Varielky acknowledges back with a nod and lowers her shield and sword, sheathing the sword but the shield remains in her hand. As the sword slides into its scabbard, the light emitted from Varielky's eyes dims and eventually extinguishes. Now, Auger can see the colour of her iris is bright blue. "Risking his life for us was an honourable deed. I respect that. I cannot tell for sure, however, if this person is an honourable warrior or a cunning scoundrel. It pains me that Mittens is gone, the tiny warrior proved courageous since the day I met him." Varielky stays near the dwarves, instead of going back to the campfire, ready to defend those she took an oath to defend in case the man proves hostile.
“Tut, tut. Benita la Cass,” says Granophyre, in his resonant, gravelly basso. “Mittens Toodaloo was far braver than you know, and his journey is just beginning.” Tuff’s head whips around to stare at his master’s. “Yes, Tuff, he spoke to me two nights ago. Late. In Asilah.” To the company, he says, “For the moment, I think the most pressing question is the origin of the sad forms you so cunningly defeated.” He puckers his lips and whistles 3 short notes, and the mercurial sparrow on his head grows its wings and flutters straight up, but pauses, for at that moment, Py returns, and the metallic bird’s head cocks sideways in curiosity.
Py:
Py to Auger: 'It's a temple ruin. The turned undead have fled back to it but fell to dust first. There is a hole in the ground. One or two are coming out every minute. They're massing but not moving. There are also two large animated skeletons: beasts like tigers. They are looking this direction, waiting.'
In his mind Auger communicates with Py. Thank you Py. Does the Dowager believe I can trust these people? Some have been less than friendly.
Out loud Auger says, "This is my friend he is called Py." Probably getting a first look at him what all see is an over-sized Dragonfly form, clearly carved from wood in a smooth grain. If any look closely you can see the seams that show he was assembled from a series of inter-locking pieces.
Addressing Granophyre Auger continues, "I agree, origins of these sad forms are a matter of great importance it appears. During the fighting I sent Py to examine the origins of the walking statues. To see where they are coming from. He says there is a temple ruin a 1/2 mile to the east. The statues returned towards it but fell to dust along the way. At the temple there is some kind of hole in the ground and a few more of the undead rise from it now and then. There is a mass of them up there. They are watching this way. There also appear to be some skeletons of larger beasts."
Still talking to Granophyre, "It appears I have underestimated the dangers that rise in the night. Would you mind if I remained in your company at least until we can ensure we are all safe?"
Auger awaits Py's reply before revealing anything more about himself.

(OOC: wizards are uncommon in the empire. Most magic users are either sorcerers or warlocks, which most people think are essentially synonymous terms. The concept of a warlock’s patron is not, however, common knowledge. Auger himself has never met another person who has entered into such a bargain or relationship, other than his family. Varielky and Ednyss, on the other hand, will have met warlocks, perhaps three or four, in the provincial regiment. Also important to note, Core of Onyx and the other Dwarven isles are not part of the empire, so Auger wouldn’t know how someone from there might react. And everyone except for Tuff, Amistan and Granophyre is wearing Core of onyx livery. Yet, Auger might have also noticed a red rune shining on Varielky’s forehead when her eyes were shining. Perhaps it represents a similar connection to a demigod, Auger might theorize. And clerics and paladins, common everywhere, of course also report to a higher authority.)
(OOC: Apparently, it is hard to find a word that sounds similar to Pooky, but also different, other than making the consonants softer (P>B, K>G). I guess Varielky nailed it then. Oh, and I totally forgot to describe the mark. As for reacting to learning about your patron, for Varielky at least, it will truly depend on how you present it. Also... that future perfect is confusing.)
Varielky examines the small creature from where she is standing. "Reminds me of that doll Tiny Warrior was always carrying. How did he call it? Pooky? Anyway," she turns towards Granophyre and Tuff, "if what he says is true, perhaps we should depart earlier than expected? There is no reason for us to wait for those who can no longer ascend to the heavens to attack us. I vowed to defend you, but I can only do so much. I find that exhaustion from lack of sleep is easier to fight than an entire army." Indeed, she was tired, having only slept four bells' worth of time, that is assuming nobody decided to cut their watch short. She tries to subdue it, but can't, and a yawn escapes her mouth. "Don't worry, it'll pass once Natanya shines his light on us from the sun."
"Of course Py. Thank you,"Auger says out loud. Again addressing Granophyre Auger speaks.
"My family in Anshin has a strong connection with Piya. An... agent of hers came to me and asked that I travel on this road and to help those I met upon it in this spot. She instructed me to be here now more than a month ago. Py has again confirmed you all are- or were-- or both-- are -- those in need of the help. In her name, for Piya, I offer my service if you will accept it."
Auger touches the small necklace while speaking, mostly looking to Granophyre but also looking to Py at times, perhaps seeking approval.

Granophyre answers. “Skeletons of...beasts, you say.” He turns to Tuff, “It is as I was saying...” but falls silent again as he seems to note that Amistan reacts with horror to this news. “Temple ruins,” he continues. “I must see it with my own eyes. And if I am correct, we have no time to waste.” He reaches into the carriage and removes a shield, which he hands to Tuff, and a few more items. He whistles again, and with a glint of gold the sparrow statuette flits upwards and disappears eastward. The ground quakes once again, a brief rumbling. Strewn stops for a moment, then leads the way east. “Onward cousins, onward my old friend, come company,” and to Auger, “You’re welcome to join us.”
I for one am glad for the help. Dolkum Toorun, at your service, and your family's as well! I was getting a little worried there...
Standing before you is a young dwarf, rather tall, (coming up to the tails of the horses, roughly) sweat pouring from his black hair down his mottled 2 tone grey face and beard, wearing scale mail under livery to match the others. There is a twinkle in his dark blue eyes =)
If the horses are rested enough we might consider moving camp a wee bit and consider our options...2 choices coming to mind are moving on with our journey or taking a closer look at those ruins...

Auger nods thankfully to Strewn and smiles in relief, his exhaustion showing. Looking at Dolkum he continues the smile "Hail Dolkum. It is my pleasure to meet you."
As he sees the party move to the east he joins along, quietly asking after names he has not learned should the opportunity present itself with lantern held high in the dark. After traveling about 1/4 mile Auger again calls his confusing mist and shortly after Py again rises up 50' and then invisibly flies forward 100' to act as a scout relaying info of what lies ahead.
If asked, Auger will hood his lantern.

Another dwarf, this one more average-sized stands off to the side as Varielky and the others interrogate the newcomer. He doesn't participate in the interrogation, but if Auger looks at him, his piercing black eyes seem to glow with divine energy from the battle that slowly fades as the fighting winds down and the last of the undead flee. He rests his hand on an extraordinarily well-crafted War Pick, covered with dwarven runes that are currently propped up against the ground and his other hand holds a square-shaped metal shield. The metal looks a bit bent and dented and it is clear that this shield has seen many fights, but based on the way the dwarf was using it in the fight, it seems to be functional. A suit of scale mail, including a leather skirt covered in a few pieces of metal, is lightly covered in the livery of the Core of Onyx, marking him as a defender of the dwarf that seems to be the leader of the group (Granophyre). The former's skin is a cracked grey and in the wrinkles on his forehead, his age is a bit more apparent. His white hair is covered by a helmet, but it flows around his chin to form a well-kept but long beard. Throughout the conversation, Ednyss simply watches the newcomer with a bit of hesitation, trying to analyze his intentions, and only when he is sure that the human is not a danger to him or Granophyre does he introduce himself in the gravelly voice that is common in some dwarves, "You may call me Ednyss. We appreciate your assistance in the fight." His words with Auger are short and curt and it is clear that he is not saying anything more than what is necessary for now.
As the camp decides to move on, Ednyss follows Granophyre keeping quiet and trying to remember as much as he can about the dwarven history of the Hollow Ones and perhaps their significance. Letting Varielky take the lead in conversation with the newcomer, Ednyss simply stays behind them and keeps his eyes on the human trying to get a better idea of the Southerner's intentions. He is not one to question Granophyre's decisions and will do like the more respected dwarf asks, at least for now. The effect of Mitten's absence is currently unreadable on his face, but given an opportunity along the way to the temple ruins, he will pull Varielky aside and confide in her his sadness for the cat's loss.
(OOC: This conversation would only happen if the DM thinks it's reasonable for us to be able to go off to the side to chat and Varielky would join if Ednyss asked.)
"What do you think Mittens spoke about to Granophyre? We have served with him since our time in the imperial army and I was starting to think we were becoming close. Did I assume too much, or do you think that the tiny warrior was simply asking for advice that we could not offer?"
(OOC: Also... it occurred to me that Ednyss and Varielky never finished our conversation about punishment... I had the small break because of HW and then I got caught up in the battle and completely forgot that we were having that conversation. @DM; it probably won't affect the situation at all, but I'll wait for your approval to see if we can go back and finish that bit of RP.)

“The mark of a successful DM is when you have caused more player deaths with doors than dragons, demons, or devils.”
(OOC: Is it intentional that Piya doesn't have a Dreyen counterpart? She seems to be the only one, so I wanted to make sure it was intentional.)
Varielky doesn't object to Granophyre's choice to go to the temple, but she remains wary. Should things turn grim, his life is a higher priority than his curiosity. "You can call me Varielky," Varielky says if Auger asks, but also continues with an inquiry of her own: "So, Piya, you said? I'm usually knowledgeable about the gods, but I admit I'm not familiar with this one. Could you remind me that which I seem to have forgotten?" While walking, she makes sure to follow him and watch his actions. After discovering that Abodolla was, in fact, the one responsible for the poisoning, she isn't as open to trusting new people. Besides, this one doesn't fight with a sword, nor with a hammer nor an axe. It is easier to mistake these for something they're not.
(Assuming conversation with Ednyss is okay.)
When Ednyss pulls Varielky to the side, she maintains a line of sight to Auger while speaking with him. "I choose to believe it was the latter, albeit it is beyond me to suggest what they were talking about. Was speaking to the master related to his sudden leaving, or was it unrelated? It was so sudden, unexpected. It is unfortunate, I was fond of Mittens."
(OOC: my oversight: the Dreyen version of Piya is Frei Ur, a minor deity who appears in a few Dreyen tales as a helper to Thor/Thura. Varielky may remember this given some time to recall her early lessons.)
Tuff directs Amistan to remain at the encampment and guard the horses. The ranger calls to a wild owl hooting plaintively in the trees which silently glides down to him, and then, submitting to the Shian’s ranger magic, following the golden sparrow’s example, and Py’s, it too takes to the skies and circles high above, keeping watch. “I have seen enough of this haunted wood. Only one month ago, when I was here last, forests grew up to the foothills. No undead, and NO temple for as long as I have lived,” he says gravely, taking up his position atop the carriage once again, plainly displeased at Granophyre's decision to explore.
The ground quakes again, a quick shake, and as you leave, Amistan Aderfi is still calming the horses which, while they seemed not to react at all to the Hollow Ones, are on edge following each temblor, shivering and snorting.
The path, given that you are walking through virgin forests, is easy, and follows along a crack, which seems quite fresh, in the ground, which has split the wood two or three feet wide, allowing room for you to walk directly from your encampment to the east, although the crowns of the trees to either side still mesh high above.
As he follows the path, Ednyss recalls this about Hollow Ones, and Dolkum has read as much, too, in the library of the Temple of Idiwala. Dwarven undead do not simply come from nowhere. They are the bodies of dwarves who lived long ago. And this fact is disturbing because it doesn’t gel with what Amistan said about there being no settlements in this wood. However, in ancient times, dwarves buried their dead, and the great dwarven empire covered the globe. There could have been a dwarven temple here in the distant past, or a village. Or a city, or even a core. All knowledge has been lost regarding the whereabouts of the ancients -- at least, Ednyss had thought it lost until he saw Granophyre’s faded map of the ancient empire. But too, after the step of the Wandering God, the map of the world changed, and earthquakes followed floods in quick succession, new continents rose, and the Old Mystics sank into the earth. Granophyre’s curiosity, and his desire to move quickly, makes sense to Ednyss, if the old scholar holds in mind the theory that the land’s movements may have revealed something which has been long buried by time, and which could just as quickly disappear once again.
Ednyss has heard Mittens speak of his “former Employer” from time to time, and came to understand that the reference was to a being of great magical power and of merciless evil, whose tower lies in Ixtopyl, the so-called “land of monsters.” Mittens mentioned offhand, once, a friend he had left behind, called Nona, and Ednyss has just made the connection that it was she with whom Mittens left, when the company reaches the end of the trail.
It only takes 10 minutes before the forest ends. There is a wide depression in the slope of the hill, flat-bottomed, or relatively flat, and you see a ruin, whose stone markers and runes show it to have been built to glorify Ritha Demsha, long, long ago. All the trees around it have fallen away and their claw-like roots reach as far as 30’ upward and form an interlocked wall around the depression, broken only in one place - the trail you just walked upon. The temple is comprised of tall pillars of stone which seem to barely maintain their balance -- two of them shifting slowly, making a rhythmic grinding sound -- low crumbled wall, and in the center, a large rounded boulder, covered in runes.
Atop the boulder lie two skeletons of lions -- an animal Auger has never seen before, but which all the others have. Varielky witnessed one of her cult’s young men savaged by such a beast when she was a child, and it took many men to subdue it. The others have seen lions at arena games. These are only the skeletons, but with matted manes glowing with necrotic magic surrounding their skulls, and red, glowing eyes which peer directly at you as you approach. The pair lie in repose on the boulder, but move to a sitting position as you approach. Before the boulder, at its base, there is a dark pit, out of which crawls an armored Hollow One as you watch, adding to the ranks also standing before the boulder. These hold iron weapons, not stone, and stand motionless under the setting moon.
You approach from the western edge, and after passing through the downed trees, you are now situated like so.
(OOC: I will not move the action forward from here until you have had a chance to take whatever precautions, or cast defensive spells, or speak among yourselves etc. you wish. The undead will not respond unless/until you advance.)
Auger responds and smiles to any who greet him, thankful at any sense of being welcomed. If others go off to whisper about matters he does not think much of it. Py, I think they are beginning to accept me, he sends.
Responding to Varielky, "Yes, my family worships Piya, Goddess over freshwaters and ships. In our various family trades the relationship with Piya is of profound importance as it is through our connection with waters more so than the lands that we have always found... luck." While speaking Auger holds up the symbol of Piya on his necklace, a small spiral, the inner part of the spiral ends in the outline of an eye.

Py remains invisible and above, relaying any new info as needed. He flies 30' up at G11.
His confusing mists already in place, Auger stands ready, lantern held high in one hand.

(OOC: I was looking back at where the conversation left off, and I think I am still waiting on this... If you already answered and I just couldn't find it, then I apologize!)
Ednyss nods when Varielky describes her methods of repentance. While it is not necessarily the path that Ednyss chooses, each person has their own way of connecting with the gods and if this worked for the young Varielky, then Ednyss would not challenge that. Before Ednyss responds, he spends some time thinking if anything like this was ever done back in his home or if he knows of any practices that could fulfill Varielky's needs.
"The way that Granophyre was speaking, it seemed as if the conversation they had in Asilah had something to do with his departure. Although what exactly, I do not know and I'm not sure that we need to. If the master is satisfied with Mittens and the journey that he is now upon, then there must be a good reason that the tiny warrior had to leave us." He commiserates with Varielky and reflects on some of their memories with Mittens to ease the pain of his departure. As they approach the end of the forest, Ednyss will rejoin the rest of the group and at this point, he starts to put together connections about Nona and the method of Mittens's departure.
(At the ruins)
His thoughts about Mittens's leaving are cut short when he sees the horde of undead waiting for them at the ruins. Ednyss says a quick prayer to Takal Demesh, "Let your spirit guide us so that our prowess in battle may show through and we may put these creatures back to rest." As he does this, he creates a temporary shield of magic around Varielky to bolster her defenses as she will likely be the one that is on the front lines.
Crouching low, he informs the others, "Unfortunately, much of my connection has been already drawn upon. I am limited in the magic that I can further draw, but I can still draw upon some reserves to fight from the back. Is there a plan of attack that we may be able to use that can shift the battle in our favor?" Looking down at the Hollow Ones, now equipped with metal armor, Ednyss continues, "Otherwise, given that our resources are depleted, our odds may not be too strong."
Bonus Action: Cast Shield of Faith on Varielky A shimmering field appears and surrounds a creature of your choice within range, granting it a +2 bonus to AC for the duration (10 minutes).
"I know of no other divine methods that might help you as of now. Most of my abilities involve actual physical injury which is not your goal." Ednyss lets out a sigh, "But if you would like me to assist you in some other way, perhaps I could. If physical endurance was something you were trying to test and your legs are becoming too resilient, you might hold your arms in the air for as long as you could instead." It is obvious that Ednyss has little to no idea what he is talking about, but he is trying to be as helpful as he can. "If you wish to try sitting on your knees again, I might be able to weaken your body's resilience so that your pain is amplified as well if it helps you to repent."

(Conversation before crab attack)
Varielky ponders Ednyss suggestion for a while. It will look strange, that's for sure, but there were some methods that worked similarly, though not the exact same way. They walk in silence for a while, until Varielky suddenly raises her hands up. "This is either a good idea or a foolish joke. I'll see which one it is." It is strange seeing her walking with her arms up like that, which she manages to keep up for... (OOC: I wanted to see what's a reasonable amount of time, and found out someone held their hands high for 45 years. Maybe more already. The people that live on this planet... I'll just come up with a roll that has a range that makes sense.) 6 minutes before eventually lowering them. "It is strange, but I guess my arms are built for multiple short bursts of strength, rather than a long time of hanging in the air." She doesn't say anything about whether or not the method was effective for its original goal.
(Conversation with Auger)
"That does ring a bell." Although she doesn't trust the man, identifying him from a southern origin also allows her to be more open with him, just slightly, such as hinting at different beliefs. Especially here, far from unfamiliar ears. "It is sometimes hard to remember the Jenghen presentation of the gods, even though they are usually similar in one way or another." There's a long pause, or maybe Auger has something to say in the meantime, but Varielky eventually says: "It's not personal, I hope you understand, but given my job is to protect the master, I cannot allow myself to trust any stranger we happen to meet, especially not under your circumstances. The master seems to trust you, but I still don't. Don't prove I'm right on this matter."
(Conversation on the way in the forest with Ednyss)
Varielky continues to talk about Mittens with Ednyss, and the Dwarf manages to extract some unexpected sentimentality from her, which she didn't show often. It is quite clear now that the nickname "Tiny Warrior" she had given him was a sign of respect and not an attempt to mock him. Apparently, she was truly impressed by him back at Lokimorra. Varielky avoids revealing her thoughts about anyone else, however, even if Ednyss asks her. Additionally, Ednyss notices that Varielky is tired. She tries to hide it, but he can notice she doesn't just slow down to stay in line with Ednyss, but occasionally slows a bit too much. There are also a few times she manages to subdue a yawn, but Ednyss is too perceptive and notice that it was there.
(At the ruins)
"First, the Azhvuv - assassins that are often considered a myth. Then, crabs the size of mountains and walking corpses that fight as if they have merely been taking a short nap. Lastly, beasts that can overpower several trained fighters; stripped of their flesh and skin, yet seem able to move, and their eyes glow red. Since we departed on our journey, we have met all but the Jenghen warriors you were worried about - the only ones of all I've mentioned I'll gladly cross my sword with any time. Do we wish to fight those as well? What is our goal here? If these beasts are even half what they were while their blood ran in their veins, you might want to reconsider approaching."Varielky won't argue further, but at least she had stated her thoughts. Varielky raises an eyebrow as Ednyss bestows his blessing upon her, but trusts that he knows what he is doing. On the other hand, if he is asking for a plan, they might be in a tight spot. Varielky tries to assess the situation, but these were not the living warriors she knew. It was hard to appreciate whether a strategy will work or not, considering the unknown - to her at least - nature of these foes. In addition, she wasn't sure whether the methods to create fear in the hearts of her foes that she learnt while practising in the arena will have any effect on these creatures. After all, they were already dead, why would they fear death?
Ednyss will likely notice Varielky's eyebrow when he gives the shield and he quietly responds so that just she can hear, "You are the last person I have from the brigade, Ka'imi and Dyn haven't been around for a while, and now Mittens is gone too." Shrugging, and trying to play off the sentimentality, he adds, "Besides you are one of our more adept warriors, and preventing you from getting hit will keep all of us alive longer." He points to Granophyre, "Including our charge." He then looks at Granophyre expectantly for an answer to Varielky's question. The shieldmaiden certainly had a point, but their charge would ultimately determine their course of action.

Auger nods along, "Yes I see now how my appearance at that moment must have seemed suspicious. You will have no reason to worry about me and in time we can find trust in each other I'm sure." While walking Auger produces a small piece of wood and a small cutting tool, worrying at the wood with his thumbs and occasionally making small cuts while he walks. "You are all as much strangers to me as I of you. Tell me of who you worship and what brings a Dreyen to enter service for Granophyre and his company."
Auger happily makes small talk and asks questions of Varielky should she be interested in talking. Watching Auger's hands work the wood for a moment Varielky becomes startled to realize that the lantern still floats along next to Auger. When looking at it she sees another ghostly Dragonfly is carrying it and silently keeping up with the group, occasionally changing position ever so slightly to perfect the light as Auger examines his work.

Varielky
"Of course Py. Thank you," Auger says out loud.

Varielky

On the path
At the Ruins
Py remains invisible and above, relaying any new info as needed. He flies 30' up at G11.
His confusing mists already in place, Auger stands ready, lantern held high in one hand.

(OOC: I was looking back at where the conversation left off, and I think I am still waiting on this... If you already answered and I just couldn't find it, then I apologize!)
(On the way to the ruins)
Bonus Action: Cast Shield of Faith on Varielky

If these beasts are even half what they were while their blood ran in their veins, you might want to reconsider approaching." Varielky won't argue further, but at least she had stated her thoughts.
Varielky
“The mark of a successful DM is when you have caused more player deaths with doors than dragons, demons, or devils.”
Conversation with Varielky
