The next day Josias, Toren, and Baryk are fresh and ready for battle. This fight will be a three-for-all. (Heheh)
To win the match you must... 3... Survive. After 5 rounds a lethal opponent will come to speed things along. Defeat your opponents or let them be defeated.
The time: 1 Day. Late in the morning the sun is climbing high. The battlefield is well lit by the bright morning sun.
Three human men. All fit and athletic. All masters of their weapons. One clad in steel Plate wields a gigantic Sword. One shielded by mear Illusions is practiced with the Staff. The other wearing Studded armor with thin metal sheets wields a great Bow.
"A rising star on the battlefield, undefeated! Will that change today? Master of Archery! Baryk Grey Castle!"
"With his world turned upside-down he's found some stability here in the chaos of battle! Polearm Master! Toren 'Tickle-Whiskers'!"
"More often seen running his business these days than fighting for his coin. Heavy Weapon Master! Josias Great Lance!"
The Arena Shapers produce their latest work. A forest of tall trees laced with well worn intersecting paths, and fortified with a few wooden palisades. The smaller trees can offer half cover but won't bear your weight well. The larger trees have dense branches and will offer total cover if you climb more than 15 feet up. (If you attack from the tree you are below 15 feet. You won't be able to fire out from the cover of the branches, or retreat into the branches after attacking on your turn.)
Has anyone brought up the idea of a crit success/fumble table? I would both love and hate it personally. However, I do know that the crowd would love it. This would not really change much, it would just make whatever happens more interesting. When I rolled a one in the third round it felt lame, If I proceded to fall to the ground, or drop my sword It would have at least been super memorable and potentially the kind of thing that could have others laughing at me for rounds to come. As it was, It was rather uneventful.
OOC: I'd like to second this idea from a month and a half ago. I could do the tables, maybe, like this one for bows:
Bow Critical Fumble Table
2d6
2: Shot wild. Reroll attack against nearest ally to target.
3: Bowstring snaps. If bow was magical, it will recover all magical abilities when restrung.
4: Bowstring hits forearm. Take 1d4 bludgeoning or slashing damage, whichever is more effective.
5: Bowstring hits fingers. Drop bow and take 1 bludgeoning damage.
OOC: Something seems odd to me about a proficient, above-average archer having a 5% chance to disarm/hurt themselves every time they attack, though. Statistically speaking, we're saying that every 20 shots he/she takes, an archer will really mess themselves up. Just a thought.

OOC: That's why I have my other house rule for natural 1s.
If you roll a natural 1 (on an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, but we can pretend it only applies to attack rolls), you automatically fail. If you would have failed anyway, you critically fail.
Basically, that means that you won't always critically fail on a 1, and that your chances of critically failing decrease with increasing skill and increase with increasing difficulty. For example, Baryk currently has +10 to hit, so when he rolls a 1, he only critically fumbles an attack against a target with AC 12 or higher. When he levels up and maxes his Dex, he'll stop critically failing against AC 12.

you some times you feel like hitting a human with another human
Calgin moves out of the starting area and ready's his sword.
(Move out to 10C if I can reach it without dashing, 11E otherwise. Behind the wall either way. If I'm hit by any opportunity attacks I'll probably use my potion to heal if it does enough damage. Otherwise use my action to ready a melee attack if anyone from the other team comes in range.
