against the walls, pops and scrapes as an accompaniment to the pulsing surf and steady sea breeze. Adding to the counterpoint, a growing buzz as more and more large black beach flies are drawn to...whatever it is under the water. Adelfi sprints to the head of the bluff, sand flying with each step, dreadnaughts trailing behind him, where he cocks his head, purses his lips, squints, then dashes back.
“Keep them from the horses,” he hisses, pointing to sea, readying his bow and frowning deeply. Flint and Wad insist that Tuff and Granophyre reenter the passenger compartment, keep the doors shut, and be ready, while they, Flint and Wad, lift their weapons, as do Amistan and Benita.
And then, you can clearly see them as a wave breaks, and they emerge from the water in a long line: dozens of Huge King Crabs, each of their shells over 1 foot in diameter, with arms extending almost 5 feet tip-to-tip completely splayed out. They seem to be moving purposefully directly toward you. Behind them, farther out to sea but closing -- are more crabs, and while the water makes it hard to tell, they look bigger than the Huge ones. Much bigger.
Movement through the line of horses is difficult terrain and dangerous to pass through, because the smell is making the horses snort and whinny, and they might kick or bite. The horses can’t move the carriage in its current position without your help, so they are essentially grappled.
Varielky will don her shield and draw the Dreyen sword. "I don't enjoy fighting wild animals. There's nothing to be said for them, Hallvala is not their destination. I did vow to protect you all, however." She looks at the area, considering something while moving towards the sea. She then points with her sword at the narrow place where the river flows through. "Unless they plan to climb, they'll come through there. It's good for us, however, as it's narrow. We don't want to get surrounded. Let's fight them there. Maybe if we kill one or two the rest will scatter away."
((Sorry, my internet decided to crap out on me for a while.))
Seeing the crabs, Mittens says, "They're too far away at the moment for me to do anything about it, so I'm going to push the cart out until they get a bit closer."
With that, he tries heaving upon the cart, helping the horses escape the mire.
16 Ednyss (I’m botting your movement, advancing to help hold a line. You can still post your R1 action along with R2, but don't change your movement action.)
12 Varielky moves forward to U20
9 Mittens tries to push the carriage. The motivated cat pushes it forward 1’ by himself (a minor miracle), but alas, no one else is helping or notices.
Benita, Flint and Wad all close ranks.
Amistan fires off an experimental shot, lines up a pair and takes down two of the King Crabs, pinning them together.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Varielky doesn't enjoy it, but she understands they need to scare the crabs away. She walks forward to meet the crabs and slashes her sword at one of them. Then, she pushes the smashes her shield into another, trying to push it back onto the crabs behind it. She wasn't sure if she could even push it, but hopefully, she could stagger them, at the very least. "Come over here, we don't want them to pass through this point. They greatly outnumber us."
Ednyss nods when Varielky describes her methods of repentance. While it is not necessarily the path that Ednyss chooses, each person has their own way of connecting with the gods and if this worked for the young Varielky, then Ednyss would not challenge that. Before Ednyss responds, he spends some time thinking if anything like this was ever done back in his home or if he knows of any practices that could fulfill Varielky's needs.
Ednyss charges forward with the others and as he trudges through the mud, he summons a spectral shield to help defend the horses and repel some of these crustaceans. He also calls down some divine blessings for Varielky, Dolkum, and himself. Finally, as he closes ranks with Varielky on the opposite side of Dolkum, and steps up to lock shields to prevent the crabs from passing. Meanwhile, he has his spectral shield batter the crustaceans.
Bonus Action: Cast Spiritual Weapon at V27 to attack Crab at V28 Attack: 25 Damage: 6
Move: To T18 (Approaching the Crabs)
(Round 2)
Action: Cast Bless on Varielky, Dolkum, and Ednyss Whenever a target makes an attack roll or a saving throw before the spell ends, the target can roll a d4 and add the number rolled to the attack roll or saving throw.
Bonus Action: Move Spiritual Weapon to V24 (5 Feet in the Air) and repeat the attack on the same crab (or a different crab if the first one is dead) Attack: 18 Damage: 7
Move: T18 --> T20 (Costs 20 Feet because of difficult terrain)
(OOC: Does it say "Dice rolls not available for this section." to anybody else?)
(OOC: Nevermind... The edit seems to have fixed it!)
Panted with exertion, Mittens takes a few steps away from the carriage, taking a breather for a moment before turning his attention towards the incoming swarm of crabs. Eyeing the terrain about him, he shouts out, "I can get a bunch of them once they are a bit closer!" With that, he activates his magical boots and leaps towards the action. While in the air, he performs a gesture, and icy jaws of death clamp down upon one of the crustaceans.
Movement: Move to S18 with the Boots of Leaping ((Ha! I remembered them this time))
Action: cast frostbite on one of the crabs. DC 14 constitution saving throw or take 1 cold damage and have disadvantage on its next attack.
(OOC: these are swarms of crabs. Each small crab image represents 2 or 3 Crabs. Swarms can occupy the same space as another creature or object.)
--From Round 1: Ednyss’ spiritual weapon strikes a swath through the first swarm, and they fall, crackling with energy and exploding. (OOC: Varielky’s request doesn’t conform to any specific ritual Ednyss is aware of and might seem cultish.).
Round 2
19 Dolkum moves forward to U20. His javelin misses, striking the ground and sinking deep into the sand. Its rear half pokes up at an angle over the water.
16 Ednyss' bless begins, and his spiritual weapon shield (pictured in glowing yellow on the map) strikes another swath through the swarm of crawling creatures, which glow and explode. The buzz of the flies increases dramatically as they swarm on the clambake. The first swarm is now at half-strength, and it seems that this spell, of all the attacks your party makes this round, is, by far, having the greatest impact.
12 Varielky walks forward (OOC: and must ready her attack until the swarm arrives, which it does presently) and slashes, her longsword with its red glow hacking off the legs of two Crabs - but she notices that they are resistant to physical attacks, and also her shove has no effect, for a pair of crabs are pushed back while another three advance around her.
9 Mittens casts frostbite and one member of the swarm freezes in place and shatters, but Mittens finds that the other effect of the spell will not work against the swarm.
Amistan, from atop the carriage, looses another arrow, which impales another crab
Flint & Wad advance and ready battleaxes and shields.
Benita advances, readying her scimitar and dagger.
The Giant King Crab Swarms close with you, funneling through the gulley. The much bigger creatures now surface and move faster than the swarms, moving sideways up the gulley, overstepping their smaller relatives. These Gargantuan King Crabs shells are 10’ across, and their entire span with legs outstretched is 30’. Each of their sharp claws are the size of enormous 3 foot-long scissors, and they look capable of grasping any of you by the waist. Their smell is overwhelming, and the flies are like a raucous cloud among you all.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Pfft. This is why I don't like fighting animals." Varielky walks back (U20). "Tiny Warrior, I believe you will be more useful here. Maybe something like what you did back in Lokimorra? Once you get rid of the small ones, I'll deal with the big ones - they seem easier for me to deal with."
Varielky takes the Ready action. If one of the Gargantuan crabs enters her reach, she'll make an attack against them. Attack: 13 Damage: 9 And I forgot Bless. +2
"You bet that hairy-son-of-a-dozen-snakes-monkey didn't kill himself. He was surely following us since we left Ishi Ammah and found himself a great chance to take advantage of my stupidity.

Round 2 results
You’re now situated like so.
Please post Round 3 actions.
DM for Candlekeep Mysteries // Dev Hornd in Curious Critters // Eclipse Faraway in Gallows Dancer
Varielky
Dolkum advances to V21, keeping pace with Varielky, drawing forth his war hammer, and making a 2 handed attack on the nearest crabs...
