Welcome to Waterdeep, the Crown of the North, where a wondrous tale of urban adventure is about to unfold. Our story begins with the gathering of adventurers at the Yawning Portal Inn and Tavern. Volothamp Geddarm, the famous explorer and raconteur, has a quest for them — one that entangles the characters in a bitter conflict between two nefarious organizations. If the adventurers complete his quest, Volo rewards them handsomely. Yet a much greater prize lies hidden somewhere in the City of Splendors, waiting to be claimed.
There's already four players in the group so far and I'm looking for three more. If you've already played or ran Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, that's fine. If you don't mind, please tell me how far you made it and who your villain was in the game.
So far we have - a Forest Gnome Trickster Cleric, a Half-Elf Monk, a Kobold Wizard, and a Gnome Barbarian.
EVERYONE STARTS AT LEVEL 1
Stat generation: Dice roll, Point Buy or Standard Array. If you want to roll dice, roll it in your comments.
Races and classes:Any published D&D material is fine. If you purchased a subclass from DMsGuild, or found a homebrew subclass on D&D Beyond, that works too. If your subclass/archetype isn't on D&D Beyond's homebrew section, send me the pdf file and I can make a copy for you on Homebrew. Tasha's variant rules for races is also fine.
Factions: Various factions have roots in Waterdeep, and any character can choose a faction with renown of zero. In addition to the main story, there will be opportunities for side quests. The following factions are available: Bregan D’aerthe, The Harpers, Emerald Enclave, Zhentarim, Force Grey, Lord's Alliance, Order of the Gauntlet and Xanathar's Guild. There are other Waterdahvian factions I may introduce later in the game.
Backstory and Why you're in Waterdeep: Think of a reason why your character is in The City of Splendors. Maybe you're born here. Perhaps you came here for a caravan. Probably some archmage accidentally teleported you here.
Leshanna is a bounty hunter out of the Fey Wilds. She is sent out to track down criminals that try to flee from justice. The justice part of it she could take or leave, the hunt is what matters to her. She loves to pit her skills against those of her quarry, and seeks the most difficult of criminals to hunt down.
Leshanna is in the City of Splenders now hunting one of her quarries. (I will leave the person up to the DM, as that will help tie Leshanna into the storyline a bit more.)
Character notes:
Leshanna will be a melee-focused wizard. She will use hit-and-run tactics, coupled with her ability to misty step around, and should be considered a melee character. She will also have the vercitility to back off and cast spells, so there is a good deal of ranged options she can fall back on, as well as utility from her rituals.

Nebula, Tiefling Druid (Circle of Stars)
Faction: Emerald Enclave
Prior Experience: Made it to buying and restoring Trollskull Manor, not sure who the villain was going to be.
Backstory: Nebula is a mostly solitary creature who makes a habit of stargazing, taking omens from the constellations above to guide his own life. He lives outside the city but travels into it occasionally in order to stock up on supplies, meet people, and be a part-time fortune teller from time to time. Nebula is a grayish-blue tiefling with whitish hair, and a simple blue vest.
Thanks for putting this one on. I haven't had any experience with Dragon Heist but have been curious about it for awhile. I'll roll here and see what I can put together.

Name: Bard Knutsson Race: Half Elf Class: Fighter Background: Pirate (more of a raider / viking than a pirate) Faction: N/A Abilities: Rolled per above, and used Tasha's race variant for the final scores.
Bard comes from a northern Illuskan community. Raised with humans and the son of a longship captain, Bard grew up raiding the coastal communities to the south. Curiosity, more than anything has brought him down to Waterdeep. He's heard stories of great wealth and opportunity here. He hopes to get enough of this wealth to gets his own fleet of longships. At least that's what he tells everyone. And while there is some truth to it, he wonders a bit about the elven half of his heritage. His mother disappeared when he was young and he knows nothing of her people, and it's a bit hard to learn more when most of your encounters with the outside are burning those outsider's villages down.
While Bard is very rough and tumble and is happy to be the first one into a fight, he's also here to learn everything he can, mostly about elves, but about the outside world in general.
Hi I am interested in. I have never played Dragon Heist before so I'm really looking forward this adventure. By the way our character starts from Lv1 right?
Name: Xiang
Race: Variant Human
Class: Rogue (Arcane Trickster)
Background: Criminal
Faction: Independent
Abilities: Point Buy
Backstory:
Xiang was a copper dragon. At least she thinks so. When she was a dragon, Xiang was a mischievous treasure hunter and magic item collector. One day she sneaked in a powerful archmage's laboratory and accidentally destroyed one of his precious artifact. The old wizard was furious. He turned Xiang into mortal human and teleport her to Waterdeep. Ordered her to find something as precious as his broken treasure. Untill then she has to stay in her ugly monkey body. Now Xiang must be hurry because human time runs faster than dragons.
The wizard who cursed Xiang is called Fizban the Fabulous. If you have read Dragonlance novels before, you might know …… that he is the avatar of Bahamut.
The dragon god punished Xiang because she started to steal from normal people and fellow metallic dragons. Xiang had been too mischievous and one step away from becoming an evil dragon. Bahamut put Xiang into a small and weak human body, hoping she will overcome her greed and find something more important than magical treasures.
The dragon god's curse sealed Xiang's draconic power. But at the same time it makes her immune to all antidragon magics includes Ahghairon's dragonward.

Name: Sir Ironspear Race: Warforge Class: Paladin Background: Knight Backstory: The party gathered around the fallen knight. He had taken to the brunt of the attack from the Owlbear and saved so many of the party, allowing them to take down the enraged creature. The mage was crying and the Cleric though stopped death from taking the knight, was not powerful enough to restore his friend. In the end, the party left some money with the gnomes that had hired them to care for the knight during his last days. The party all believed the Knight would die soon. One, two then three days passed and the Knight did not die. Three weeks passed and the gnomes found that they might be taking care of this fallen knight for much longer than they had anticipated. Then one of the gnomes hit upon an idea. Why not use their ingenuity to help the knight get back on his feet and then, be on his way. Weeks turned into months and the Knight lay in his bed, praying for death or some revelation that would guide him to the answers he sought. The gnomes came to him, "WE have an idea on how for you to return to your life before" they tell him." I will do whatever it takes" he replied. With the Knights statement, the gnomes set to work. Artificers and doctors were consulted and within weeks the Knight was rolled into a room with bright lights and a large gnome audience sitting on benches above him. "We embark on new territory." the head gnome yelled to the audience. "Today we will merge man with machine. Today we create a new lifeform." With that, the Knight was put under and the surgery began.
The Knight awoke days later seated on the side of the road with a sign hanging around his neck. "Free to a Good Home" the sign said. Flinging the sign aside, the knight stood. He looked down, saw a body made of steel, stone, and wood. His memory of who he had been was gone, he knew he was a knight but, that was it. In the distance, he saw a city. There he knew he could find work. There he would find hope. The knight gathered the things that were around him and set out for the city.
Saridek the Half Orc: You know that old saw - look into the abyss long enough and sooner or later find yourself on the inside looking out. That's kind of what Saridek the Half Orc is all about...sort of. Except, as an exterminator in Waterdeep, he's been working in the abyss since he was knee high to a halfling. Not that Saridek has issues with his height, o no indeed! It's the rest of the City that is vertically challenged. Saridek is the perfect height, for a dwarf.

Races and classes:Khione, silver dragonborn paladin, oath of devotion (rough character sheet: x)
Factions: Order of the Gauntlet
Backstory and Why you're in Waterdeep: Khione witnessed the end of near her entire village, wiping out of families including most of her own, though she has relatives elsewhere she hardly knew before. She vowed to never feel as powerless again, and travelled to the city and joined the Order to try and make some of that right, or at least to somehow make up for her failings. She carries that guilt every day.
I have no Waterdeep experience, but lots of text-based-rp experience and Enthusiasm.
Thank you all for the submissions so far. Yes, we are starting at level 1. I'll keep recruitment open for the remainder of the day, so if there's any tweaks you want to make go for it.

Ability scores: 121515141312
Name: Shayne McGee
Race: Human (variant)
Class: Bard
Background: Charlatan or criminal, maybe spy...
Backstory: Shayne is part storyteller, part barfly, part conman and totally full of crap. Shayne believes that any trouble he can find himself into he can talk himself out of... And if not, he has some other tricks up his sleeves.
Shayne is in Waterdeep because he hard this was where the action was... He is here to listen and steal (learn) the stories and songs which populate it's bars, drink the ales they serve, woo the patrons and make a coin or two however he can. Performing on his flute or lute, recalling the bar goers with tales or derring-do, pilfering a loose item or two, being unbelievably lucky at cards (thanks to either a marked deck or his familiar Fammy the cat spying on the other players cards) or... If the risk seems right, perhaps joining a group who seem likely to hit a good payday.
Final Notes: I'm actually just recently back to D&D after decades of absence and am not as familiar with the realms and such as others obviously are. I'm still catching up on all of that. If that is a problem, obviously choose someone else. I also really try to play up the RP and fast talking aspects of a Bard such as I have in mind. Sometimes I do what I can to actually speechify or such, other times I may just need to say he is trying to convince someone of such... But if persuasion and performance rolls aren't going to matter, again best to go in a different direction than myself. I don't Min/Max or even focus too much on the best way to do things number wise, I tend to focus on thematics and fun so *shrug*

Howdy. EDIT SO I EDITED IN THE LINKS TO THE CHARACTERS ,AND ROLLED FOR THE WARLOCK'S GOLD. and now it says that roll warning. I don't know why, hadn't changed anything that i know of other than adding in the hotlink to Violet's . So I don't know what I changed there... but i can reroll it all if need be.
I've never played nor do I know anything about this adventure other than it is part of some multiseries of APs or something like that. and that I think its levels 1-5? So I'd be interested in it. Plus I'm lacking in succesful games as of late.So a pbp would be pretty nifty.
I didn't see how you were doing D ice roll state. 4d6? or are we rerolling 1s, or dropping one of the 4? etc. I'll go with point buy atm, but might roll depending on the parameters. Rolling can be fun, or can ruin a concept. I also don't know anything about the Factions; I have heard of Bregan and Harpers due to reading Forgotten Realms but functionally I know not much.
Character Concepts: Violet. Unfathomed Warlock or Red-An Alchemist Artificer* Short versions of their backgrounds below. (I have long versions if interests). I'm not sure which would fit your group make up more off hand. I can edit in level 1 characters later (either when I hear about the rolling, or I'll go use point buy)
Violet of secrets 5 gold V.Human with Shadow Touched. Far Travler (probably fits best)
Violet is a courier in the city of Waterdeep. Violet adores knowing secrets. Its such a bad habit of hers. It is one reason she became a courier in the smaller towns in teens, and now that she's younger she became a courier in Waterdeep. She has been for a while now. She was very normal most of her life; but through oddities as well as some work place bullying she ended up being the courier who did the weird jobs. One of which lead to her a local hilltop to deliver offical corrospondence from the local governence to a hermit. What she didn't know at the start was that he lived in a tower on a mountain-not a hill. It wasn't a fun trip, and they did not cooperate all but she got through it. The hermit however thought her dedication was noteworthy-and gave her a blank book. She thought it was weird; but she felt a bond to it and was proud that she managed to complete such an odd job. However, because of that her coworkers tended to stick her with the odd ones. One of which ended up on a few days trip to some Shrine on a mountain-always a mountain she thought. This trip too did not go so enjoyable as she was chased down the mountain by shadow beasts. While escaping someone road by on a horse and held their hand out. They continued on horseback until they crashed on a bridge. She doesnt' remember much but apparently a Dapper Gentlemen rescued them-they were apparently marked in some way. The gentlemen noted her lucky charm-that small blank book, and asked if she wanted to learn magic. In between lessens she still fulfilled her courier duties of course, but if the opprotunity was given, why not learn. She later ended up working in Waterdeep-her love of secrets getting the better of her.
Violet is a Fathomless Warlock. She'll fight fairly straightforward as an eldritch blast style caster. (EB will be flavored as Dark Water or Ice depending on situations etc)
Red the Alchemist (Might change name to Fuse though (fu u ss not like fuse box) V.Human with the Mobile Feat. Folk Hero Note: Did not spend money or equipement yet. 12 Never rolled for gold before. Why not
Red wasn't the nicest kid in the village, had some self centered issues. These stemmed from feeling that he was the most clever in the village. His confidence was shattered when some shadow creatures from the local mountain-that was labeled as cursed took note of him; the foolish child thinking he could find something cool in the area. They did not hurt him; yet, they started hunting him. Daily, never attacking, alway scattering around others, but always there-at the edge of his sight. It wore on him for several months. Whenever he was out at night alone they would chase. One night he was caught out after sunset-He was trying to make it home when he saw others being chased by a similar creature. In his attempt to help they all crashed on a bridge. But Red had finally snapped; alone he was terrorfied but now these others were being hunted. He tried to fight back with a bit of wood. It didn't go well. yet, a dapper gentleman walked up from the otherside of the bridge and easily dispatched the creatures. Telling the three that they were marked and they might or will someday come back. However, he was willing to train them. The other two found their skillsets; one in magic, the other in weapons. Red however, was fairly lousy at them all; but he was clever and learned to use tools to get around it. Creating his own style using Alchemy and Enchantments to fight. He was not strong, but he could do it. On their "graduation day" their teacher gifted them things; Red recieved a ring, the ring his master always wore. One of the others had no taste for violence but needed to learn to defend himself; he however went back to farming. The girl opted to return to her job in the city. Red however, decided he was better now than he was before, and that he did not want to forget the feeling he had before-of wanting to protect. He decided to be like his teacher and travel to help out, explore and life well. He's in Waterdeep to learn, make some gold, resupply.
Red is a gap fill style charcter. He can do a lot of things moderately well, but isnt' specialized. He can do ranged, he can heal, he ha some melee ability and decent AC. He's built to do what needs to be done, and help others do their work. Alchemist is his primary class; however his original plan involved Warlock 1 or 3. Genie warlock with his Master actually being a genie with the ring. Having gifted it to help Red "learn" because he had no natural talent. (3 Pact of the Blade for great fluffing with Mercurial Alchemy weapons made from quick silver mixed with his blood).
Honestly I want him to use a Whip but profiency isn't there.. but it fits very well... poisoned whip!
Red is entirely fluffed as alchemy items or etched pre-enchanted items. He has no magic he wields and only has his tools he's made. if he dips Genie Warlock later (woudl be level 2) the genie lamp will be his mobile Alchemical Labratory his master gifted him. WIth him thining its just a high level enchantment. Not actually realizing he agreed to a pact long ago.
EDIT: Looking at how others are rolling, most are doing 4d6 drop one (the auto) and the other half are doing the reroll 1s once. So I'll do that, can roll again if chosen and GM prefers. Ability scores: 12151091615
Name: Lussvanta Ungo Character Generation: Point Buy Race: Drow Class: Ranger Background: Far Traveler Backstory: With her entire village displaced from their home by a deep delving dragon when she was but a child, Lussa, as she is known to her friends, has harbored an intense resentment towards all dragonkind as a result. Her desire to reclaim her ancestral home on behalf of her family and community has caused her to travel far and wide in search of lore and weapons that can be used against them. She has travelled the length and breadth of the land, but still has not found the keys she seeks to defeat the dragon of her homeland and drive if it off, or even better, slay it where it stands. And so, she continues her travels and her search, looking for new skills, new lore, new weapons to reclaim an old ancestral home.
Why in Waterdeep: She has heard rumors that the city has some kind of ward against dragons and dragonkind and wants to see if she can learn more about it and see if it may be helpful in reclaiming her home.
Name: Lucas Gemstriker Race: Variant Human Class: Warlock (Hexblade) Background: Folk Hero Faction: n/a, independent Abilities: Rolled (above)
Backstory: Lucas had dreams of being a hero when he was young, like many young children in his village, he would run around with a stick in hand, fighting the shadows that held monsters. However, like many, as he grew up, he gave up such ideals for the sake of living. He took over his mother's jewel appraisal job in the mining town and began setting himself up for the rest of his life....until life came knocking in a way no one expected. Bandits. They raided the town, killing the guards and taking those they wished before running off. Lucas himself took a lethal wound, but just as he laid there dying full of regret, he heard an offer, to fight back and become that hero he always wished he could have been. Afraid to die and unwilling to let the bandits go, he accepted. By the time he was getting back to his feet, the bandits had mostly runoff, and he cut down the few that were left, rallying the people still there to capture them. Once it was all said and done, people applauded him and the local lord even praised his efforts....but he couldn't stop. He had heard from one of the captured bandits that they were planning to sell people in the underground market through Waterdeep and knew he had to go find them.....furthermore, a voice in the back of his head urged him to do the same.
Reason for being in Waterdeep: Officially, Lucas is there to track down his friend, neighbors, and fellow townsfolk who were taken by bandits. Unofficially, however, the voice in his head, the one who granted him this second chance and the power to use it, urges him to stay and seek something.
Races and classes:Half-elf, Rogue (intent to Mastermind)
Factions: Zhentarim
Backstory and Why you're in Waterdeep: Thervan was born to poor and shady parents, a human father and elven mother, who’s day to day activities were never quite on the up and up. His father was possibly killed (although never proven) and his mother led a life full of schemes and business dealings that put her, and Thervan, in touch with the seedier side of Waterdeep. Once he reached adulthood he fell into the life himself, but with grand designs to make something of himself. Maybe a powerful businessman, maybe a shadow broker, maybe a guild boss. But something big. I’m the meantime he managed to worm his way into the Zhentarim with the idea that they can provide the contacts he needs to fulfill his dreams. And if he needs to help some others to get things done, so be it.
Note: Although his background will be criminal, and he will have selfish tendencies, I do not play murder-hobos or party sabotaging jerks. He’s just out for himself, but sees the value in establishing contacts and partners and a reputation that others want to work with.
Cimer is a bottom of the hierarchy agent of the Lord’s Alliance. He’s been sharpening his skills as a trickster and confidence man for most of his life. There was a sudden shift from petty crimes though. His sister. She had tried to fleece a noble - not just some inbred minor house with a few farms, but true nobility and power. She wasn’t simply caught, she vanished. Cimer burns with a desire for vengeance, and the power to do so. He’s tried to get in with the Lords’ Alliance for that power for a long time, but it was moving too slowly. So when he found the pathetic creature, Foul-Shanks, hiding in an alleyway shadow. It offered a fast track to his Lord’s Alliance position, through magic. It would teach him magic, and so his star would rise, and he could actually reach his vengeance one day.
Race/Class - Dragonborn / Cleric (MC into Rogue at lvl 2)
Backstory - When Quint was a young child, his family was on a voyage by ship when a terrible storm drove their ship into the reefs. Everyone but Quint drowned in the shipwreck, and his future looked grim on the rocky reef in the ocean. A passing ship rescued Quint, and he was adopted into a Talos worshiping pirate clan named the Stormchasers. Quint was raised by the clan's head priest, and was taught to preach and worship Talos, along with more unsavory arts of pirate life. Quint spent the next decade living with the clan on their home island and learning from his adoptive father Verrik. When he was 18, Quint was sent on his first raid as the weather priest of the Wavedeath. What he thought was going to be a "harmless" plunder run instead turned out to be a full on **** and pillage of a coastal village. Quint quickly realized that he didn't have the stomach for his adoptive families brutal brand of piracy. While his fellow pirates were tearing the village apart, Quint fled inland, ashamed of both what the pirates had done, and that he couldn't bring himself to participate. Quint has been wandering the countryside ever since, earning a meager living bringing rain and storms to desperate villages, and working as a mercenary for hire. His latest job as a Caravan guard has brought him to Waterdeep, where he hopes to rest, relax, and maybe work a little.
Experience with D&D - I've been playing 3.5e for about 15 years, and recently switched to 5e. I've DMed a few campaigns, so I have a pretty solid grasp of the rules, but I've only ever been a DM in 5e, never a player (until now hopefully!)

Name: Kain Duskhunter
Race|Class: Human | Fighter (intending Rune Knight)
Backstory: Kain was a wanderer. Well, he'd been travelling with a group of nomads for so long they had become like family. Some time ago they had been running low on supplies so Kain had offered to visit the markets in Waterdeep to restock.
He had ulterior motives though. A dwarf in his tribe had spoken of a long lost practice. Magic's brought to the world by the Giants. It was said that simple engravings etched into everyday items could imbue them with great power. The trip to Waterdeep had allowed Kain an opportunity to seek out any information he could from the myriad of libraries and sages within the city.
That had been three full moons ago and he had found very little about this mysterious art. His coin purse running dry he decides to seek out new forms of income. Perhaps through manual labour, but hopefully something more exciting comes along...

Saridek, Half Orc, Haunted One, Exterminator
Saridek the Half Orc: You know that old saw - look into the abyss long enough and sooner or later find yourself on the inside looking out. That's kind of what Saridek the Half Orc is all about...sort of. Except, as an exterminator in Waterdeep, he's been working in the abyss since he was knee high to a halfling. Not that Saridek has issues with his height, o no indeed! It's the rest of the City that is vertically challenged. Saridek is the perfect height, for a dwarf.
Stat generation: Ability scores: 10 8 9 7 14 16
Races and classes: Khione, silver dragonborn paladin, oath of devotion (rough character sheet: x)

Character Sheet: https://ddb.ac/characters/43464095/bXD0L8
Violet of secrets 5 gold
V.Human with Shadow Touched.
Red the Alchemist (Might change name to Fuse though (fu u ss not like fuse box)
V.Human with the Mobile Feat.
Folk Hero
Note: Did not spend money or equipement yet.
EDIT:
Looking at how others are rolling, most are doing 4d6 drop one (the auto) and the other half are doing the reroll 1s once. So I'll do that, can roll again if chosen and GM prefers. Ability scores: 12 15 10 9 16 15

Race: Drow
Class: Ranger
Background: Far Traveler
Backstory: With her entire village displaced from their home by a deep delving dragon when she was but a child, Lussa, as she is known to her friends, has harbored an intense resentment towards all dragonkind as a result.

Name: Lucas Gemstriker
Race: Variant Human
Class: Warlock (Hexblade)
Background: Folk Hero
Faction: n/a, independent
Abilities: Rolled (above)
Name: Thervan Wolfbluff
Stat generation: Point Buy
Races and classes: Half-elf, Rogue (intent to Mastermind)
Looking forward to it!

Cimer - Tiefling - Warlock (Fiend) - Charlatan
For now, he simply needs to prove he’s special. Volo offers that opportunity.

Name - Quint Thundertongue
