(It appears that you are using mobile to make these maps? If so that would explain why it seems a little easier to understand on mobile but I cannot say that I have really had any problems understanding the maps other than what is higher ground or lower ground when dealing with the cliffs that you use)

(I am noticing the difference between what he wants and what is being displayed. The actual display is elongating the maps and making it more narrow to match the format of a phone screen. What he is attempting is allowing it to remain more square so as to allow easier judgment of distance so that it doesn't seem like one is moving a further distance to go from say A-1 to A-2 [which appears to be a longer spacing distance] than it is to go from A-1 to B-1)

I keep the maps in plain text in the campaign private notes. I can store tables, and I do store character figures and reminders to myself there, like your current health. I don't need fancy tools, but if I used paper, you'd all have ended up ripped, and spilled on, and in the trash can long ago.)
(Side note about campaign notes for you mobile users: if I post in color or post an image or use any tools that aren't straight out of the mobile editor, I probably wrote it as a campaign note then copied and pasted it into the forum editor. The campaign notes have all the tools of the desktop editor without having to switch to the desktop version of the site.)
