Ash pulls out the contents of the draws and riffles through it all on the desk. She leaves it all out, for all to see, and places the Lizardfolk map on the top of all the paperwork. She’ll point it all out to Ben and the others when they come back in.
When she spots what looks like the edge of a trapdoor under the rug, she kicks the rug off it and tries opening it.
After quickly seeing if the trapdoor opens and glancing in with her darkvision (perception check: 21), she heads next door with Ben and tries to help him investigate the room and the places that he says are magical.
The captain had 30 minutes of KO time from when Ben left the room to check the cargo hold and other rooms, so he should be coming to any minute here, or if one of you wakes him earlier. Ben, you and Ash had time though for sure to check that magic room prior to the captain waking in those 30 minutes.
Ess says to Ben"Yep. I'll wait here, bruh."
Ash, before heading to the 'magic room' with Ben, you open the hatch in the captain's room on the floor under the rug and take a glance. It leads to a room below that you killed someone in. Level 3, guy with the red "X". (you didn't go down, right? Just took a glance?)
So, as for the magic room with those rolls and also with Ben's detect magic still on:
So there's the dead body still in here. "X" on the map. The body has a quarterstaff, and that's about it.
The furnishings and fittings are of good quality, and the place is tidy. A single bunk, made up with bed linen, has its head against a bulkhead running along the centerline of the ship.
A polished wood table stands in the center of the room, bolted to the deck. On the table is a silver bowl containing an assortment of fruit, a silver carafe half full of a light red liquid, and a silver goblet. Set at the table are two upright wooden chairs and a padded leather chair.
On the deck toward the stern is a wooden, brass-bound chest. Beside it is a pair of highly polished black leather boots. From the center of the ceiling, over the table, hangs a dimly lit hooded lantern.
On a peg behind the door hangs a maroon robe.
Ben, the wooden, brass-bound chest is emanating the auras. Big time. Nothing else in the room seems to be pinging.
Ash, please roll a perception check with advantage from Ben's help for an overall check of the room.
Ash, as you mentioned, you also specifically investigate the chest since it's emanating the magic. It's definitely locked, and you don't notice any type of traps/rigs on or around it.
Just to save time (sorry everyone! super slow lately)
After you all return to the captain's room, the captain wakes is very groggy. He mumbles a bit, and then sees you all.
"Ughh.... ugggmmmm.... who... arrrrrrrrrrrr.. who are you?! Aaarrrrggghhhhh!! What is the meaning of this?? BJORN! FOUL! PUNKETAH!? ARRRRRR, HEEEELLLPPP!!!!"
He would call this out, unless you gagged him? If you did, he would've just been mumbling as hard as he could, trying to get the point across that he wants you to ungag him, and then he'd say all that.
The lizardfolk do not hear him yell as both doors are shut and the captain hasn't fully came to yet.
He will then have a seat at the table with the fruit and select a fruit to munch on while he waits. He will give the red liquid a sniff and then a small taste. If it is good he'll transfer it to his water skin then toss the silver bowl, carafe and goblet into the bag of holding.
He looks at the dead guy's shiny boots then looks at his own less shiny boots in captain form and shakes his head while he chews and hums.
---
((He was gagged but we'd pull it get a chance to talk to him.))
Ben, still in Captain form says,
"I am the the ghost of your conscience, none will come to aid you! You have this last chance to atone for your crimes! Repent them, starting in reverse chronological order!"
He chuckles at his own comedy.
"More seriously, everyone on your crew is dead. In fact, everyone in your smuggling operation is dead but you. So, captain, now is your single chance to avoid joining them."
He allows that to sink in before asking,
"What are the lizardfolk doing, or planning on doing, with the weapons you've been selling them?"
((Hopefully Ash, Kay or Ess are looking intimidating behind Ben as he threatens the guy so he can have advantage on the roll...))
As the captain raises his voice, Kay taps him on the head with his staff. Not enough to do damage, but sharply enough to get his attention and let him know that isn't going to be tolerated.

Ben, while you wait for Ash to do her thing, you are able to find a nice apple from the basket to munch on.
The red liquid is wine, and it's good. Damn good.
You add the items into the bag.
(Ash can still do her thing in here, but I will move the captain interrogation forward now in parallel)
Ben, with your menacing words and Korrik's staff threatening, you've managed to do the trick. The captain is afraid for his life, and he believes what you said. Ess also maybe tried to help by showing his sword, but he specifically did not help the cause. lol.
The captain responds "What?! Dead!? Arrrrrrrrr! I suppose 'tis magic that yer using thereeee to look like me yeah? How the bloody... BAH, *cough cough* I suppose it matters not. Look, I don't know nothin about the lizard's business. *uughhhh cough cough* they just pay real well, that's all I care about. Who the fork cares what they're doin with the weapons, arrrrr *cough cough* aaarrrrrrrr... I don't ask questions. Those lizards are real pricks to deal with when they get angry. Arrrrrrrrr."
"So.... what may be my fate now, CAPTAIN?"
He kind of looks at you Ben with death in his eyes, kind of submitting to the fact that he has been captured and might even rather die than be brought to jail or worse.
Captain Ben ponders what the captain said for truthfulness.
Insight: 17
He also asks,
"How much do they pay and where is the payment? And the weapons you're selling them. We haven't found them yet and saving us time can only endear you to us."
He pulls out the letters from the captain's wives,
"And I would hate to have anything unpleasant happen to..." He reads the names, "Your dearest Wilbertha, Vendula or Kurta because you were holding out."
((OOC: Sorry for the delay! Work, plus dndbeyond not sending notifications, meant I’ve been slipping behind! Sorry!))
Ash will totally ‘do her thing’ on the locked chest. And since the party are not under massive time pressure, and since he has skills too, she’ll get Korrik to help her crack the lock...
“That’s right. If you can hold it still…. Yep… A little more pressure on the lid while I just try to…. …”
Thieves’ tools check (adv. from help): 15
“There…. That’s it!…… … Did that do it?”. She attempts to lift the lid and look in…
Back with the Captain, she will attempt to look suitably menacing but will leave the talking to Ben.
((OOC: I’m still getting notifications when someone posts on a game, but anything up to a day or more late, as opposed to within a few minutes! But no idea why. It’s been going on like maybe a week or so I think))
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Captain Ben, given the nature of this smuggling gang, it wouldn't be totally crazy that the captain might not know the full details about the lizardfolk's weapons and why they need them. You get a sense that the gang most highly values gold, drink, and the freedom that comes with pursuing a life of crime vs. getting involved in things like lizardfolk's business.
You think he's probably telling the truth.
"The payment is right over there in my chest. Are ye blind?! Those ingots in there. Not sure if the lizards make em or what. That's only half the payment, too. They likely have the rest. You didn't find the weapons yet?! Arrrrr, what kind of pirates are ye, *cough cough* ahhh BLAST. Nevermind, arrrr. They're down below. The back of Bjorn's cabin. One of my crew that ye bastards all killed. Best first mate ever. Arrrrrrrrrrrr."
He then responds about the women "BAH! Ye think I care about those whores! hahahahahaha! Arrrrrrrrr! Look, wizard, or whatever the hell you are, do with me what you're gonna do with me. Stop playing games, yer not good at it." he just laughs. (SORRY, JUST IN CHARACTER!!)
Ok, back to Ash. This would've happened before the shakedown of the captain.
*click* Ash, you manage to pick the lock and the box opens.
ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
You hear a faint hissing sound, and then all of a sudden, as the box opens, a small cloud of visible light purple gas poofs from the chest.
Ash, you missed it. The box was rigged, and it was something that you've never seen before which is how you overlooked it. (investigation = 6) Please roll a CON save. DC 12, fail and you're unconscious for 4 minutes. (not a big deal either way, and does not change anything as it's so short of a duration, just kind of funny!)
Ben was not in range of the gas as he was eating at the table and so no roll is required for him.
However, if Korrik did in fact help with the lock, then he will also have to roll.
The chest holds items of clothing, a leather purse containing 50 gp, a magical scroll and a book which seems to be a spellbook given the aura that Ben can see from it.
(also, will need fresh intimidation/persuasion/other checks for further interrogation of the captain depending on if you ask him anything else, please)
Ash hears the unnecessarily long ‘hissssssss-‘, of the trap and immediately pushes herself down on top of Korrik, trying to roll them both out of the way, and hopefully helping him to avoid the trap too(?).
After a couple of awkward seconds of being on top of each other, she goes through the chest properly and grabs out and shares anything that looks interesting or valuable ((all of it!.. maybe straight to group loot?)).
She’ll also help with any further intimidation, but she’s starting to feel ready to knock the Captain out again and then try and pick off the lizardfolk one at a time if possible.
Ben glances over to where the ingots were and are no longer and then fixates on the word 'half'.
"With them you say? Very interesting. We aren't any type of pirate, unless you include bounty hunters as pirates."
He shakes he head at the captain's response about his wives and re-reads one,
"If Vendula does half the things she describes here, in surprisingly vivid prose, I would definitely develop a warm spot in my...heart for her. She could be a novelist."
As he is reading and smiling to himself he will glance over to Ash and say,
"I think we are done here. Good bye captain."
And once he is dead or out he'd recommend the go check the quarters below and look for that stash while deciding what to do about the lizardfolk.
----
Ben leans a bit back as the gas puffs out and prestidigitates it away from him, snorting at the pile of teammates left in it's wake. As Ash rises and Korrik doesn't he will ask, still sitting,
"Did you squish him?"
Once they confirm he isn't dead Ben will flip through the magic book and look at the scroll.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Ash manages to fight off the gas, but Korrik gets too much of it in his lungs and he passes out for the 3 minutes.
((sorry, yes I overlooked that you took the ignots - the captain assumed they were still in there when he said his piece.))
The captain's eyes widen as he realizes what is next. Ash, both of the ends of the daggers connect, maybe at the same time, in both temples. It turns out his lights once again, and he's unconscious for 3 hours unless you wake him. Ash, you re-restrain and gag him again as well.
I'm going to say that if you guys try to KO him again, he's going to die. That's way too much trauma to the brain.
If you are going to now check the quarters below, please let me know exactly where and how and make appropriate rolls.
I will get back to Ben about his arcana check on the scroll and book once I get help with my OOC message :)

((From when Ben poked his head in, wouldn't that last room be revealed?))
"Well, lets go down an check the stash to see what we're dealing with. Any guesses on the room that held the best first mate ever?"
Once they get down there he'll say,
"Ash, Kay go ahead and check the rooms. Ess, I need you to help me get this silk into the bag while they do that."
He reaches in and pulls out the two shields and tosses them to the side,
"This is going to pretty much fill the bag up, but I couldn't sleep if we left 2,500 gold worth of silk to be 'reclaimed'. We did do all the work."
He will hold the bag open and gesture for Ess to start putting the silks bolts in.
((oops I missed that, yes if he did poke his head in there when he was checking out the cargo, then yes absolutely. I've uncovered it on the map.))
"Who knows, but it seems the weapons are down there somewhere in the first mate's room, right bro?"
"Oh yeah man sure thing. Yeah, after this, I can totally live with that. ha ha ha" and Ess starts loading the bolts of silk into the bag.
What's next?
Ben, while you're not familiar with the words and specific magical effects of the spells in the book and scroll, you do get a good sense of a few things.
The scroll seems to be of evocation magic, and you get a sense that the spell is of a lower level and is element-based.
The spellbook contains pages and pages of text which you can't make out, but you can tell that it seems to be suited towards an apprentice wizard, with lower end conjuration and evocation spells scribed within. You have a feeling given the owner of this book is likely a wizard or an apprentice, that these spells are likely offensive in nature.
